The serious business of counting down the days until we leave has now begun in earnest, with this time next week being d-day for flying out of the UK to start our trip in Bangkok. Our final weeks at work have been relatively relaxed affairs, speak for yourself Matt, I've had loads to do and your weeks at work are always relaxed affairs unlike mine, and promise to continue in this vain for the remaining two days of 9-5 life, before spending our final few pre-trip days in Leicester and Birmingham saying goodbye to assorted relatives and enduring many hours worrying about what the hell we’re doing. People’s current question when they meet us is “are you getting excited yet?” … and I would dearly love to give a resoundingly positive answer, but the truth of ... read more

The nerves and excitement are starting to kick in. The only things I can think about are sex and travel....in that order. Ner seriously I am sorting out all the boring mundane stuff like travel insurance and making sure I dont forget anything crucial. Having a big purge of worldly possessions too, quite liberating really....after all it is just stuff. I'll be coming back to no job, no fixed abode, and probably very little money.....so the dole, mum's spare room, and free entertainment are gonna be the name of the game. I'm hoping it will all be worth it. Sure it will!... read more

Following the format of one of the many travel blogs I’ve been reading at work whilst daydreaming of life in exotic countries, anything written in bold will be Cate’s ... read more

Today was shopping day. We went to Melton Mowbray for Market Day (the kids spent a lot of time with a clown learning to do the Diabolo sticks, stilts, hoola contests, and this bizarre pedal sneaker thing). Then on to Highcross in Leicestershire. It has a giant outdoor pedestrian-only shopping streets area plus a fancy indoor mall. The shopping was fantastic. The driving in the "big city" was a little more difficult but we made it in and back out somehow. Went to the Windmill Inn for dinner in the nearby village of Redmile. Nice dinner and Lori enjoyed Sticky Toffee Pudding for dessert (pudding). Nigel enjoyed a few different bitter ales. And Lori drove to the Inn and back - her first driving experience! Pretty good! Nigel had a tougher time adjusting to sitting in ... read more

Well, we made it! The travel itself was actually uneventful (a good thing). Flight was shorter than planned by almost an hour so we made it to Birmingham with plenty of time to clear customs, get baggage and meet the Foxalls and get their car. Very nice family and they were excited to begin their journey. Nigel was really tense about the driving for the first 5 minutes and I navigated (that was actually much harder than driving it turned out). But we managed to follow the directions perfectly (traffic circles and all!) and made it to Wharflands (our new abode) in just over an hour. The day was just a rest day really (the kids did sleep on the flight but really, is a xouple hours any better than no sleep?) So, we arrived, did ... read more

This entry might be kind of boring. I am mostly talking about some things I have done around the town I am living in and some things I have done with friends. But since I cannot travel out of the country every weekend and I want to see some of England here are some of the things that occupy my time here. Sorry there are no country hopping adventures or anything scandalous in this entry, keep your fingers crossed for the next entry. Some of the other random things I have done around Leicester are visit a nearby town, go out with friends, and go shopping with the girls. Valentine’s Day weekend, while staying in Leicester I took the bus to uncharted territory with a couple of girls on my study abroad program. We took the ... read more

While in Leicester I had the opportunity to see many new sporting events. I am happy to say that I saw my first ever rugby and football (aka soccer) matches. The first event I went to was the Leicester Tigers Rugby match with Sharron. She was looking around for someone to go with her and I said was interested in maybe going to a game and she pounced at the opportunity and said, “Ok we’re going! When are you free?” So one weekend that I spent in Leicester was half divided by writing papers and on Saturday going to see the Leicester Tigers. The match was pretty interesting and surprisingly tame. We went not knowing what to really expect, but we heard from some of the other fans that the rugby matches are the more relaxed ... read more

Hello Everyone! I just want to start off by saying how much I miss you all. Don't get me wrong, I am having a great time, but there are still some times that I just wish I could be home too. :-) Anyhow, I spent all that time telling you about my trip to London and I never even got to mention how my stay in Leicester has been thus far. So, that is what I am going to talk about now. I arrived in Leicester a little over a week ago and I have just been settling in. We got an extra week before classes start so I haven't had anything to do except orientation stuff. I would like to say one thing though, although this seems like a great school they are very, VERY ... read more
