Hiyas everyone! I'm afraid this blog is a little late in coming; however, there have been some seriously beautiful days in a row here and I had to take advantage of them. Believe me, if you ever find yourself in England, you'll know what I mean. The folks here are completely obsessed with all things weather, and I've found myself becoming equally obssesed! So, here I am in beautiful middle England. Leicester (pronounced Lester) is very much a college and business town, much like Gainsville, Florida. About an hour or so north of London and a train ride away from just about anything! The flat I'm living in at the moment is on Evington Road in a part of Leicester called Highfields and is mainly populated by Bangladesh and Pakinstani Muslims. It is quite common to ... read more

Sometimes, one of the best things about living in a busy city, is getting out of it. And today was definitely that day! After spending the morning getting some shopping done, I met up with a bloke called Graham. He is a native Englander and has lived in Leicester, the city I am staying in, for most of his life. He also has a shiny Triumph ST, which is a rather sporty motorbike made here in England. He offered to take me out of the city to a place called Foxton Lock (another part of the canal system here in England) to The Foxton Locks Inn/Restaurant, about twenty minutes outside of Leicester. I happily accepted the invite and he was good enough to loan me a jacket and helmet for the trip. So, having never been ... read more

Matt: When Ed and I were planning our European adventure, there were a number of events that we knew we would have to see. From the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona to Oktoberfest and the Cannes Film Festival, this continent really has heaps to offer the culture buff. And so it was that last weekend, Ed I decided to visit that other cultural beacon of Europe: the Leicester Comedy Festival…! For some reason, Leicester has a bit of a bad reputation in the UK. It’s known for… well, in truth, it’s not really known at all. Despite being the home of the Weetabix factory and the British National Space Museum (which apparently celebrates the rich history of Britain in space - all four and a half hours of it), when tourists make their lists of ... read more

This is being done in retrospect as we did not have the cob-on to do things like this before we left!! We left from East Midlands airport going to Prague. This flight was the only thing we had booked before leaving. Other preparation we had done inc all relevant jabs, saving up money, buying the lonely planets (though not really reading them!), Belarus, Russia, Mongolia and Chinese visas (which were a pain in the arse), photocopying everything, buying a bag, sandals, medi kit, raincoat, sewing kit (?) and that was about it!! To say we were both nervous in the weeks running up to it would be an understatement, we'd given up our flat and jobs and we were kind of thinking that a hop-on-and-off plane ticket might have been nice, as the only place we ... read more

Our final day at work will be Friday 15th July. We depart London Heathrow for Boston Logan on Monday 18th July. As you can imagine, we are beside ourselves with excitement! Despite the odd setback, it finally feels like we are about (quite literaly, in fact!) to get off the ground. The house has been sold and all of our belongings are in Rachel's parent's loft, our flight tickets are booked, we've had our jabs (ouch!) and we're raring to go! For those of you in the dark, our rough travel plans are as follows: Mid July to mid September: USA & Mexico Oct, Nov & Dec: South America Xmas & New Year: South Pacific Islands January: New Zealand February & March: Australia April, May & June: Asia July 2006: UK - boo!
