Woolly says – with the suitcase finally packed and more importantly closed we did seem to have quite a pile of my most important possessions still on the floor. I tried to explain to Jo that everything was necessary for my wellbeing but she could only frown at me and ask why I might need my jeep, pool table and JCB, I mean really, doesn’t she know me at all! As she refused to remove her clothing and pack the rest of my belongings I said a sad farewell to the items and we set off for the start of our journey. With a disgruntled mammoth in tow we made our way to the Royal to exchange goodbyes and take cares before waiting at the stop for our transfer. Woolly says – it was LATE! I ... read more

Hertfordshire Ok this one isn't really a trip, as this is the area I currently live in, at first I thought I'd write a blog about London as I'm from there and often go there (only about 20min.s away from where I live), but after doing a quick search I noticed that almost no one had writen anything about my area, which is a shame as there's plently of hidden gems dotted around. I'll list of some of the towns in this area I like to visit and what's a good thing to see or do there :) Hatfield - it's main attraction would be Hatfield House. A massive, impressive mansion that Henry VIII's children lived in their youths. A beautiful place, with an armoury and chapel surrounded by huge fancy gardens, farms, woodland walks etc. ... read more

The pilot spoke over the intercom and said that we are on our decent in to Perth and would be touching down and on the stand by 10.40, I am generally not a clock watcher, but after being away for nearly four weeks I couldn’t wait to see my girl again. As advised, the 330 Airbus touched down and soon I was in the baggage hall waiting for my bag to appear on the carousel. I had been excited about using my new Australian Passport, this would be its maiden voyage, as a bona fide Australian, I thought that I would hand my passport over to an Immigration Customs officer, who, if I would be lucky enough, would stamp the official document, but sadly not ! As I get into the customs area the signage directs ... read more

Well its January 2014 so it must be travel time again!! So I'm off to Cuba in mid Jan doing a small group tour right round the island using local home stays to get a real feel for what I hope will be a spectacular journey. Al will join me in Havana at the end and we have 4 days exploring the capital with a spot of salsa I hope!! We then head off to Mexico to the Yacatan peninsula to follow the Myan trail. So until then my friends........ read more

Finally we left Serbia behind with everyone present and no handcuffs used. What was supposed to be a short run to find a hotel just over the Hungarian border actually meant us driving a further 80 KM before checking in, feeding the mammoth and writing the blog. Exhausted beyond words we collapsed for the night. Woolly says – breakfast was a quick affair but the berry filled croissants were so nice I stored several in Jo’s bag for later consumption, I’m sure she won’t notice the crumbs! With fog hanging very low in the sky we set Aussie James up with his instructions and Ollie roared into life and took off down the Hungarian roads. It was impossible to see much and even though Jo tried taking pictures there was no point, I did insist on ... read more

Leaving do. Tick. Leaving cake. Tick. More leaving cake. Tick. Last night shift. Tick. My collection of lovely gifts include 3 frisbees, multiple books, many packs of travels wipes (I'm not that messy am I?), nail varnish (?!?), tissues, a phrase book, a travel pillow and insect repellent. Thanks everyone. All very thoughtful. Not sure I have space for everything. It is clearly more important for me to assess the aerodynamic properties of my frisbees before deciding which one is coming with me than packing so it will be a late night! The OAPs (aka Mum and Dad) are joining me for the first 3 weeks of my trip. Means I get to use most of their baggage allowance which is a bonus! I have 8 days before I am due to start work in Gondar ... read more

Having just endured a short stay in hospital, I thought I’d share my notes on things that occurred to me. Okay, I know this is TravelBlog and that the UK's National Health Service has nothing to do with journeys around foreign lands - but I did have to travel to the hospital and, as you’ll discover, it could almost have been China, India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Poland or Romania in England’s green and pleasant land! So, for what it’s worth, here are few of my observations during this enforced time away from home: Buildings are there for a purpose, be it hotel or hospital. Hospitals aren’t hotels, but my recent experience says the service in hospitals is actually sometimes better. It’s the people who make the difference. The many grades of nurses have different, confusing uniforms. ... read more

My first ever blog! Just an exercise to get familiar with TravelBlog site so that when I am on the road (12 days to go!) and melting from the heat (very difficult to remember what that feels like!) I will be able to navigate around the site and post with ease. I've even gone to the trouble of uploading a picture to see how my posts will look when published - hopefully I'll see more of these wonderful creatures in their natural habitat when I'm in Cambodia.... read more
