This is a trial run. Two days to go before the off and we are piling up clothes that we are intending to take with us on our adventure of a lifetime! We have done a lot of travelling but packing has always been an issue. I take up most of the space in the suitcases with clothes and poor Don is left with a miniscule corner. But a girl needs that extra pair of shoes or that big bag of make up oh and on the cruise part of the trip I will need a nice frock! The big debate will come tomorrow night when that big pile is placed into the suitcase. Will it all make Australia - watch this space!... read more

Day 1379 It was weird being on the M25 again, my first time in four years, everything seemed to be whizzing past so fast, far faster than we drive in Australia, but maybe it was just the jet lag. We had collected the hire car from Hertz, a little Kia Ceed, we were offered an upgrade to an Audi A4 for another twenty five pounds a day, but we were not interested, originally they wanted one hundred and twenty five pounds, but it must have been the initial look on my face that put him off trying to drive, (in his eyes) that bargain. It was the most beautiful morning and we were heading clockwise around the M25, towards Junction 24 (Potters Bar and Welwyn Garden City) we both felt completely wrecked from the last flight ... read more

Unfortunately Dad was still feeling bad up until he left, but well enough to get on a plane I hope. I am now staying with my Aunt Hilary and her husband Ivor in a two foot wide cot in what was their dining room and has become my room. While the conditions are not ideal, they will certainly do and they have been nice enough to welcome me into their small Watford flat. But I’m getting ahead of myself. Before all this I spent three days in a hotel with Dad and Luki called the Jurys Inn. I booked this place after some research and found it to be reasonable (250 pounds for three nights and three people). When we got there after the drive down from Tetford being led by our navigator Penelope to the ... read more

If there's one thing which would convince visitors to our fair shores that the English are barmy it would have to be: grown men and women wearing quaint costumes, bells on their legs and weird hats planted with flowers and feathers, dancing in a pub car park to the sounds of squeezeboxes and diddly-di-do songs while waving handkerchiefs in the air and menacingly clacking together wooden sticks. These strange affairs are called 'Morris dancing'. They're ancient folk dances, once thought to be pagan rituals, with carefully-choreographed steps, accompanied by music played on one or more melodeons or accordions and sometimes with a rhythmic, booming drum and a wind-instrument or two for good measure. Personally, I suspect it's all an excuse for a good booze-up; after all, you'll seldom see these dances performed anywhere except in pub ... read more

The Olympic Games were last held here in the UK in July 1948, having been postponed since 1944 because of certain unpleasantness at the time. The main venue - for the Games, not the unpleasantness - was Wembley Stadium, within sight of which I'd been born only four years earlier. I don't remember the Games - but then neither do Germany and Japan, who weren't invited to participate; they'd had a hand in that same unpleasantness. Now the Games are coming to London again, starting later this month. To compensate us for not being able to buy tickets for any events worth seeing, a Torch Relay carrying a bit of the Grecian flame has been doing the rounds of towns all over the country. Today, it was the turn of url=http://en.wik... read more

our first trip to foreign lands in almost 4.5 years of marriage, the cards were stacked in our direction because we just managed to make all arrangements as smoothly as possible, the tickets, visa and arranging accommodation with my aunt at harpenden, hertfordshire. we left for colombo on 31st may, 2012 and this would be the first time i would catch an international flight from bengaluru airport, not for my husband because he had travelled to thailand before. it was a short flight to colombo and we waited to be escorted to our hotel in negumbe outside colombo..the people instantly struck me as friendly, warm and approachable. we promised ourselves we would fly sri lankan more often, applied for the frequent flier programme and made a note to visit sri lanka again. once at the hotel ... read more

Dear all, Please forgive late start-up with our new blog but the internet has been down in a large part of the neighbourhood where we are staying, however here we are finally, back online tonight! So starting from the beginning....... Monday 30th April Departure Day......at last!!! Russell managed to get packed just in time for a 12.00 noon departure...there's always something else to do. Lately it's been to make sure everything was right so that, from his phone or the computer, he could watch the burglers running through the house from overseas!! We decided it was definitely worth a few dollars to have a special check in counter and then a special boarding lane to take us upstairs to our Premium Economy section of the plane.....then some nice personal attention throughout the flight. Just keep working ... read more
