The weather forecast says that it will start raining at 4 o'clock this afternoon and then continue for the rest of the day. We've still got a few hours to run on our 24 hour hop on hop off bus ticket, so we decide to make the most of this while it's still dry. We've already seen a lot of the bus route, so we catch the Underground to Hyde Park Corner and board the bus there. Some of the exits from tube stations seem to be almost as long as the distances between the stations, and if you come out the wrong one you can end up a long way away from where you want to be. Hyde Park Corner Station has six different exits, so as Murphy's Law would have it we end up ... read more

I start the day with a session on my knees washing a handful of shirts in the bath. I think I've just saved us about $200. It's still a bit grey but it's not raining, well not yet at least. We walk across Tower Bridge towards the Tower of London and join a tour with a Yeoman Warder named George. He has a booming loud voice but his accent still makes him hard to understand. He tells us that there's been a fortress of some sort in place here since Roman times, and it's been gradually expanded over the centuries. When they decided they needed a moat an expert was imported from Holland to help them out. It seems his expertise may have been slightly lacking; he managed to dig the moat too deep. There were ... read more

The hotel receptionist asks us where we're going, and we respond that we're travelling to London on the train. He says that St Pancras station where it terminates is very nice, but then quickly adds that most Parisians think that Gare du Nord, where we'll be getting on, is very dangerous. I don't ask him for any more details. I'm not sure I want to know. I hope he means that it's full of pickpockets and other sleazy characters, because about the only alternative I can come up with is that there's something wrong with the trains. I think we've probably got some hope of protecting ourselves against undesirables, but I'm not sure there'd be too much we could do if we went round a corner a bit too quickly and our carriage went flying. Checking ... read more

Wednesday 24 June 2015 This is the day we make our much anticipated quick trip to London to attend a concert at The Wigmore Hall, where our daughter Joanne Is to sing. As proud parents we are delighted to have this rare opportunity to hear our opera singer perform at this highly regarded concert venue. Our day started early with a short drive to Menningen Airport where the budget airlines make dreams come true. So early did we arrive that we managed breakfast and were still first in the line at the counter to show our NZ passports and get the seal of approval to proceed through security. One of our party received the full body pat down after many beeps and worried looks from the staff. Perhaps the odd metal screw in one foot caused ... read more

Started the day with a sleep in as all a bit tired. Michelle and I spent the morning exploring the shops as we weren't meeting Steph till 1pm. We had been into Tesco, Sainsbury, Marks&Spence and Morrisons, but today we found Whole Foods and is the best food retailer we have ever seen. Met with Steph and headed in to explore St Paul's Cathedral, another must do in London. You do a self guided tour with headphones on, so as to get the full history. After exploring the cathedral floor we started the long climb to the top. Michelle went halfway due to the warnings of tight spaces and slow moving people in the last two levels. Steph and I ventured up and got stuck for about 5 minutes waiting for the crowd, it was hot ... read more

Steph came round and off to the usual cafe for a healthy breakfast. Heading back into London today, we caught the bus so Michelle could ride the double decker. Embarked at Trafalgar Square for a few more pics. London was noticeably busier today as it is Friday and the weather is ok. Walked past the national museum to see the theme is about British cavalry so the horses were on display. Also here was our first look at how security has been tightened up as there were police in full kit and armed with automatic weapons. Continued along past 10 Downing St, also heavily guarded. Walking over the bridge to the London Eye, the scammers were out today, with different distractions to pick your pocket. Michelle was quick to move me along. Lol Rode the eye ... read more

It's Stephs 23rd birthday yeah! Today is all about Steph, so it's her pick for everything we do and everywhere we go. She had booked for us a canal tour from a place called little Venice down to Camden markets. Michelle wanted to take the bus to experience a double decker, as with the trains they come every 7-8 minutes. Waiting at our stop for number 70 would see about 30 buses (double deckers) come and go. Then number 70 bus turns up and it's a single decker just like the buses at home. It was so funny, but I guess you had to be there. Found our canal boat and we were off for a relaxing and informative ride down to Camden markets. The canals in London have played a big part in London history, ... read more

I have been to London twice before. Once as a young girl with my mum during the traditional Autumn Holiday, and once after a crazy New Years Eve in Portugal celebrating the arrival of 2006. I don't remember much apart from China Town from my first visit and my disappointment of Portobello Road from my second. Thus, I must admit I was not exactly over enthusiastic when my boyfriend dreamt of us visiting London. However, last year for his birthday I gave him a plane ticket to London, and finally we found the time to fit in a long weekend trip. But seeing as it is a long time since any of us visited London, we wanted to make the most of it. Most of all I have been looking forward to the pubs. Ever since ... read more

Another big day as we decided to leave our affluent leafy suburb that we have become accustomed to and head into London for a self guided tour. Steph met us at 9 for a nice healthy breakfast. We had made plans to see the changing of the guards, so our day would revolve around that. After hiring bikes, we peddled our way to Buckingham palace. I probably got warned three times for riding on the footpath, but the other option was to join the busy traffic and die on the roads. Just told them I was from Australia which seems to work. Along the way we were lucky enough to see the police/queens horses in training. Changing of the guards was ok, but you wouldn't rush back. Seems a lot of trouble for someone knocking off ... read more
