We arrived in London's Heathrow around 7.30am, Thursday 13 July. Hundred of other travellers also arrived around the same time which meant it took ages to get through customs. Leaving Sydney wasn't without its problems either as we sat in the plane for over one and a half hours after our scheduled take off time. Due to Sydney's strong winds only one runway was operational for both take off and landing although once in the air it wasn't as bumpy as we'd been led to believe it would be...thankfully! Amongst the movies I watched on the plane was The Graduate starring a very young Dustin Hoffman and Ann Bancroft. It's years since I saw it originally but it was certainly well worth a re-run. Catherine and David Barker - a couple of other Dickensians ... read more

I'm trying to plan my trip to London but there is a lot I need to figure before I travel. This city seems to be a lot bigger than I first thought and assuming that I should aim for a hotel within walking distance to tourist attractions and other fun places is just wrong. Because no matter what I go for I will be forced to you use the underground metro anyway. I plan to stay in London for two weeks and I plan to cover all the typical places where tourists visits. It shouldn't be too hard to do with all that time but I also like walking and seeing stuff as they are instead of just jumping into transportation and go to the destination. This is also one of the reasons why I prefer ... read more

June 2016 and again Feb 2017 were two visits to the United Kingdom. It was a long flying time of around 11 hours. First time we had taken such a long journey and getting tired of sitting ! Though we were watching movies, snacking in between the boredom of long journey does irritate at times. We landed at the Heathrow airport in the afternoon of 20 th June. It was indeed quite pleasant and cold. For us from India with a temperature of 37 Deg it was pretty cold at 16 deg. We checked into the YMCA hostel at Fitzroy square. A decent place in the central area close to Warren road tube station, supermarkets and other facilities. The first day was just spent in the room and a evening walk around the area. The next day ... read more

London, Around the City Our Last Day...oh no! May 25, 2016 We are loving our few days around and about London! We are staying near the Ritz Hotel at the Holiday Inn in the Mayfair district of London….very upscale and posh. The neighborhood is bustling and full of life…lots of traffic, pedestrians, shops and places to snack and eat! We have found a grocery store around the corner and three coffee places within a block. We spend our time wandering the city of London. Dave and his excellent map reading skills really make this part of our visit easy. And, we walk miles and miles. Our first stop today is just a few blocks away, The Faraday Museum. Dave has been wanting to go here as Michael Faraday was one of the people who got him ... read more

On paper, London is the who's who of global cities. It's the world's most visited destination and has the busiest airport on Earth (Heathrow), making JFK look as empty as a Jags game. It has the most billionaires in the world (72), so plentiful that Sir Richard Branson is just another number. It's considered the world's leading financial center and top investment spot, even Forbes Magazine brushed aside New York City and Wall Street to call London the most influential city on the planet. The town's conglomerate of 43 universities was ranked #1 internationally for higher education, making Cambridge, Massachusetts feel like junior high. And if that weren't enough, it's the only city to host the Olympics 3 times, an ode to its incredible infrastructure that comprises of top-class museums, a theater scene second only to ... read more

Issy has been very tired and is suffering from lack of sleep. She tells me that my itinerary is wearing her out. I very generously decide that I will give her the morning off to let her to sleep in, and I go out on my own. The sun is shining some of the time and there are some patches of blue sky, but it's still very cool. I walk to Tower Bridge and go into the Tower Bridge Exhibition. A lift takes me up to the top of one of the bridge's two main towers where there are walkways across to the other main tower on both sides of the bridge. Both walkways have quite long sections of clear glass floor across the full width of the walkway which allow you to see very clearly ... read more
