Tue 24 May 2005 My senses are dead from am all nighter for last minute preparations but the bodily feelings of excitement are palapable as I grab some comission free sterling travellers cheques from Barclays and sprint towards to the tube. I have said said my goodbyes to Tome, Nick and Nigel and am ready to leave London to embark on a first time trip to South East Asia. Don't you just love trave? I mean not travel in the sense of A to B but travel that involves a change of state; a chance to "seek out new life and new civilizations" to boldly go where every other lonely planet reader, businessman, aid worker, paedophile has gone before? I'm still in Heathrow and try to see the BAHT exchange rate at the Travelex shop. I ... read more

Hello all once again. I have been going around for the past couple of days to a bunch of different concerts, however one sorta stuck out as slightly odd. We went to the Royal Festival Hall for performances of Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet, a classical guitar concerto and a concerto piece featuring a dijeridu. When I heard that, I didn't know what to think. I kinda had the following thought process: Hey, there's a dijeridu perforamce. Awsome! Wait, this is a classical orchestra. What are they going to do with a diferidu. I mean, I'm sure the guy can play but will it just be 'brreeeaaann' for twenty minutes? Oh well, I think this will be great I wan't wrong about that. It was an awsom show. The guy had all the tricks down. The other ... read more

Mick and Sal left Ireland via Dublin on the 13th of May, 2005, with heavy hearts and even heavier heads (the night before flying out, there was a heavy night on the "Blonde in the Black Dress" - aka Guiness - with a couple of lads from country Ireland). On arrival in London, the sheer expense of this city became apparent almost immediately upon arrival - the cost of the train trip from Gatwick airport to London Victoria train station (a journey of about 20 minutes) was considerably greater than the cost of flying from Dublin to the UK! Mick and Sal's first stop in London was in Fulham, the pleasant abode of Dom (friend from Australia), Richard and Gerome (Aussie ex-pat). Not enough thanks can be lavished upon these three, who showed us tremendously generous ... read more

I am stopping with chums in London at the moment - in Leyton - 30 seconds from Leyton Orient's ground. Yesturday i went to camden to try and buy a few things but didnt. all i got were some noodles for £1 for the back of the market which is damn good value if you ask me. they do them every day from 5.30 for a quid. after that i went to the cock pub on great portland street (just off oxford circus) and met up with a few people and somehow ended up starting a band called 'next week in northampton' and having a bet that we couldnt get into nme by this time next year. we arent actually gonna make any music - just gonna try through hype alone. i guess that wont happen. ... read more

After a night in Nottingham, Kat and I jumped back into the right-handed go-kart of death known as our rental car and trekked it back down the M1 to London. My mission, which I chose to accept, was to pilot the tiny 4-banger straight into the automotive beehive that is London center, navigating to the well-hidden underground return point of National Car Rental. I'm happy to report the mission was a flying success. Note the triumphant picture of me with the completely intact rental car. YES! I rule! Next, we paid off one of the luggage handlers at a nearby hotel to stash our luggage and headed out to explore the rainy city of London. As I'm terribly behind in my journals and would much rather be watching Family Guy episodes I've ripped off the net, ... read more

Hello all, I have some good travel advice for all when in London. Several people from the course and I have determined that food is very expensive in London. I mean, to get a supper somewhere can be upwards of 7 pounds. I mean, I don't even want to think of the conversion rate to Canadian currency. However we have found a very good solution using several facts. It has been determined that beer is less expensive than pop and juice. Also that going to a supermarket named Tosco for a premade sandwitch is very cheap. To this effect, a cheap meal consisting of a ham and swiss sandwich, a maple pecan pastry and a 750 ml bottle of beer can be obtained for under 3£. It's nice to be in a country where their priorities ... read more

Hello all I am doing well so far at my class. On Wensday we went to see a performance of Handle's Samson. I was an amazing performance with only one hiccup. The person playing Delila was locked into a closet and the performance had to be delayed until she was found. I couldn't imagine how terrible that must of felt. My main comment on this was that it was excellent but very long, lasting just over 4 hours. The next day we went on an open top bus tour, which was an excellent way to see where stuff was in the city, but didn't provide much in the way of picture taking. Yesterday was a tour of Westmister Abby, which was a huge place. Personally I think the highlight was on the battle of Britian memorial ... read more

Heath and i were fortunate enough to find accommodation with family of friends back at home. So for 3 weeks I stayed at Tony and Pat's in Southfields, which backed onto Wimbledon Common. It was nice to stay in a family home for the first couple of weeks on arrival. Everyday for the first 2 weeks, we were out and about exploring different parts of London. Large City!!!! And at night we would come back to Soutfields and share some olives, camberbert and dips!!! Mmmm, for 2 aussies on very little money we were enjoying ourselves!!! Work was fast approaching and my stress levels about finding somewhere to live were also increasing!! Anyway after much mucking about, Heath and I found our place in Earls Court. We loved it the minute we saw it, and were ... read more
