I'm starting to feel more comfortable in London now. It's amazing how adaptable humans are - after 2 days of orientation John and I are navigating around like locals. We no longer have stunned looks on our faces when someone mentions a street or locale. I can't say that I immediately fell in love with London like I did NYC but it's definitely growing on me and I am starting to appreciate the old girl. Met John's cousin Paul last night and he's super cool. Elizabeth is at the operat tonight so we're having dins with Paul and his boys - they're visiting from Finland for a few days. 1pm: Currently, we're drinking Sleemans! Yes, Sleemans Honey Ale straight from Canada. How you ask? B/c we stumbled upon "The Maple Leaf", a pub that celebrates Britain's ... read more

So, it is my last day in London...for now. I'm sure I'll find a way to come back again. Michael and I saw a fair bit today for only having one full day in the city. We started with watching the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace - very cool - we couldn't actually go into the Palace because it is closed until July 30 :-( After the changing of the guard, we went to the Royal Mews (no, not a place for cats - it's her Majesty's stables). This, too, was interesting. A good place to go if you want something that doesn't take hours to visit, but still has a lot of history. Then it was off to the Tower of London, which is actually a series of castles upon more castles than ... read more

Greetings: So, Michael and I have left the land of haggis and men in kilts for the land of tea and crumpets (and recently, bombs!!). Things seem relatively normal here, given the chaos a few days ago. However, the one big pain (minor compared to the suffering of people, trust me, I know) is that some of the underground lines are not operating, which makes getting around hectic and puts many more cars on the road. We didn't get to the hotel (yes, hotel, NOT hostel) until about 3:30. We then wandered to the British Museum (great place - cousins Brent and Julie would love it), and then on to Trafalgar Square. We then wandered some more, got some food, and are now relaxing in the hotel. Tomorrow we are thinking about going to Buckingham Palace ... read more

So far we're just getting acquainted with the idiosyncracies of being oversees. I almost blew up my hair dryer this morning trying to sort out the voltage adapters (nothing like have smoke blow out of the motor to wake you up)! Then we had our first introduction of paying to go to the bathroom when we arrived at Waterloo Station to start our day of touring the sights. Rode the double decker bus and saw all the notable landmarks en route. Big Ben is our fave! This is not just any clock - it's gorgeous. There is so much history here its amazing! Buckingham Palace, Tower Bridge, Westminster Cathedral, Picadilly Circus, Scotland Yard just to name a few. BUT the highlight so far was at The Olde Kings Head pub where I had bangers and mash ... read more

Having been an international traveller since the year dot, I started to put together a travel diary as of the summer of 2005, just after I had purchased my first ever digital camera. It all seemed so fitting, and timely then, that the first entry to this travel diary was London, my home nation's capital city, where I had arranged to meet a friend and show her around two major European capital cities. The travel diary continues to this very day, and I am keeping it separate in content and style from this blog, which I intend be less formal in style, and more of a reflection of my emotions at the time of visiting each place en route. Most of the travel diary entries represent first and only visits to the place in question, therefore, ... read more

Greatest. Concert. Ever. I don't think it is possible to see anything of such magnitude ever again. Even though they said something like that in 1985, Live 8 was easily the greatest live event ever, and it will probably never be able to matched up to again. It's really hard to write about how awesome it was to experience it. I wasn't in Hyde Park itself, since it was impossible to get tickets, but after trying really hard to see through the trees to get a glimpse of the big screens (imagine that, trees in a park), or trying to peak around or over fences, or just hear the music over the busy streets sorrounding the park, we then headed over to Regent's Park nearby, where they had set up a big screen to watch the ... read more

When we arrived in London we were astounded by the sheer volume of exciting and fabulous things there were to do in this vibrant city. At home in Adelaide it seems you can go months without anything too interesting coming along, but in London the problem seems to be there are so many things to do that they are often all on at the same time. We were very excited by our tickets to U2 and we could hardly believe when the Live8 concert was announced, with a lineup that included the likes of U2, Madonna, Cold Play, The Who, Robbie Williams, Pink Floyd, Paul McCarteny, Sting, The Killers and Annie Lennox ... and the tickets were being given away, for free! The only drawback was you had to enter a draw to get them, which ... read more

As I drove away from the rockies for the last time I realized how much I loved and was going to miss living there... the nearly 5months had gone by way too fast and I can definately see myself going back there sooner or later. Since I got back from CR I spent my last week chilling out with Kim in Calgary, and also got a couple of days in the Bow Valley to party up with what was left of the crew, and do some white-water rafting which was awesome! Then after a sad old goodbye with Kim at the airport,(miss you Kimmy) I turned up at Paul Harts flat in London and since then have had a huge week involving catching up with too many people to name which has been fantastic, seeing the ... read more

Today was really our first day out and about. We arrived in London on Friday. We spent Saturday strolling along the area near our hotel. Our jaunt from Kentucky across the Atlantic was more arduous than we'd anticipated. So, we weren't very ambitious on our first day here. Today we took "The Big Bus Tour". It's a nice ride in the open air with a digital or live guide. We chose to stay with the live guide. It was a beautiful day of fresh air, site seeing and history. Alan was our tour guide and he was excellent. He delivered lots of facts and plenty of humor. The Big Bus Tour is one of the easiest ways to explore. If you want a more close-up and detailed view of any site, just hop off, walk about ... read more

Dan here. Friday was an eventful day for London and for us, bookended by events that together marked it as a day of transition: a set of major morning transport snarls both caused and exacerbated by the heat, and, as the sun retreated for the evening, a cool, thundery rainstorm. Weather I don't know if we've harped on this point much, but it has been HOT in London this past week. Highs have been in the low but humid 90's in a city not really equipped for it: air-conditioning is rare and the "cold" drinks are generally lukewarm from overworked refrigerators. It has been a week of long, still sweats and small, fleeting pleasures. The pleasures have mostly involved the chance moments when the Tube conjures a strong wind: the push of an approaching train as ... read more
