We’ve been in the UK for 5 days now and so it’s time to start the blog before I forget the places we’ve visited. We started our holiday by driving from Heathrow to Seaford immediately after disembarking from our 24-hour travel from Brisbane - thankfully our flight had been uneventful and we’d managed to sleep on the plane. Our trip to Seaford was surprisingly stress-free until 10 minutes from our destination, at which point the battery in Terry’s iPad decided to die, thus taking our GPS and map capabilities with it. Once again we are using AirBnB listings for our holiday accommodation and eventually we managed to find our accommodation for the next week – a B&B on the outskirts of Seaford. Our host is a retired printer/typographer whose daughter convinced him to take up AirBnB ... read more

We picked up our home on wheels from Reading, a Mercedes Sprinter conversion and set off to visit High Clere Castle, the residence used for the filming of Downton Abbey, one of our favourite TV series but unfortunately it was closed to the public which was a bit of a bummer as we were right at the gates and so close! Then as it always does in England it started to rain heavily with lightning filling the sky just as we headed towards Stonehenge, something that has been on my bucket list for a while. The distance on the road maps between towns takes next to no time to travel and before we knew it we were zooming past these impressive stones watching people staring at them with the rain bucketing down so I quickly agreed ... read more

Based on Bryson's description in his book, we looked forward to hiking the Seven Sisters. We headed toward the National Trust Birling Gap, to start our trek along the chalk cliffs called the Seven Sisters. We came across a Seven Sisters County Park in the South Downs NP. It was too early for the visitors center, but the park included rock pools, grasslands and the meaders...a constructed channel that was built in 1846 to divert the Cuckmere River. The walk is along the cliffs are a working farm, the Gayles Farm. Galyes has a rich history dating back to the Stone Age and serving as a airfield during WW2. Sheep and rabbits are everywhere. You see numerous locations indicating the receding of the cliffs at more than two feet a year. Belle Tout lighthouse was built ... read more

We got up early and took the first bus to a small village, Brighstone. We had been told it was a very pictuesque bus ride. The return bus schedule was such that we could grab breakfast and then walk the village. Breakfast ended up only what we could get at a small grocery store, as things don't up early here in England. The St. Mary's Church is medieval dating from the twelfth century. The short tower contains a ring of 6 bells all cast by Whitechapel Bell Foundry in 1961. The spire was added in the 17th century. On the drive to Brighton, we stopped in the town of Chichester, a quaint town with a historic cathedral with a remarkable history. Chichester Cathedral, formally known as the Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity, is the seat ... read more

Decing last minute on where to go, when you´ve got just one day off from work is not really that hard, mainly because of the fact that you have less choices. So I chose Brighton..., never been there and was quite excited to see the city. When you look it up on the internet the first thing you see is the Brighton Pier. Journey from Windsor-Claphan Junction-Brighton took 1,5h, which was not long at all. Once you arrive you get to walk a long street leading up to the sea and the famous Brighton Pier. Whenever I travel somewhere I tend not to expect anything from the country or place, just for the sake of not being upset later. When we came to the coast it was windy and cold, but apart from that the view ... read more

We had a flight from Naples to London Gatwick Saturday evening. We caught an after train from Paestum to Naples and then took the local bus to the airport. You can get tickets for the bus at the tobacco shops in the train station. They were like 3 euros a pop. The walk to the bus stop is super sketchy. I barely recommend it during daylight hours and wouldn't recommend it at all after dark. You exit out the front of the station and there's a plaza out front across the street, you will go to the side with the McDonald's and cross and walk straight until you reach the end where there's another plaza with a bunch of busses, it's also by a McDonald's. The airport bus is the furthest away from the curb. If ... read more

History lesson: Today is the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta. Cool to be here on such a momentous day. Today was another bucket list day, as Andrew and I visited Brighton, the setting for The Who's Quadrophenia album. Despite some delays on the part of the British rail service at the start, the trip took less than an hour, and we were at the Brighton station by 1130. It was cool -- around 60 -- and cloudy at first, but as Andrew and I walked down the hill through the center of town (stopping briefly at Hobgoblin Music store, where Andrew played several guitars), the skies slowly cleared. By the time we reached the beach, it was a beautiful sunny day. The channel water was a beautiful blue, the sky was filled ... read more

I've had a busy 2 days, and I still think the most awesome thing that's happened was watching Billy Elliot at the Victoria Palace in London with Eno! Where shall I begin? Let's start with the good from Monday. St. Albans is a quaint suburb of London, 30 minutes by train to the north. There are Roman ruins - my first of this trip, but certainly not my last - and they were worth the 2.5 pounds to visit. The Abbey was massive there - St. Albans is a cathedral town, so the abbey dominates both the history and the skyline of the area. They give a free tour a couple times a day, and it was so good - an old fellow showed me and a retired couple around the cathedral for an hour. It ... read more
