As you look out of the train windows, it looks to me like what I imagine the densely populated landscape of somewhere like Rio to look like- there are just masses of houses piled upon hills and upon each other. And because the landscape is not flat but undulates, the effect is that much more dramatic because the eye can take in more. Sometimes the early morning sun rises with the houses and it's really quite something to watch. You then enter Brighton station. This is one of my favourite train stations (stay with me, this is going somewhere, promise...) It is, for some reason, romantic. In my mind it is from a time long ago, when getting on a train meant a long absence, and you really meant 'goodbye.' I see steam and bags of ... read more

Well, it has been quite an interesting last 6 weeks for me, especially when one looks at the last two blogs entry. Before I get carried away, there are three things I feel need clarity. First, I am not a tourist; I am an international student, so the idea of using a travel blog was not a good one. Second, I was wrong if I was going to come to one of the most reputable institution such as Institution of Development Studies at the University of Sussex and only put 30 per cent of my time to get a Master degree, the opposite has happen so far, and it seems likely that this will the trend going forward. And lastly, the idea of sitting in a front of computer and write more than 1000 which is ... read more

Hi all, Last blog because I said I would write one more and so that I didn't end on 13 blogs but 14 instead! I have now been back just over a week, it's lovely to be back in the UK. I have done a lot of travelling i the last week, 7 flights! My last day in Gambia was a nice day but a bit disappointing as the weather wasn't so great. I had been hoping for sunshine so I could spend my last day on the beach but it was pretty grey. I went to Bakau one last time to pick up my bag from the tailor this time it was finished thankfully. I then spent most of the day packing before meeting everyone to go out for dinner. We went to a restaurant ... read more

23 days until I leave the UK. Scared, excited, lots of emotions - leaving my job to be unemployed and leaving my friends and family behind to see the world. WOW. Lots to sort out, people I want to see and spend time with before I leave, a list to stick to, visa's to buy, insurance to arrange and all in just 23 days. If you know me as well as I hope you do then you will know that I am always useless with organising myself and sticking to time frames! Going into the unknown all on my own - ive never been so scared but yet excited in my life - what a strange feeling this is.... read more

In the UK right, and then what? Well in planning my stay here in Brighton I thought to myself 50 per cent travelling UK and Europe in cheap airlines and train, 30 per cent meeting people from everywhere and ofcoz 20 per cent studying. I know it supposed to be the other way round but I have it that way because ' I CAN'. So what has happened after a week in Brighton? Well first thing first, the scope of work looks terrible at first I thought they knew I have only dedicated 20 per cent of my time on studies so they were intentionally trying to interrupt that. But they are not actually, that is how they do their business. So there will be lot, lots and lots of studies to get through before one ... read more

The Journey begins way before I received one-way ticket on the 12th of September from the American Express on behalf of the World Bank. The Journey begin in 2011 when I decided that in 2012 it will be nice if I can further my studies somewhere overseas, Spain, UK or even Australia who know. To cut the long and administration depressing story short, today I find myself sitting at a small part of UK, hour 30 minutes from London, Brighton or East Sussex, at the University of Sussex. How did I know about this place, laugh out loud (lol), "Dream deferred", Former President Thabo Mbeki studied here. Anyway, back to why I decided to write this blog today, well I would like to believe there are few people who would like to know how are things ... read more

Things started okay with one of the best breakfasts of the trip. Then I ran (not exactly) to the cornerstore for something for lunch as there would be no places enroute. The walk started uphill and up but gentle meaning I wasn’t gasping for breath just a slow, long, long climb. Then for the next hour we had intermittent sun and gray, decent temp and a breeze off the sea. As the wind picked up so did my repercussions from last night’s undercooked duck. I was hunting for bushy, tree places and there weren’t many. After a few quick stops while Ross acted as lookout my system returned to normal. Too bad the immodium was in the suitcase and not my backpack. As we climbed and walked across the escarpment the wind picked up. It literally ... read more

Walking Day 7 Pyecombe to Lewes Poor Wendy at Hobbs Cottage. We said our good-byes, left and were back in 2 minutes because I had no memory card in my camera so I had to go through my suitcase and get it. Said our fond farewells again and then we were back in 5 minutes. I’d left my watch behind. Wendy hunted all over but it was not in the room. Found it tonight – in with the computer hook-up. Our walk was very quiet today. Hardly anyone else was on the downs at all – only a couple of dog walkers and later in the day some crazy joggers running the heights. I do baby steps uphill and they run! Wind was at a minimum and sun out most everywhere we looked. About ... read more

Walking Day 6 Steyning to Pyecombe This was to be a 9 mile day. A short relaxing day. NOT. We got a ride to the start of the SDW and I was thankful for that because it was quite an uphill. Because Steyning is off track quite a bit and we had walked all the way there they give you a ride to the start. Nice long level walk until we get past the first 2 fields and then it was to be a gentle climb and we walked through a pig farm. Neat way of controlling the pigs but they are certainly in a windy part of the country. Downhill to a river where Ross almost took us the wrong way but I was refusing the uphill. Thank goodness I was ... read more

Correction: Imentioned I was reading 1984, when in fact it was Animal Farm as you'll know from the quote i gave. I intended to reread 1984, having just bought 1948, a rhyming spoof, but as i downloaded the complete works of Orwell onto the Kindle, i started them alphabetically, and read Animal farm instead. Friday 27th July to Friday 3rd August Spent a very happy week, though with a little more rain, situated between Rye and Hastings near the East Sussex coast at Pett. This week is completely differnt from the previous few weeks. a family holiday in a large comfortable house with a huge garden, hillocked and burrowed by rabbits and surrounded by woods. The children, aged one to 11 play on the tyres hanging from a tree and explore the woods. We visit Rye ... read more
