We travel tomorrow taxi to Gatwick, flight to Bordeaux, train to Bayonne, train to St Jean pied de port. Planning an early start on Wed morning as we climb from 200m to 1200m over the first 40k then 35k into Pamplona. It looks like it will be raining most of the day. Keen to just get that first climb under the belt.... read more

Got the bikes further prepared today, decided to add an extra water bottle carrier and because of the panniers; a bike stand. We will strap the sleeping back on top of the pannier rack will enclose in the bike air transit bags, to keep the rain out. Pick up Bob at the airport tomorrow and we will work out exactly what we'll be carrying; panniers and how to carry the disassembled bikes to the airport.... read more

Saturday and Sunday were all about family. Staying with Harriet and Dom and their 2 little ones Emily and Ben, on Saturday we had a blessed morning in our PJs and were treated to the best bacon sandwiches ever made for brekkie. We spent the first part of the afternoon exploring the gorgeous gardens of Arundel Castle, where the annual tulip festival had just begun. Stunning. We continued the Mealing family tradition, and had a photo on the lawns in front of the Castle, where my dad was snapped having a family picnic with his mum, dad, brother and sister in 1949. My sister and brother in law recreated the photo when they visited with Harriet and Dom in 2010, then my brother and sister in law did the same a few years later. So generations ... read more

It was a treat to leave from the Frankfurt (Main) Hauptbahnhof...., the gorgeous main train station in downtown Frankfurt. Of course I was completely dismayed to be waiting in a huge open (cold) station at 7 in the morning, but the combination of sweeping architecture and fresh coffee and biscuits kept my senses in awe and my heart warm. It was by chance that my ticket placed me in the first class cabin and I settled in for the six hour ride to London. The route to Brussels was a blur of sleep but the Eurostar train was reminiscent of a movie scene train ride. The staff were ever so polite, tri-lingual, well dressed, and served us a fabulous European lunch. A cold plate of sliced roast beef, potato salad, and another diced-delicious-things salad made me ... read more

Following another tasty personally cooked breakfast and we bid a sad farewell to the Northbrook Arms and the intrepid travellers hit the road – with all gears working and aimed the tiller towards Brighton. For a change Betty (satnav) took us the fastest most sensible way. We did not see any coastal scenery but it was a relaxing drive on major roads all the way. A warning to travellers using Betty or her relatives in the UK. Our Betty is a Garmin and in general we were very happy with her, but her zeal in trying to find the “fastest” route often had unintended consequences. Many of what we would term ‘minor’ roads in the UK are signposted at 60mph but in reality, are single lane very narrow roads; some no better than tracks with a ... read more

Brighton Marina is one of my favourite places to visit. It is very dynamic, yet attractive and relaxing. It has the hustle and bustle of shops, pubs, restaurants and entertainment centres, and is surrounded by beach walks and rock pools. Walking along the marina boardwalk starts off amidst restaurants and bars and even a floating Chinese restaurant. Looking down at the boats from there, gives a view of pleasure cruisers, sailing boats and dinghys and boats to take a fishing trip on. The next section of the marina is quieter and has some seats where you can sit and look at all the private yachts and dream about the boats for sale. The final segment is where the little working fishing boats moor up. There is a distinctly fishy aroma down this end but it is ... read more

I should be packing. I've been meaning to blog about my last weekend trip away but I've been so busy with work and preparing for an upcoming trip that it's been slightly pushed aside. So here it is complete with photos and I promise not to let the next slip by with nothing... After my day trip out to Stonehenge and Bath, I booked a weekend away to Brighton to check out as I've always heard nice things. As much as I do love London, it's also been lovely to get out of the city now and then. The hustle and bustle can be exhausting at times but I also consider myself lucky to be surrounded by so many things to do. As well as being so close to new places to visit and explore. And ... read more

Geo: 50.8552, 0.57292 We left Canterbury in the morning and arrived in Hastings too early to check in to our hotel. So we drove to Battle to see the Battle of Hastings site. This is where England lost its only war on its own soil, to the Normans. There is the ruins of another abbey here, plus the actual battle site and some other old buildings, also. We spent a few hours there and then went and checked in to our hotel. It used to be a group of Victorian houses. Now they are all attached to each other and make up a small hotel. It is right across the street from the ocean, so we had beautiful views. The next morning we got up and drove along the coast to Pevensey Castle. We stayed there ... read more
