Wonderful day today, our last before we leave for home tomorrow so even better that the weather so kindly rewarded us with another absolutely perfect blue sky day. We decided to drive round the country roads to see where they took us. Past quite a few stone quarries which produce the lovely golden Purbeck stone from which many of the houses in the area are built. Then we came to Worth Matravers, a stone village with a duck pond, a little village tearoom, thatched cottages and an obviously very popular pub.. We carried on along the road from there until we came to Renscombe carpark which was where the road stopped. We asked advice about the route to Chapman's Pool but were told the road to it was Really steep, even steeper probably than Durdle Door ... read more

I had fond memories as a child of coming on holiday with my parents with the caravan to Durdle Door,Lulworth Cove and Swanage. The memories are vivid as I would only have been about six or so but the happy feelings are still there, I felt it was time to relive the favourite childhood holiday spot and revisit both areas. Today we planned to visit Corfe Castle then make our way down to Swanage visiting Harry's rocks and Swanage town, before spending a couple of nights in Durdle Door. Corfe Castle is both a village and a ruined castle and has been the site of a castle since the 10th century. The castle is where the young King Edward was murdered by his stepmother so her own son Ethelred could become King. The later part of ... read more

After cooked breakfasts (Eggs Benedict for me), we decided a nice walk along the seafront was in order. The road is downhill so it was an easy walk down and we walked along the beach, looking at the changing cabins and the bay and boats. Along the rock wall, the water was crystal clear and there were large fish floating in a couple of feet of water below. The irony was that there were fisherman fishing along the pier when these big fish were right under your nose on the promenade…. Probably mullet though and not as appealing to eat. We came to the pier and had a cup of tea at the café at the start of it and then continued along the pier to the end, where we chatted to a few fisherman. They ... read more

After a lovely full English breakfast, we walked across the road to St Michael’s church. The graveyard there had the grave of Alice Hargreaves, who was the Alice in the Alice in Wonderland story written by C. S. Lewis. After a walk along the high street, we checked out and set off to Corfe Castle. Corfe Castle is a ruined medieval castle, set on the top of a hill. You can either catch a steam train to it or drive into the village of Corfe. The village has all old style houses with slate or thatched roofs and local stone. We had a late lunch in the Bankes Arms Hotel in the village and then drove to Swanage, where we will be staying for the next 2 nights. On the way, there was a very scenic ... read more

After Corfe Castle, we drove to Swanage and checked out the coast. We then went to dinner at The Ship Inn. It was a lovely little pub, and the portions were large. I had fish and chips with a Guinness. I was barely able to finish. Later, we walked through Swanage a little and then headed back to Basingstoke. We were so tired, and I fell asleep on the drive back. When we arrived back at their home, it was very easy for all of us to fall asleep quickly, and we did just that!... read more

It's a number of days since we made a blog entry - last weekend in Dorchester I think. We've been here in Swanage, Dorset since Sunday and are about to leave tomorrow (Friday). Seems we've packed in a lot of touring and walking since we've been here and found a lot of places to visit and cross off our genealogical list. A very good friend we met through Facebook and the Swanage page has taken time from her busy life to show us very interesting villages and buildings around this part of the UK. Linda Welsh and her husband Derek, lifelong residents of Swanage, had a great meal with us the other night at a restaurant on the town bayside. Our accommodation is very good although we had to ask for a room change due to ... read more

Following my stay in London, I took the train from Waterloo Station down to Wareham in Dorset. Sandra, my British friend, was waiting there in her black sports car to get me, and we drove to her home in Swanage, a lovely beach resort town on the coast. I'd been there to visit her two years previously and was delighted to be back for a 3-day stay. The weather was cool and windy. It would rain, and then all of a sudden the sun would come out, and then it would rain again. The sea was much too cold (for me,at least) to go swimming as I had last time, but I nevertheless took full advantage of the sea air and very much enjoyed my walks, not only in Swanage, but also further along the coast ... read more

One of the most charming Victorian seaside resorts of Britain, i.e. Swanage is accessible by the bus from Poole and Wareham Station, or heritage railway line, i.e. Swanage Railway from Corfe Castle. Swanage retains the feel of its original incarnation as a Victorian seaside resort. There are a number of grand and impressive Victorian buildings along the High Street such as Town Hall or Purbeck House Hotel. If you continue walking on the High Street and Church Hill, you will see the Millpond and Parish Church on the right hand. The Millpond is a picturesque corner that has changed very little over the centuries and is home to glebes, herons, and ducks, and they swim beside the lilacs and water lilies. The Parish Church is the place where the first settlement in the town began. The ... read more

After the six hour flight from New York to London i arrived to the Motherland. I spent a few days in Fulham, London-which i thoroughly enjoyed and will return to in a week-and now my sister and i both took the underground and bus to Swanage, Dorset. This quiant little town by the seaside is a little gem. I had the chance to look around the centre of town today which is dotted with a few second hand stores, some cafes and pubs and other shops which served me a relaxing afternoon. Although the weather wasnt the best today, the beach was still enchanting and reminded me of home. I will definately go there again tomorrow for some time with just myself and God as this time of year it isnt packed with the many tourists ... read more
