I am really getting into the climbing this year and spent an awesome weekend with the Royal Navy climbing club down at Baggy Point in c Croyde. Got some good climbs in on friday and saturday once the rain had cleared up! For the first half of saturday we hid away in a cafe waiting for the rain to stop so we could go out and play. Sunday was really poo and we didnt get any climbs in at all! The weather was bad with fairly string winds so after a chat we all disppeared home which was sad but the way with sports like this. There were quite a few funny moments although no falls luckily! I got drowned by the waves a few times, I think that the sea was after me. every time ... read more

A day out in Dartmouth to experience a production of BBC One's Antiques Roadshow at the Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth in Devon. Lynne, George, Emma and I headed for Dartmouth with Emma's marble clock that needed a couple of us to load it into the car. Due to the strict security measures at the college we had to take the Park and Ride into the base which meant getting out the stacker truck, tying the clock onto it and then heaving it onto the shuttle bus after being frisked by the security guards in the car park. Upon arrival at the college we were directed into the queue which at this stage was over 100 metres long. However, the sun was shining and everyone in the queue was feeling good natured so the waiting wasn't ... read more

We have just spent yet another beautiful weekend at Treyarnon. The sun shone, well mostly, and we celebrated our anniversary in style. Our very own style that is, in the form of a bicycle made for two along the Camel Trail from Padstow to Bodmin (and back) followed by the ferry from Padstow to Rock. That's 22 miles on a TANDEM, if you're interested. The first countdown is to Glastonbury. Four more days of work and then we set off to join the great unwashed. A baptism of fire for our rtw trip or a gentle introduction? You decide! I don't think I quite get "less is more" as yet so watch out for Gregg's complaints. Back to the big trip and I have started emptying draws of "stuff" this evening and have already filled one ... read more

Well, we haven't begun our trip yet, but in the glorious sunshine on the Dart and the fact that both of us have already finished work in our heads, we may as well have begun our adventure. Tonight we decided to do an upmarket BBQ to trial our newest purchase again - a lovely stainless steel boat BBQ which has more than a passing resemblance, in my opinion, to a UFO. I procured king scallops, parma ham, tuna steaks fresh fruit and salad on the way home and lovingly prepared parma ham wrapped scallops on kebabs with huge chunks of mango and pineapple. I would like to tell you how succulent and juicy this culinary delight was ... however, I never even got to eat it! As Mike traversed to the bow (boat word for 'front' ... read more

Thursday 10 June Castle Drogo and Dartmoor We were sad to leave our friends in Topsham but pleased to be on the road towards what was planned to be a restful week across the border in Cornwall. With hindsight, a fortnight might have have been restful - a week wasn't! Our journey today took us up to the very northern edge of Dartmoor, through the pretty village of Drewsteignton, to the weird and wonderful Castle Drogo. We’re certainly making good use of our National Trust membership - we’ve already more than recouped our outlay after visiting a handful of NT properties in the past couple of months. This extravagant pile with its forbidding exterior, the last castle to be built in England, was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, whose works included The Cenotaph in London, Thiepva ... read more

Monday 7 June to Thursday 10 June Topsham - Coleton Fishacre - Kingswear - Dartmouth - Greenway - Totnes It’s strange what you notice on a motorway car journey, isn’t it? Somewhere on the M5, we saw a naked man and a camel. The man was about six metres high and made of wicker. The camel was made of concrete. Now I have your attention, let me bore you with what we’ve been doing for the past few days... The first part of our short break to Devon and Cornwall was to see some very good friends. I resist the temptation to call them very old friends for fear of upsetting them, but they’re also retired and we’ve known them for over thirty years, so perhaps “old” is correct after all. Sorry! Hiya. This is the very first entry I wrote here. Went on a short trip with my friends after the dreadful exams. It was a quick decision. We, originally, were planned to go to Dawlish Warren, but after doing some research online, we decided to change to Teignmouth. Both Dawlish Warren and Teignmouth are just right below Exeter - the place we study. It takes about 25 minutes from Exeter to Teignmouth by train. The train ticket is unexpectedly cheap, with our young person railcard, costs about 2.5 pounds for round way. Teignmouth is a very small place (town?) where the coastline is located. Its easy to get to the beach from the train station. People are friendly (except the waitress in the restaurant). The beach is impressive too, with nice weather and ideal temperature, we ... read more

Second UK May Bank Holiday, spend it in London? Naaaah, why bother when there's a big park a few (or more) hours drive from London. Thsi weekend it was off with one of my beloved hiking groups to hike around the Moors with some side activities thrown in! Everyone on the trip managed to car share, so for me it was a cushy drive from South London (cushy because I was just a passenger, thanks Daryl!!). Everything was going to plan until we hit the 3 miles past Stonehenge - my tip is if possible avoid this area at all costs on the Friday of the long weekend - I could have run the 3 miles quicker and trust me, running isn't my strong point! The old 3 lanes, into 2, into 1 congestion cost us ... read more

G'day!!! First we'd like to thank you all for subscribing to the blog - hope everybody is well? As most of you are aware, we are still waiting for our Aussie Visa's to come through, so we have decided to do some travelling along the way. Our first stop being Auckland in New Zealand, where we will meet up with our good friends Matt (Smiler) & Kate (Wheels). The 4 of us have hired a beast of a campervan to do a tour of the Kiwi Country, so yes we've joined the Caravan Club!!! All our goodbye's and farewells have been said - just a few last minute bits to try and fit into our backpacks!!! Our Leaving party was great, thanks to all that came along - a cracking night was had by all!!! A ... read more

Friday 30.4.2010 day 198 Ghost Tours and Devil’s stones Today we went on a ghost tour with our resort to Shebbear there is a devil stone there that was ether dropped out of the devils pocked when he came to earth or he though the stone at the nearby church and missed. The stone appeared on the 10th of November 1616 and each year on this date 6 church bell ringers turn the stone over with the whole village looking on. The stone is turned to keep the devil away. After looking at the stone we went into the nearby church. The church was locked and when we found someone to open it for us they told us that the church was locked due to someone going into the church and turning all the heaters on ... read more
