Hello friends. When last we spoke, I was in the lovely town of Salzburg. Funny place, if you were a local you would go crazy, you can't go 10 minutes without some puffed up tourist breaking into song. Some better than others. Took a couple days off, so to speak. Enjoyed a nice dinner and glass of wine by myself. I think the waiting staff was confused, or thought I had been stood up, because it took them an hour and a half to ask for my order. Austrian food = gives greek food a run for its money. Not a long run, mind you fish, but it is damn good. Lots of gravy, dumplings, caramelized onions, and good icecream. Also, sorry to everyone else, but note to fish: this hostel was AMAZING. will send you ... read more

Sitting in my Sister in laws in Plymouth having just safely returned Rory (11) and Theo (8) after a weeks holiday with their Aunt Liz and Uncle Alan. Had a great time at a campsite near the tiny hamlet at Hope Cove. We visited Kinsbridge and Salcombe by bus and Ferry and walked for miles out to a couple of beaches at Hope Cove and Thurlstone. The boys ate copious amounts of ice cream etc and seemed to survive a week with us in the van. The dog (Rhubarb) came with us and aslo seemed to enjoy the experience. Prior to the holiday with the kids we had a day at Mount Edgecombe country park, Nr. Plymouth) where we met up with some friends of Nigel (brother in law) who were on holiday from Madrid where ... read more

Devon, England 8/7 - 8/10 So we arrived in Devon at about 2am on Friday the 7th. Will’s Mum was still waiting up, with a Pizza ready to go into the oven. She is ABSOLUTELY incredibly sweet; turned her dining room into a little room for us with two little blow up mattresses and matching linens. She also had a pile of maps and phrase books set aside for us. I don’t believe we went to sleep until about 5am from talking and catching up! Jenny (Will’s Mum) and he have a super cute flat in a town called Honiton, which used to be famous for its lace. The town is so very quaint! So the next morning we took baths, since there is no shower - which I think is wonderful! Then Will took us ... read more

Saturday 1st August In search of Basil in Torquay Today we are off to visit and stay in a town that has been top of our list since 1975 and that wonderful TV series Fawlty Towers. For those readers who don’t know it and haven’t seen Basil and Sybil try to run the perfect British seaside hotel then you have missed classic comedy at its very best.Basil played by John Cleese is a bumbling but very likeable hotel owner while Sybil, his wife(played by a name that just escapes me for the moment)is ‘a would be if she could be’type and tries to keep Basil in order.Together with a Spanish porter and various guests they create mayhem in each half hour programme. Anyway its not that we expect to find that the proprietors of our hotel tonight will ... read more

Geo: 50.3704, -4.14265 We awoke to gray skies and rain but this is England so this comes as no surprise. I am not complaining...It still beats snow. We had a big breakfast then hopped in the car to go see the city of Plymouth. It was much larger then we had thought it would be. We parked the car then walked around the main shopping area looking for the Tourist Information office. We found out that it is located near the sea front so off we went. On the way to the sea front we walked by this huge anchor from a military ship that was a must for a photo. When we got to the seafront and the Plymouth light house there was a bus rally going on. All kinds of buses. New, old, single ... read more

Well, it was off to Devon for the weekend with my girlfriends, Hannah (friend who got married in Feb), Emma, Bethany and Julie. I was the only non-family member that came along so it was special. On Friday, we drove about 5 hours north to North Devon to a small village called Berrynabour, voted the best kept village for several years now. It's an award for the whole of England which is pretty darn good! We stayed in the Ducky Pool Cottage (Hannah's parents own it). Saturday morning we got up rather late and didn't have much morning left, ate some breakfast and got ready for sea-bracing! We went to the seaside in Woolacombe for some bodyboarding, luckily we had wetsuits to keep us relatively warm. The weather was pretty crazy and ended up pouring but ... read more

So, back to England in time for Matt’s bro’s wedding in Sussex. He and Gemma got married in Gemma’s old boarding school chapel. It was so lovely and traditional…apart from the helicopter at the end! Nobody knew about that except for the newly-weds. They had decided to get back as quickly as possible so that they got their photos out of the way before everyone arrived. The weather had really been playing up but managed to stay dry for when we left the church and for the Champagne reception back at the very stately country house where the reception was held (It’s called Newick Park Hotel and Country Estate in case anyone’s looking for an exclusive escape in the picturesque Sussex countryside) arrived back at the hotel for the reception. When we arrived, there was a ... read more

Today's jaunt was relatively short in distance. I we thought that we had seen the worst in roads by driving thru the Highlands..... WRONG!! A little trick to driving in the Devon area... when the center line strip disappears - brake NOW! Roads will immediatley squeeze down to 5 ft wide (seems a lot narrower) and usually it happens at a curve with high hedges. Scenery makes it all worth it. We drove out to the south western tip of the island.Very windy and sporadic rain. After being soaked to the skin we mad it back to the car and went to Falmouth. Dinner at the Captain's Table. Wonderfull scallops. Oh and by the way, we have covered a lot of this island and have yet to see any peanut butter. (I'm just saying - Lori) ... read more

We jumped in the car and left Cwmbran and headed out to Bath. Once again a little difficult to navigate around with some of the exits at roundabouts unmarked. I have learned that if I can't find the exit that I want...... I just keep circling till I find what I m looking for. I am quite sure that I am making thre locals nuts. OK now we found Bath... pretty good signs to the long term parking. Let the fun begin. very poor signs to find the big attraction here, the Roman baths. Got on the hop on hop off tour and found the general location. The wait was worth it!!! The area was excavated starting around the 1800's. A magnificent walk thru the 2000 year old baths and pumping house. We were walking on ... read more
