Ah. So. Time for a new adventure I think. It's been a while for this travel blog, but time to break it out so my parents don't think I'm dead. My new adventure began with a tearful metro ride to the train station. Downside to living in a new place temporarily - you have to say goodbye to all your new best friends. All we needed were a few cameras and a film crew to capture our last heart wrenching moments on the metro platform as Kristen sobbed into my bed sheet that I gave her and I pulled my hand from hers to jump onto the metro at the last minute. Train ride to Guangzhou where I missed the last train to the airport for 12 rmb and instead took a cab for 120. Doing ... read more

Ah, the phrase of the month: xin nian kuai le!! or happy new year. As I wind down from celebrating that old fashioned western new year that takes place on january first and is only celebrated for one night, the chinese new year has arrived in a rush of choreographed dances, holiday bonuses in red envelopes, and masses of red decorations. It appears to be celebrated for at least 5 or 6 weeks, to cover everyone's differing vacation times (seems illogical but really should cut down on the travel traffic.) Next travel blog will feature two travel guests, dear old mum and dad are coming on a whirlwind tour of southwest china/vietnam, so if they dont' live to tell their tale of squat toilets and filthy hostels and night buses where people cut money out of ... read more

Hello all! Gave you some halloween pictures of my kids. Thought I would share my chinese progress with you, give you an idea of how it's going. Wrote a mini essay on how I celebrate my christmas back home, while having a chinese character desktop application allows you to make cool looking chinese writing, you have to hope that the first suggested character that pops up is the correct one, seeing as for every tone less spelling of a word in pinyin there are 3 to 8 different characters that could be the word you are looking for. (since corrected) Popped it into google translate to see ... read more

Hello friends! It appears to have been quite a time since I made an official update. Thankfully no one was fearing too terribly for my wellbeing, because I received no frantic calls from the US embassy. Since I last wrote, I have visited a few more places, but seeing as I am settling in quite comfortably here, I thought it would be appropriate to write a commentary on my current existence. My apartment: a wonderful place to relax after a long day. I recently obtained an electric hot plate stove, and struggled for a few hours before realizing (or being told) that it was weight activated, and did not respond to my insistent pressing of the buttons as I tried to make it hot. However, all was solved and I tried my first fully home cooked ... read more

Hello friends! It has been a long time since I wrote, I've been busy doing things worth writing about. Got back this morning from a well earned summer vacation in the most beautiful place in China - Guangxi province, namely Guilin and Yangshuo. If you've ever seen a Chinese painting with a river, mountains, and a tiny boat floating serenely through the middle of the picture, you've seen Yangshuo. So much has happened I though I'd revert to my standby of bullet points of important events. Arrived in Guilin with a coworker from school, Kristen, who coincidentally was from that area and said I could spend a few days at her house. Naively expecting her to live in an apartment in the middle of the city, I hopped on her minibus and realized quickly 'from guilin' ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong July 30th 2010

Hello All! Thought I would make my location Hong Kong even though I am at my trusty starbucks in Shenzhen because I went there two weeks ago and haven't updated since. My fault for telling you all to email me, used up all my internet time replying. Hong Kong though, what a place! Definitely on my list of suggested places to visit. Wandered into a Marks and Spencers and looked fondly at all the English food, then walked a street over to a Chinese marketplace where you can buy your live fish and dig through second hand Chinese stores complete with ancient looking chinese scrolls or ratty old shrek dolls. Hopped onto a random ferry and saw the famous victoria harbor skyline. Someone very smart designed Hong Kong and decided all those people wandering around on ... read more

Hello All! Phrase of the Week: My Knee Hurts! Vocab words: Goldfish, seahorse, shell, bubbles, starfish. So second week of teaching flew by! Just read over my last china entry and it was dreadfully dry, so apologies for that. When I end up at my computer after a long and tiring week I seem to just sludge out some boring junk about my day, when there are much more interesting things I could be telling you. For example: Women in China do not shave. I find this comforting, and something I feel very happy to join in with because I am very lazy. Still amusing to see women with really hairy legs though. In restaurants/food making establishments, there is no need to dispose of unwanted parts of the animals body (i.e. eyes, bones, skin, feet) because ... read more

Hello all! Phrase of the week: I feel hot. I feel cold. Vocabulary: Dog, Playing, Eating, Napping. It seems like a really long time since I last wrote but it's been only a week. That's what being spoiled for internet does to you I guess. Bought a cinnamon bun in starbucks and in exchange they let me use their internet, very decent of them. Thank you for your comments, always make me smile, feel free to email me as well! Always look forward to a good update. Dr. Ingalls sorry I didnt' tell you I was going to China! So let's see... Shenzhen - southern China, touching Hong Kong, population = maybe 18 million? No one knows because everyone is illegal. But judging on my bus journeys I would agree with18 million, maybe more. Hello friends, Welcome to the welcome back entry of Av's travel blog. Apologies to those who were glad to be free of the (semi) constant emails describing every piece of food that Fish and I ingested during our months in Europe but said little about what we were actually doing. If you would rather not hear about my life, please unsubscribe now. I'm not sure how easy this website is to figure out (are you reading this grannie?) so I apologize if you are forced to read these entries. The travel blog website is clearly an easy way for me to avoid personal contact with a huge list of people that have at least a slight interest in what I am doing, so if you prefer a more direct form of communication or a more personalized ... read more

North America » United States » California » Pomona January 15th 2010

Not sure if I mentioned, but I came back to America. I figured the best way to escape the freezing temperatures and icy roads of good old new hampshire was to head off to sunny california for a med school interview. I thought a rather academic way of debriefing my trip would be to clear up some misconceptions that are held about this state. 1. California is not as nice as New Hampshire. MYTH: california is in fact much nicer than NH, there are more palm trees, more sunny days, and more happy people. 2. I can't actually think of any more. Either way it was a great week, had my first solo couch surfing experience and stayed with two wonderful hosts, anthony and mike. Anthony showed me the beautiful mountains and all the plants and ... read more
