These photography workshops also involve starting early in the morning to be out for sunrise, which is the best time of day for photography. There's the great light and there's no one else mad enough to be out, so there's no one photo-bombing the pictures. Despite knowing that I was going to have a whole week of being up early, I decided to get up and head out to the nearby Castlerigg stone circle for the sunrise. There was no sunrise, sadly, so I should have stayed in bed. It was light when I got back so it was the first time that I was able to see the view out of my hotel room window. It was a great view and one that I could have enjoyed from my warm bed! After the mother of ... read more

You may have noticed that I am really into my photography and it can sometimes take over the holidays, much to the annoyance of my poor “photography widow” wife, who is actually very patient and tolerant with me. This holiday, however, was just me, on my own, going on a photography workshop in Rannoch Moor in Scotland. I had decided to drive up, so to split the 470 mile journey I stopped for a night in the Lake District. I had always thought that the Lake District was a long, long way north, but it’s actually only half way to Glencoe, where we will be based on the edge of Rannoch Moor. After several miles of signs warning about speed-cameras, I was not far from the Lake District, when I saw a flash of light in ... read more

With 4 days to spare between my tickets at Old Trafford and My tickets and the Oval I had no real plans until quite recently. There was the possibility of another game of cricket in the UK with Rich, but at the wedding I was talking to one of Richie’s cricketing mates, Brett, who still plays and he said, “Why would you want to do that again? You’ve already played cricket in England.” So, I decided to go to the Lake District up north. I came without any real preconceptions and what I found was a little like the Cotswolds in that there are some very pretty little towns. But that wouldn’t have kept me entertained for the three nights I had booked. There was also a lot to see in the great outdoors. I arranged ... read more

Yesterday is ancient history. Gone are the mist riddled moors of Cross Fell, the rain soaked dales of Knock Pike and the unsighted peaks of Great Dun Fell and Little Dun Fell (6 m height difference and what a difference name wise!) and instead gentle gradients overs well maintained pathways. Sure the gentle gradients go through a heap of fields and yes they were a bit wet taking a toll on Julie’s boots but the biggest obstacle is the fact that just about each fence needs to be crossed using a stile. As such heaps of stiles were the order of the day. They come in all shapes, sizes, configurations and each presents it’s own unique problem. Some are so skinny you pack gets stuck which is a bit embarrassing, some so skinny at the base ... read more

Friday the 13? Not exactly but it is Friday and it is the 13th day of our walk. And disaster strikes. We could not make today’s walk. We left Dufton prepare for a tough day and knowing we had 25 km and just on 1000 m ascent. But the mud, bog, a slight navigation error and then howling winds, thick blanketing fog and pelting rain forced a decision. We had reached Knock Fell, the highest point on the walk so far and had 2 km to reach the highest point of the Pennine Way but the fog made it unsafe for us to continue as the track was barely discernible and for us dangerous. There was no one around anywhere so we simply turned and walked the 10 km back to almost where we commenced this ... read more
Nearly missed a Pennine Way signpost. Didn’t. Still OK.
Dufton Pike. Don’t have to climb this one. We have bigger fish to fry. Still OK.
Lovely. Not really OK, it can’t continue.

29 August 2019, Thursday Day 13 of travel day 9 on the coast to coast. Our departure from The George Hotel in Orton was followed very closely by a visit to the Orton chocolate factory. This is also known as the Kennedy chocolate factory. After our very nice breakfast we each had a sample of chocolate. You will see a few photos of the chocolates and the shop. The day was marked by walking across many green rolling hills of pastures, crossing many rock wall fences and a few picturesque views of limekilns and railroad trestles. It was also punctuated by extremely strong winds and gusts with some light rain. For the first time during the walk I had to wear my poncho over everything to help keep me dry and warmer from the blowing wind. ... read more

I’m fairly certain we have walked from County Durham into the county of Cumbria. Tomorrow we do walk to Alston and that is Cumbria (how come everyone says Cumbria not County Cumbria but no one says Durham and everyone uses Country Durham?) whilst tonight we are sort of half way. We are actually in Dufton. And the excuse for the lack of blog yesterday. You’ll be surprised to know it has nothing to do with cider or pints of anything. We had walked 37 km so that’s a big day but that too had nothing to do with it. Our accommodation the Langdon Beck Hotel which was really good had very old electrics and Julie’s universal plug was a mystery to the system. The ipad is my camera but it also contains much information that I ... read more

28 August 2019, Wednesday Day 12 of travel, day 8 on the Coast to Coast Brampton Grange to Orton via Shap. It was a night fighting the comforter. At 0030, I took the stuffing out and slept well with just the sheet. After breakfast we left the Crowne and Mitre with the path to connect to the main coast to coast path at Rosgill bridge. This is a little more than 2 miles to the ruins of Shap Abbey The photos and signs tell the tale but this was a massive church and community until King Henry VIII drove all Catholics out of England or killed them. Most of the stones have been removed and reused elsewhere. After about 2 hours and 40 minutes walking up and down the grassy hills and over a unique horse ... read more

27 August 2019, Tuesday Day 11 of travel day 7 on the C2C. At the Fairlight Guesthouse, breakfast was served promptly at 0800. I had the vegetarian breakfast with potato waffles, mushrooms baked tomato and vegan sausage with an egg. By 0930 I had walked the ten minutes to the boat and purchased tickets for the five leaving on the 9:45 ferry to Pooley Bridge. The group rate was 45 GBP which included the 10% discount for taking the early sailing. It was a gorgeous Sunny ride across the lake which was smooth as glass. The mountains around the lake were quite charming as were the people with their dogs on board. One of the two couples from Israel was also on the boat. The other couple had elected to do the very difficult hike over ... read more

25 August 2019, Sunday Day 9 of travel and a day around Grasmere and the lakes district. Today is a much-welcomed rest day. Our breakfast did not start here at the Tweeties Bar and Lodge until 8:15. We had been so tired and it was so late when we arrived last night that we simply ate, took a shower and went to bed. This morning I did my washing for the week in the shower hoping it would dry. It is peak holiday season here in the lake district. The game festival has brought 1000s more to Grasmere. Roads jammed and every inch of space filled with parked cars. It is like a big State Fair. After breakfast Chuck and Janet went to the church at St Oswald's Church in Grasmere. This churchyard is where William ... read more
