Leaving the Crowne and Mitre
28 August 2019, Wednesday
Day 12 of travel, day 8 on the Coast to Coast
Brampton Grange to Orton via Shap.

It was a night fighting the comforter. At 0030, I took the stuffing out and slept well with just the sheet.

After breakfast we left the Crowne and Mitre with the path to connect to the main coast to coast path at Rosgill bridge. This is a little more than 2 miles to the ruins of Shap Abbey
The photos and signs tell the tale but this was a massive church and community until King Henry VIII drove all Catholics out of England or killed them. Most of the stones have been removed and reused elsewhere.

After about 2 hours and 40 minutes walking up and down the grassy hills and over a unique horse bridge we arrived in Shap. We found a cafe for lunch and used Rome2Rio app to get bus schedule for Janet to ride to Orton. It was still 8.5 miles and 800 feet of elevation gain across some muddy terrain to get there The bus took 14 minutes.

Having not read the guidebook carefully enough we missed Robin Hood's grave

First stiles of many
and another druid circle which were along the path. At 1706 we made it to the George Hotel in Orton.

The last few days we have been walking with a couple from Australia, Sam and Denise, and the two couples from Israel. We are all staying at The George Hotel and last night we were all at the Crown and Mitre. Denise whose given name is Ayse, is originally from Istanbul. She is a subparticle physicist and after meeting Sam, also a physicist, lives in Adelaide. The are both professors at the University of Adelaide.

Stats for the day again estimated 13.3 miles, 6 hours 50 minutes walking and about 1000 feet elevation gain.
