We decided to stay put in our accommodation in Great Broughton and headed to Maryport on the suggestion of our host to watch the great Trawler Race. We weren’t disappointed as the walk around the harbour was an eye-opener and most enjoyable. I happened to strike up a conversation with a owner-skipper of the trawler, “Silver Fern”, and was invited on board for a look around and even invited to stay on board and partake in the race out at sea, the Irish Sea. I declined as I have enough trouble staying upright standing still on level ground let alone on the deck of a trawler as it surges through the waves … “Man overbooooaaaarrrd!” We stayed, watched and enjoyed all of the decorated, flag flying trawlers depart safe harbour. The tide had come in, the ... read more

We followed Jane’s suggestion and did a 70min Lake Windermere boat cruise. Very scenic and very relaxing. Keswick, the headquarters for adventurers of any ilk followed. Then … one of the best drives we have done in our short lives … from Keswick to Grange to Stonethwaith to Seatoller through and over mountains by the Honister Pass with gradient of 25-30% in many places to Buttermere, Lorton, Cockermouth and finally our destination, Great Broughton. The road, windy, narrow, with hundreds of metres drop-off on the left of the car for a great part of the slow journey, but scenery so very spectacular that it was unfortunate that we couldn’t stop to photograph whenever we wanted as there were no stopping points. Drop-off one side, stone wall or mountain side and scree the other. With vehicles approaching ... read more

With Rob and Mary’s generosity we left with Mary’s Mercedes-Benz convertible for the Lake District. Speed along the Motorways was constantly high and even at 70mph and a few times 80mph many vehicles flashed past. We made for the southern end of Lake Windermere before following its eastern shore north to the town of Windermere. We had stopped on its shores about 5km before the actual town for a brief wander before arriving at our accommodation at Holly Lodge B&B. Our welcome was very warm and friendly and we were shown to our luxurious room. Another accommodation winner. It was so comfortable that we both fell asleep for a couple of hours. After very briefly wandering the main street we headed off to explore the environment. Now, the Lake District is world renowned for its magnificent ... read more

After our awesome and relaxing afternoon yesterday having only had a short walk to complete, I wasn’t too enamoured with the prospect of a long day today. It had been so good to chill out in front of the log fire and rest my weary legs and battered body, but the challenge doesn’t relent and so it was that at 0630hrs I was up and packing my day sack again! A short van drive down to the American groups accommodation was hardly noticed due to the fact I was desperate for the loo, flipping Pete and his relentless nagging about staying hydrated! If he tells me 1 more time about the benefits of being hydrated I swear I’ll get him a water boarding session with the CIA for Christmas!! Anyway we were soon off with quite ... read more

The previous day was so long and arduous that once we had rolled into our accommodation for the night all we wanted to do was eat and go to bed! To be fair it was excellent digs and our guides did a good job of getting our soaked hiking boots filled with newspaper and into the establishments boiler room. I was personally so pleased with the standard of accommodation tonight, a nice big room and excellent shower facilities made a hacking day end a bit better. Up bright and early for the next leg to Orton we had a hearty breakfast and a decent packed lunch on board, we were looking forward to a shorter and easier day today. There was a comedy moment when our guide Matt said “right let’s go” and promptly started off ... read more

Day Five: The Romans Came...Conquered...Retreated...after 300years ...September 30 The trail today was steep, rugged and of a “be careful” nature. There were nineteen such situations. The walk went along crags/outcrops with sharp drops off the right side of the path and vertigo causing downs for every steep up during the whole day. The vistas to be viewed are the best to be had while doing the Hadrian's Wall Walk. It is the portion most looked forward to by walkers. The only part of this torture-to-my-wonky-knee-walk that I completed was the climb to the Walltown Crag.To get there I walked thru the Walltown Quarry from where much of the stone used for the wall was taken. My day had begun by leaving Old RepeaterStation Inn behind … and not soon enough. The room was reasonably clean. The ... read more

Kate took another day out due to a heavy cold so it’s down to me (Pete) to write today’s entry. This was the longest day in terms of mileage and climbing we were due to cover just over 15 miles with a long and steep climb near the beginning of the day and another slightly less steep climb towards the end of the day. Personally although I can see how people found the day hard I don’t wish to sound big headed when I say I didn’t find it challenging. I thought it was however a beautiful day filled with awesome scenery and brilliant company. We started off from the accommodation along a quiet country driveway beside some traditional Lake District cottages, soon leaving these behind we started ascending past some spectacular waterfalls. There has been ... read more

The cold I had started to get came on with a vengence in the army part of the previous evening meaning I had a decision to make about walking.....on the guides advice I decided I would take a day in the van instead and was promptly joined by Pete’s mother and Jess all in the van for a rest!! We drove to Ambleside for a little shopping and then through to Patterdale to await the others who had trekked into location. Pete will write the rest of the blog from here..... I was the last Garrett standing on the trip after a particularly hard previous day for the girls. James our guide for the day gave us a quick briefing on the go as our hotel had delayed the collection of the packed lunches much to ... read more

Rising from our accommodation this morning I was pleased to see some good quality fruit was on offer for breakfast, we had been staying in a rather basic but very pleasant B+B where apparently the sighting of red squirrels was a frequent occurance. The weather was horrendous so I was not surprised by their no show, I wanted to stay in bed myself having come down with a cold during the night. It was touch and go whether I would take a day in the van or actually do the days walk, my feet were battered, I was tired, my joints all aches I had blisters and now a cold too; in short I was struggling to function, couple that with one of the hardest days walking we were due and I had a decision to ... read more

Another early start awaited me this morning but at least I had slept really well this time, I was a little achy from the first days walking but in good spirits for the day ahead. It was going to be a long day but happily I had been informed it would be largely flat until near the end. After the first day we had decided to dramatically re-arrange the day sacks so that Pete’s mother Judy didn’t have one at all and I would have the one that she had been using. This worked really well I felt a lot better with the new day sack although after Pete had stuffed it with extra water and items he couldn’t fit in his one I thought it was a little on the heavy side. The walk started ... read more
