As it turned out, we never made it to Switzerland on the day we planned. A baggage handler's strike left us stranded in Santorini (I can hear you all sighing with pity). I added a postscript to the last blog entry if you are wondering how on earth we managed to console ourselves with the devastating news. Anyway, two days later we found ourselves in Interlaken, the alpine playground of the Swiss. From there, we took an overnight train to Venice, then another overnight train to Nice, France, then a few trains along the cote d'zure and into Avignon, a bus to Arle then drove like a bat out of hell to Belves in the Dordogne where we collapsed at the house of our friend Nellie. Whhoooo. Finally we have both access to the internet and ... read more

Continued from Florence As anyone who has traveled with Mike can tell you he was asleep moments after boarding the train. We were in a small coachette on the left side of the train, for the first part of our run. Something tells me mike road with his back to the direction we were traveling but that really doesn’t sound like him. I know I road facing our travel as I was FINALLY passing through that wonderful section of scenery between Florence and Bologna. This was the first time in about 18 months since I had passed this way and I didn’t want to miss it for anything. As the train started to meander out of town to the north we settled in. Once in Bologna we were now on “New To Us” territory. The train ... read more

All is peace and love in this Paradise called Gimmelwald. Everywhere but at Helmut's. Helmut runs a hostel and a hotel there. I made a big blunder, allowing the tourism office at the Bern train station make a reservation for me, and they arranged things at Helmut's. I was told the hostel was full, so the reservation was at the more expensive hotel. So I am hiking from Murren to Gimmelwald, and the first thing I come to in Gimmelwald was home sweet home! The Mittaghorn hotel, run by Walter. Nothing fancy, but quaint as can be. Big beautiful cows, with bells around their necks peering through the windows! This place was heaven. Some places, you know when you arrive you belong there. Such was the name of this place. There was only one slight problem. ... read more

May 1993 Europe & U.K. Driving towards Switzerland from Paris, via Beaune and Basel, we started noticing the colour of the rivers changing. A beautiful blue, rather than a muddy brown. Entering Switzerland was like entering another world. Everything about Switzerland seemed so clean and fresh, steep green slopes and forests. Paul even vouched for the water from the rivers after going for a run while we were there. We first went to Luzern and walked over the Chapel Bridge, amazing to think that this bridge was originally built in 1333. We were fortunate to have seen it before much of it had to be replaced after a fire in August 1993. There were interesting paintings inside the bridge depicting some of Lucerne's history from the 17th century. Next onto another tourist trap to look at ... read more

I happened on a great deal from Club Med for a ski week at their club at Leysin, Switzerland, where the kids were free and Linda and I were half price. So from Saturday, December 30, 1989 through Saturday, 6 January 1990 I spent a week skiing while Tamara and Rosanna participated in the children's club that included some very elementary bunny slope skiing, and Linda watched Will, who was too young for their children's club. When I say I skiied, I perhaps overly exaggerate. The snow conditions were not ideal, and I had to exchange my skiis halfway through the week when the metal edge came loose from hitting a rock. I joined an English speaking class; the other option was French. In reality both were French because our instructor didn't know any English. I ... read more
