SO much to update and struggling with a keyboard where all the letters are in the wrong place!!!! On Thursday last week? I bid a fond farewell to my lifestyle of sun and drinks in malaysia to make the long slog to Europe. 3 planes and 15 hours later I landed in Basel, Switerland. After a short bus ride into the city? I was gleefully met by my friend Rosie atthe train station ( I stayed with her and her brother in england last year in Bournemouth)? so almost a year to the date I was on her doorstep again with a smile. Lord only knows how I made it through the day, zith time changes, I had effectively been awake since 3am. Rosie went back to work, and I set about checking out Bsel, which is located on ... read more

Switzerland is best known as a neutral country during most of last century. This is very surprising because Switzerland bordered war-torn Austria, France, Italy, Liechtenstein, and Germany during the great wars. The official language in Switzerland is German but most people do also speak a bit of French and English to some degree. The population is just over 7 million. There are over 11 million tourists visit this country annually. Geneva and Interlaken is just a couple of the many highlights this country has to offer. My stop was in the beautiful city of Bern, the capital of Switzerland. Switzerland is very expensive and is better known as a tourist spot than anything else. You’ll need to budget at least CN$40-50 spending money per day. The Alps is the main attraction to see visit Switzerland, with ... read more

My trip along the Silk Road begins oddly enough in Switzerland - and why not! I visited a very good friend from a previous trip to Central America some three years ago. I stayed for almost a week in Zurich, and it was great. Zurich feels like a northern city with Southern influences, and despite the fact that there are approx. 30% foreign workers, their influence on the city was to me surprisingly little, compared to other cities with much lower immigrant ratios. A small compact and beautiful city with a sense of tradition, built in some part on banking history. Under the streets of Zurich are stored the gold and riches of many, but despite letting my imagination run wild it was hard to envisage. Summer came early when I was in Zurich - it ... read more

Right after finishing up my semester in Lithuania, I flew down to Geneva via Copenhagen in order to join my travel study (Geneva 2 Rome, TWU). Due to flight schedules, I ended up flying in the night before the group arrived. Since I had never been in the city and couldn’t stomach prices for transportation or lodging, I stayed in the Airport over night. A must do experience for everybody (once is enough though). Geneva was a fun airport to do this in, because it is a minor enough transport hub to actually shut down at night. The police came by to make sure that those of us who were staying would be staying all night, and then proceeded to lock the doors. I assumed that there was some form of fire escape available to us, ... read more

The hostal here in Interlaken is really good; i met alot of cool cats and there is a nite club in the basement. The bad thing is they wake you up at 9am and make you leave your room...this so you will want to do one of their activies so you have something to do in the day. So today I ended up going rock climbing up in the alps. It was a really amazing experience but i'm so tired after climbing and hiking the day before. I think I need a vacation. Switzerland gives me a great feeling; so tranquil and peace yet you see the swiss army walking with machine guns and fighter jets flying through the mountains. In fact I had a drink with of the army guys at the bar...it's manditory ... read more

Switzerland is a trip man..The scenic beatuy is the amazing thing i've ever seen anywhere. I headed up into the alps past interlaken and took cable cars around to different villages. The best of these is the 150 person town of Gimmelwald. Here you see villages living like they always have raising cattle and growing hay. The views are unbeatable and the swiss are very nice people. On the other hand prices are so high in this country it's actually comical. Like coffie and a muffen costs 7 US dollars or so. A half liter soda is 3 dollars. The answer: don't buy anything and just enjoy the view.... read more

Yes! Gimmelwald must be one of the most beautiful places on earth. The songs of birds, the sound of brooks and all this natural beauty leave one awestruck. It has been said "When I die, if Heaven isn't what it's cracked up to be, send me back to Gimmelwald" - true enough. We made our way into the heart of the Swiss Alps. After a stop in Interlaken, we rode a gondola lift up to traffic-free Gimmelwald and sleept in our creaky old chalet - Pension Gimmelwald. Next day we took a ride up to the Schilthorn at 10,000 feet and hiked part way down. For more Alpine thrills, we took hikes to the foot of the majestic Eiger and Jungfrau peaks. Back at the chalet, we had fondue for dinner.... read more

I got up this morning around 7am. I have neglected to do laundry until now (except a few pairS of socks I washed my dancing on in the bath tub w/ shampoo as I showered in Lyon), so I took it all down to the laundry room, went up took a shower, ate breakfast, and it just finished the wash, so I have another hour and a half before I can pack up to change rooms and leave for the day. The guy who runs the hostel recommended a hike just across the lake which I'm looking forward to, should take about 4 hours plus getting there and back. I had breakfast with a British girl who was coming to the end of a month long trip around France and Spain. She was nice, but a ... read more
