Stanserhorn
Snow on the mountains, but 25 Degrees C and Paul in shorts May 1993
Europe & U.K.
Driving towards Switzerland from Paris, via Beaune and Basel, we started noticing the colour of the rivers changing. A beautiful blue, rather than a muddy brown. Entering Switzerland was like entering another world. Everything about Switzerland seemed so clean and fresh, steep green slopes and forests. Paul even vouched for the water from the rivers after going for a run while we were there.
We first went to Luzern and walked over the Chapel Bridge, amazing to think that this bridge was originally built in 1333. We were fortunate to have seen it before much of it had to be replaced after a fire in August 1993. There were interesting paintings inside the bridge depicting some of Lucerne's history from the 17th century.
Next onto another tourist trap to look at watches & music boxes. Of course we had to buy a music box – but we couldn’t afford one of the more fancy ones, so we bought a small one enclosed in Perspex. We still have it and wind it up periodically and listen to its beautiful sound.
Another highlight was taking the funicular railway that was built in 1893,
Switzerland
The lion monument beautifully carved with writing underneath it and a cable car up the Stanserhorn. What a stunning view from up there! It was most definitely breathtaking and one of the best views we have ever seen. We couldn’t believe how warm it was as well, even with some snow on the mountains. We could also hear the cow bells down below. What a special moment.
The hotel we stayed in was like a picture from a postcard - beautiful wood. Typical Swiss style that authenticated our stay in Switzerland. Unfortunately we didn’t take a photograph of it and I am beginning to realise why there is a lack of pictures. Most of the scenes I still have in my mind must be from all the videos that Paul took while we were touring. He definitely saw Europe through the lens of a video recorder that holiday! They are still all on video cassettes and I don’t have a clue how to digitize it to put it onto the blog!
Once again time was too short and we had to be on our way again. I could come back here again and again! Onwards to
Italy..
