There is something wild about standing on a sheet of ice in a tank top and being hot. No, this isnt a indoor skating rink, but the top of Steinglacier. It was quite warm, even in the mountians the day in went ice climbing. After being outfitted with special boots, and packing a borrowed backpack full of fleeces, crampons (spikes for the bottoms of the boots) ice hammers, larger ice axes, harnesses, ropes and carabeeners, the guide and us 9 advertures headed out to Steinglacier. After an hour of fast mountain driving, the glacier was in view. Our guide, whos name i cant pronounce, said "good morning glacier" as we pulled up. The next thing we know we have walked right up to the edge of "steiny", and after a short lesson in global warming, put ... read more

Spent not enough time in Bern, as i was there enroute to Wales. From what i saw Bern is BEAUTIFUL. Fantastic architecture and clocks on every tower. Ate a traditional german swiss meal: bacon, beef, egg, shredded potato, cheese onions and pickels all cooked in one cast iron skillet. Quite good, but really greasy. Saw 3 street performers playing with fire, and ate a great apricot studdel. I slept in a nice clean hostel, woke up early to take the train to geneva, then a TGV to Paris Gare de Lyon, then an RER to another RER (its like the PATH train) to the airport to fly to liverpool....... read more

That was todays matra from hiking. Wasnt i supposed to be hanging off a glacier? yes, but due to circumstances beyond my control, i will have to wait until tomorow. After that i walked to the train station one past interlaken to take the train up to Lennerbrennan, the hub for mountian expolring, just to find that it "wasnt running". It wasnt running because it is a single track just past that point, and the down hill driver ran a red signal, and slowed down, but the other driver, could slow down in time and they crashed (i found all this out later from a guy who was on the downhill train). This is creadibly uncommon. In this whole waiting and trying to figure out what to do, i met two other Americans, from Jersy city, ... read more

So here i am in Interlaken. Interlaken is, as the name describes, between two lakes. It reminds me of the South Island of New Zealand. Combining the beauty here with the an intense (since 8th grade= desire to Hangglide, finally caused me to pay, and go. WOW: I am so glad i went the take off rocked. I ran alongside the instructor and all of the sudden the ground was gone. Neil was amazed at how calm i was, its not like jumping out of an airplane, so he cirlcled us near a cliff, and lots of other huge swoops. At somepoints we were going UP. That things moves, it is a giantic wing and all. Landing on my stomache was strange, but cool. All and all it was great. Went swimming in one of the ... read more

Thursday, July 31, 2003 - Interlaken, Switzerland Switzerland is a beautiful place. Everybody knows that, but seeing it first hand is a completely different experience. We started our Switzerland adventure in Interlaken, which suggested by its name, is located in the Alps region between two lakes. Arriving in Interlaken Ost station from Milano Centrale, Italy, we experienced a shocking atmosphere change from chaotic streets of Rome to calming Interlaken, with serene lakes of the Alps as a background. We had to reset our mindset from a go-go-go-I’m-so-behind into the oh-I-am-so-enjoying-life attitude. Tonight is chilly, according to our standard, which is micro-defined after living in hot and humid Roman summer for the past three months. The distance view of the snow-capped tallest peak in the continental Europe of Jungfraujoch, blended nicely with the lakes... read more

switzerland was beautiful. a picture perfect sight every time you turned your head. there wasn't a ton of ancient things to see (as opposed to rome), but we did see the most beautiful church in europe (in A & T's opinion). It was the first Jesuit church in Switzerland (go Jesuits!) and it was not as 'grand' as the churches we saw in Italy. It had an altar (picture coming soon) that was made of pink and rose marble accented with gold. It was amazing. Check it out if you have time: Jesuit Lucerne we also went shopping and found a quaint little "Mutter und Vater Geschäft" ("Mom and Pop Shop"... damn I'm so cultured) that sold everything from chocolates to watches to swiss army knives. i noticed that the prices were a little high. i ... read more
