After switching to the NATO Infrastructure Committee which met on Tuesdays from the P&P Committee that met on Thursday, my Easter vacations could start on Wednesdays instead of Fridays. We always looked forward to vacations in the Spring as the long cold winter was over and the flowers were blooming and the sheep were lambing...life was once more upon us and we had to get out and enjoy it. This was especially relevant as Linda was now four months pregnant with new life within her. This time we headed south to the Alps and on to Northern Italy, Tuscany and the Ligurian Sea. 26 April 1989 Wednesday. We drove from our home in Overijse, Belgium to one of our favorite places in Switzerland, the small village of Steckelberg, at the end of the Lauterbrunnen Valley south ... read more

My sister Sue, my nephew Brendan and niece Alyssa, and her mother-in-law Vovo came for a visit in the Spring following our move to Brussels. After a few days with us visiting sights in Brussels, we decided to drive through France to Switzerland and back through Germany and Luxembourg. We took my youngest sister Carol as far as Paris. Linda decided to stay home, as there wasn’t room in the car. Upon our return from Switzerland, Linda had some great news for us. After digesting the news we visited Brugges, Belgium, and Keukenhof, Marken and Volendam, the Open Air Museum and Madurodam in Holland. Linda joined us for this later portion of our vacation. 16 May 1985 Thursday. Carol joined us for the drive to Paris where we dropped her off with friends. She joined us ... read more

During our four years in Boblingen, we took weekend trips to the following destinations: for two day weekends we traveled Bavaria, including Rothenberg, Munich, and Oberammergau; to the Bernese Oberland section of the Swiss Alps; and for three day holiday weekends it was by overnight train to Antibes, on the French Riviera. This entry describes our trips to Switzerland. As they could occur on any weekend, they were usually spur of the moment decisions depending on the weather. If we woke up on a Saturday morning, and the sun was shining and we had nothing else planned, we would hop in our car and drive south via the autobahn passing Singen, Zurich, and Lucern and arrive at our destination of Steckelburg, a small village at the end of the Lauterbrunnen valley south of Interlaken (also the ... read more

For Thanksgiving 1980 we joined several from my previous office in Ramstein on a ski trip to Wengen, Switzeralnd. We took along a turkey and fixings which Linda and another wife cooked as they were not skiers. We took the cog railway to Kleine Scheidegg and from there chairlifts to the entire mountain. The weather and snow conditions were perfect. I remember riding the chairlift with the air sparkling with ice crystals and the snow so deep it covered almost to the top of the smaller pine trees. The sky was cobalt blue and all the mountains were spread out before me. I was in awe of God’s creation. I tacked the beginner and intermediate trains, and then gained enough confidence to take on powder. What a terrific sensation of floating across the deep snow! In ... read more

In early May 1978 my Mom flew from Thailand to be with us for several weeks. I took her and Linda on a business trip to Jever Air Base, a German base in northern Germany that the USAF would use in wartime. We stayed and ate a small gasthaus. While eating, the landlord’s teenage kids, Jenny and Jurgen, noticed we spoke English. Soon we were helping them do their English homework. The next day while I was at the German air base, they took my Mom and Linda on a tour of the town. It was freezing cold and they insisted everyone have ice cream. In German the J is pronounced as a Y, so we will always remember the kindness of Yenny and Yurgen from Yever. After my meetings, we drove back to Ramstein via ... read more

We were across the West German border by 10am and it was a good road through some pretty flat Swiss countryside, so with the van now performing a little better again, we reached Zurich by midday. By then, it was a real scorcher so after lunch, we spent most of the afternoon swimming and sunning on the north side of the lake with the swans. After a makeshift dinner, we returned to town for a stroll around the main part of the old section, including the three churches, Grossmunster (Large Cathedral), Fraumunster (Church of our Lady) and St Peters. We took in a couple of beers at one of the taverns then walked along the River Limmat back to the van. Finally, we drove out of town for about 30 minutes and stopped for the night ... read more

We caught the train from Paris to Lucerne in Switzerland, via Basel. We then climbed aboard a ferry across Lake Lucerne to the small village of Vitznau, where we stayed for about a week at the Vitznauerhof Hotel on the waterfront. The hotel is still there, and Issy and I visited it when we stayed in Lucerne in 2017. My favourite memory of the original trip is catching a very small fish from the hotel's jetty, and Dad then getting the hotel staff to cook it up and serve it to us for dinner in the dining room. I insisted that we reenact the fishing part of the scene on a very cold and wet day in 2017, using a stick as a rod. I'm not sure where the rod in the original scene came from. ... read more
