Lucerne--October 12 The overcast skies that greeting us this morning in Zurich followed us to Lucerne, where overcast thickened into stubborn fog during our days here. Lucerne's vibrancy was muted by the dreary weather and the gray light, but not to be daunted, we wandered along the Reuss River and through the pedestrian-only old town and enjoyed her charms... ... read more

We headed down to the pub last night to watch football and grab some dinner around 7PM. We started talking to another couple who were from Toronto and were also traveling through Europe. It was really nice to relax and talk with other people. We left around midnight. It was pouring rain with a lot of lightening when we walked out of the pub. Headed back to room took ½ an Ambien. Chris killed 4 decent size spiders before we climbed into bed. Hmm… maybe if we complain we can get a little of the extra $70 back we had to dish out?? Yeah, no such luck. We got up around 8AM the next morning and went down to the free breakfast. It was good - breads, cheese, hard-boiled eggs, cereal, etc. We headed out (still ... read more

We got a good night sleep last night (except for the alarm clock that went off at 4:50 AM that was set on the IPAD lol). We grabbed a croissant at the COOP (small market and much cheaper than bakeries) and headed to the train station. The train ride from Interlaken to Lucerne is suppose to be one of the prettiest train rides in Europe - it did not disappoint. We sat in the “Golden Pass Panoramic Car” - a must if you do this train ride! We both thought this was probably one of the most beautiful areas we have ever been to. The greens are amazing with the blue/green water. Random cows (with their bells on ) and sheep roaming about and huge waterfalls in the distance. Absolutely stunning!! There is no way the ... read more

In Luzern, Switzerland, I stayed with a girl called Sarah. She is a student, but on holidays, is really good at singing and playing guitar, and has excellent music taste! She met me at the station with her friend Martina, and we went to her house on the bus. That evening we made some samosas together, which were yummy! And then we went out for a drink. Luzern is a bit strange because during summer break all the bars close, so it took us a while to find somewhere that was open! We had a drink in an Irish bar, sat outside by the river with the cute wooden roofed bridge going across. Then we found another bar and stayed there a while, before Martina had to get the last train home. Next day we ... read more

After a long drive from Venice to Lucerne we went straight to a traditional Swiss village where we were picked up by horse and carriage and served home made products at a local farmhouse owned by Hans. We enjoyed Cheese, wine, pastries, bread, schnapps & coffee. Who would have thought that Switzerland would become one of our favourite places on our holiday. The next day we visited the monument of Switerland and the story touched everyone that there was not a dry eye in the group. Our tour guide is so passionate about every place we visit. We then went up by cable train & gondola to the top of the Stanzerhorn Mountain where we had views all the way to Germany. Carie and I stood on top of the mountain and sang the song from ... read more

Arrived in Lucerne after a beautiful train trip from Milan, through the Italian and Swiss countryside. Day 1- Lucerne is an amazing gorgeous little town, scenes of postcards. An overcast day but walked my feet off and saw the Kappelbrucke, Lion monument, Old Town, the shops and the lake and river. Day 2- woke up to pouring rain and had a trip to Mt Pilatus booked, waited around in morning and it cleared up a little. At lunch time caught the 90 minute ferry from Lucerne to Apnalcoch, then caught the world's steepest Cog railway up to the top of Mt Pilatus which was 2132m high. Beautiful views on the way up however it was very foggy right at the top. Spent some time walking and climbing up and down steps. Very enjoyable. Then caught the ... read more

July 5th.... Well, another "hot" tour day on the Trafalgar Tours coach. We left Karlsruhle this morning and made the trip through the Black Forrest of Germany. Incredible scenery! We entered Switzerland and stopped for lunch at a lovely Waterfall called Rhienfalls. Much like Niagara but without the commercialism (or at least the same degree) which made it very special. After lunch we headed for Lucerene Switzerland. We travel through Zurich - It seemed really strange to be in Zurich where our good freinds Nancy and Domi live, except, they aren't here - they are at their summer home in Pembroke! Strange indeed. We did however start to get a sense of why Nancy has come to love Swiss life so much (I mean aside from Domi!!)! After some time in downtown Lucerene we went on ... read more

Unfortunately the rain followed us to Lucerne but after we checked into the hostel (can’t afford anything else in Switzerland!) we found a dry spot to watch Aus V Ghana in the world cup. It was a nail biter of a game and we were happy with the draw. It probably would have been a different result if Kewell wasn’t sent off. Oh well.... by the time the game was over it was dry enough to go exploring. Lucerne is really stunning with it’s beautiful lake, medieval buildings and ramparts and the famous Chapel Bridge, water tower and needle dam on the river. There are pretty gruesome (but cool!) “dance of death” paintings from the 17th Century along the Chapel Bridge. We walked along the old city walls and once we were up high we caught ... read more
