Switzerland & Lucerne 26th September : We just made the train in Paris and were a bit stressed. The train seems to understand, because it whisks us at 320kph (indicated speed on the electronic panel) to Basel in complete comfort and de-stresses us. Make the change at Basel for a local Swiss train to Lucerne no problem, but cannot find the right carriage number; this doesn’t matter. The countryside from the train does not look that “Swiss” initially; urban areas, industrial back-yards and even graffiti. This changes as we leave the outskirts of Basel. Rolling green countryside becomes more picturesque and mountainous. Cattle grazing b... read more

Acabado o tour, uma ... read more

We 4 got the bus to Vitznau at 9.09am and the boat from there to the Lido boat station where we visited the Transport Museum to watch a 3D film on IMAX at the facility. There are a range of 3D films to watch but we had to take what was available at the time we were there. We opted not to visit the museum which is a large interactive facility but we had visited it a few years before with Marianne and Fritz. The 3D file was on the Flight of the Butterflies. It covered the story of a scientist from Toronto who traced the lives of Monarch Butterflies from Texas, north to Canada and then their flight path south. They have 3 generations before migrating south, but where did they go to? They were ... read more

The journey from Lake Garda through Switzerland to Luzern was pretty eventful for Suzy and us her crew. We followed the A2 most of the way. A busy road with traffic heading to and from Italy. The weather was particularly miserable, steady rain, dull dirty looking clouds and snow on the higher peaks. We are always despondent when the weather turns this way and more so when we know we are heading home to what sounded like a rainy, wet and miserable UK. I took my eyes of the motorway for a moment and when I looked back I saw a car out of the corner of my eye careering down the opposite carriageway on its roof. Its four wheels could just be seen above the crash barriers. It was hard to tell at what speed ... read more

For our third day in Switzerland we decided to head an hour or so west to the canton of Luzern in central Switzerland. The capital city, also named Luzern, sits on Lake...you guessed it...Luzern! A very historic and picturesque city nestled within the Alps, it seemed like a no-brainer to pay the 50 buck round-trip train ticket and see it for ourselves. The train ride was very quick, maybe 45 minutes - transportation in and around Zurich has been extremely easy and efficient, a nice change from Malta, and Boston for that matter. The forecast had said rain rain rain (we even contemplated popping over to Liechtenstein instead, but it was the same) but luckily it was nothing more than snow flurries on and off. From the train station it took some 30 seconds to reach ... read more

I have difficulty rolling myself out of bed. I’m in a study/guest room belonging to one of my best friends, Kristy, and her Swiss fiancée, Stefan. It’s below freezing outside and there’s still snow stolidly lingering from last week’s snowfall. And here I have a down comforter and a heater all to myself. But there is no rest for the wicked. I’m here for only a few days, a stopover before my Israel adventure. This leg is not a sightseeing venture but a glimpse into Kristy’s new life in this far-away land. Far from her native sunny California. We’re off to Lucerne today, an hour and some south of Winterthur where Kristy and Stefan live. Switzerland is a tiny country but still, a two-and-half roundtrip journey is nothing to sneeze at. Especially for a pregnant lady ... read more

This update was written as we headed from Lucerne to Paris on Monday 15th October. We arrived in Paris on Monday afternoon and spent yesterday afternoon evening at the Eifel Tower and today at the Palace of Versailles. As I finally have a decent internet connection, tonight I have uploaded some photos from our stop in Venice, if you go back to that entry hopefully you should be able to see them. Monday 15th October 10:40 am We are now on the fast TGV train from Basel Switzerland to Paris. The trip should take about 3:00 hours. The last 2 and a ½ days in Lucerne, Switzerland have been very nice, although eating out was unbelievably expensive, fortunately the apartment at the Bed and Breakfast we stayed at had our own kitchen so 2 of ... read more

Update from First Train... Today we have caught another Trenitalia train for the first leg of our trip to Lucerne (Switzerland) this train travelling even faster than the last (3ookmh) There were thunderstorms as we left Rome at 7:00am, and Im updating this whilst on the train and so far the it has been overcast the entire trip. We are about 40 minutes out of Milan where we have a 1 hour stop over prior to catching a train to Arth Gold-au and then changing trains again to get to Lucerne. Tanya is sound asleep and the girls have been updating their journals and John has been climbing the seats, (well not exactly) Im hoping he will sleep on the second train, its either that or one of us might be walking to Lucerne. Our visit ... read more

Happy Birthday to me. I woke up to sunshine and clear blue skies. We had breakfast at our Bachman's stand along with Lake. Then we walked towards the Kapellbrucke. We decided to walk the wall of the City of Luzern today, so we headed towards that. Along the way, because it was hard not to, we window shopped. The shops are opened later today (Thursday), so we kept our eyes open to see what shops we'll head back to after our touring. After walking along the wall, we headed to the Bourbaki Panorama. The Bourbaki Panorama dates back to 1881 and is only one of the few remaining original circular paintings that have survived. It's displayed in 3-D panorama and depicts General Bourbaki rescuing the French in the harsh winter of 1871. About 87,000 soldiers were ... read more

We left the mountains today and good timing. It was cloudy and wet. We reached Lucerne via Murren-Lauterbrunnen-Interlaken Ost and finally Luzern. The train trip took about 2 hours. We arrived at the Luzern Bahnhof and called Art Deco Hotel Montana to pick us up. The lady at the TI station said have a good stay. Enjoy, your hotel is nice. Something to look forward to. The Porter picked us up and took us up the hill to the Art Deco. It's very nice and very boutiquey. We checked into our rooms and the views are amazing. We have a balcony outside of our room and we get a very nice view of Lake Luzern. We also have our very own funicular to bring us to the bottom of the hill and into town. Very cool... ... read more
