The old bridge over Ruess River
Walking across the 1408 bridge with it's macabre (Dance of Death) paintings in the roof We 4 got the bus to Vitznau at 9.09am and the boat from there to the Lido boat station where we visited the Transport Museum to watch a 3D film on IMAX at the facility. There are a range of 3D films to watch but we had to take what was available at the time we were there. We opted not to visit the museum which is a large interactive facility but we had visited it a few years before with Marianne and Fritz. The 3D file was on the Flight of the Butterflies. It covered the story of a scientist from Toronto who traced the lives of Monarch Butterflies from Texas, north to Canada and then their flight path south. They have 3 generations before migrating south, but where did they go to? They were eventually traced into Mexico by accident rather than design where they were found layer upon layer hanging in trees in an environment perfect for breeding. It may sound uninspiring, but the filming and finding yourself immersed into their flights was amazing. We learned a lot about Monarchs that we had not previously known and there is a lot we can do to help butterflies by
River view and old bridge
The towers in the city walls can be seen in the background planting flowers and not wiping out their environments. I wonder what happens to Monarchs in New Zealand?
We then walked along the beautiful promenade and had some yummy filled and toasted baguettes followed by an apple pie. Then on to view the old city of Lucern.
Firstly we visited the Gletscher Garden where the statue of the weeping lion is carved out of the cliff face. The lion commemorates the lives of the many Swiss mercenary soldiers who have fought for other countries over the centuries.
We then headed uphill to walk the old city wall with it’s five different towers built into it. We were able to walk along a section of it and go up into the towers looking out over the city. The rest we were able to walk along the road level on down to the river where the two famous covered bridges are. One has paintings of various scenes of death and the other has a tower and flowers planted along both sides. It is all very attractive and no doubt seen by millions over the years as a tourist scene.
We did what all tourists do, and sat outside to
have a cuppa and watch the people traffic passing by. It’s always a good pass time. There were noticeably a few less fat people than we had seen in Austria.
After seeing everything we wanted to see, we got the boat back down the lake to Gersau. However, this time it was criss-crossing backwards and forwards across the lake and it took two hours to get home. But the weather has finally come right, the mountains have poked their heads out and the lake was flat so the trip was scenic and enjoyable. Maybe tomorrow we can plan a high level trip.
Mrs Oink followed dinner by eating a large number of chocolate bananas!
