Cow and bell
This cow with it's large bell seemed to be leader of the pack. The herd was high up in the mountains on the winter ski fields. The day was looking good enough for a hiking trip with the mountains clear but hazy. The forecast was for clouds and maybe some light showers so off we went with our packed lunch, jackets and umbrellas (since the wind is virtually zero).
We got the boat from Gersau across the lake to Beckenreid and then the cable car up to Klewenalp at 1600m where we had a coffee while we waited for the light shower to finish. We managed to make a mess there trying to figure out the machine J. We had had a car full of little kids of 5 to 7 years who were on an outdoor trip and sang a lovely song while we travelled and they headed off where we should have gone. We had been told not to take a particular path so we didn’t and set off following the signs to Stockhutte. We seemed to be almost back where we started when we ran into the kids with their outdoor fire already burning! Hmmm. Never mind, it was pleasant enough and we were soon heading off down where we should be. I should mention here that it was damned cold and we
Waiting for a bus
Walking and waiting out of Emmeten for the bus to Seelisberg certainly could have done with warm jackets, gloves, hats, rain coats and over trou. Karilyn was certainly well clad and we were okay but it could have been better. My new boots stood up to the test though.
The hiking track took us through many winter ski runs, open pasture and wide paths to walk on. As usual all paths were well marked. It must be a real hub here in the winter given the skiing facilities in the area. However, today we saw hardly a soul. The mountain flowers are out everywhere and cows with bells are clanging around the mountains. All quite lovely apart from the cold.
On arriving at the Alp of Stockhutte we took the gondola down to Emmetten where we sat in the Post Bus shelter and had our sammies. We eventually found that what we thought was going to be the next bus wasn’t for another hour after that. What to do when waiting around? We figured we might as well keep walking for a while and catch up with the bus further along the road. We walked through some lovely small country lanes and tidy houses and farm buildings then back
again until the bus came and took us through to Seelisberg which is on a point of the lake near Rutli Meadows where the original Swiss Confederation document was signed by three farmers. This was the original Switzerland formed by three cantons and added to over the years. It is also Tell Country.
From Seelisberg we got a funicular down to Treib where we had the best hot chocolate in all of Switzerland in a very old house/restaurant painted with traditional yellow and black designs from this area. Treib is really not much more than the boat stop for this area and we got the next boat back to Gersau. The total cost for this round trip was SF33 (on the Half Fare Card) which is very good value.
On arriving back in Gersau, it was raining again and cold. It was a day of being mostly cold (8 degrees), sometimes a hint of sun, an absolutely no wind. The sun block was not required! We’re never quite sure what each day is going to dish up weather wise so it pays to be prepared for the lot. Despite that, it was an enjoyable day of lovely scenery, peace and tranquility.
