Superb day today. All to plan according to Bob's spreadsheet for our trip. One day to take in the special Pilatus mountain trip and to include a boat trip, train ride and cable car. Had been concerned last night about the weather as rain was forecast for later in the day and didn't want that slipping over into daytime today. Yes it rained and it was very cloudy when we got up, quite early, but absolutely dry again so we were hopeful the clouds would clear. First part of the trip was across Lake Lucerne by boat and the boat station was 5 minutes away, just past the lido. Nobody else waiting for our boat except a few sleepy swans and ducks. Arrived on time, to the minute, with Swiss precision and away we went across ... read more

Moved on to a another town, another campsite, only 15 miles or so round Lake Lucerne, to Lucerne itself. We were pitched up on our new campsite, Camping International Lido, by 10.30am. This is just across a quiet road from the lake with a rather lovely lido between us and the water. Campsite is expensive. a - because everything in Switzerland is and b - because this is a city campsite in a very desirable location and c - because it is not ACSI so no discount. It is however excellent, has everything we need including good sanitaires, a little cafe and of course the swimming opportunities offered at the lido. Nice level pitch, Kisbee positively leapt out of the garage and off we went to visit Lucerne town. Only 10 minutes round the lake and ... read more

... read more

I am going to say this very quietly for fear of tempting fate, but once again the promised storms didn't appear. Yes it was drizzling when we left the hotel, but that soon dried up. Climbing into the mountains of the Alsace was cool, sometimes misty, but always spectacular. It was the perfect practice grounds for the Alps to come. We retraced some of the routes from previous trips in the region and, I think, the better ones. With quite a long ride ahead we didn't have time to spend in some of the beauty spots and at the war memorial, which was a shame. The roads, towns and villages were however beautiful. I am not a religious person myself but I do appreciate a good church and in this part of Europe they know how ... read more

Il ... read more

I think Issy's cold's getting worse instead of better. I tell her that she should stay in bed, but she says it was boring lying around in the apartment yesterday, so we set off together. We've decided to catch a train up the Rigi, which a 1,700 metre high mountain on the north side of Lake Lucerne. It's overcast, and has started to rain. The first leg of the trip is via a 90 year old paddle steamer, with a viewing platform inside the cabin down into the engines. I can't find Issy. We've only got second class tickets, and she doesn't seem to anywhere on the second class deck. I start to panic; surely someone would have noticed if she'd fallen overboard. I start to wonder if she might have inadvertently wandered up into the ... read more

Issy's got a cold, which really sucks for her, so she says that I should go out on my own while she rests up. I go wandering across the Chapel Bridge. First stop is the very prominent riverfront Lucerne Jesuit Church with its two characteristic large towers. I read that it's the first large baroque church that was built north of the Alps in Switzerland (silly me thought we were IN the Alps), and its construction began in 1667. There are bike racks all along the riverbank, and not nearly enough room in them for everyone who wants to park there. The number of two wheelers here suggests that everyone in Lucerne must own at least two of them. A lot of them aren't locked; they've just been left leaning against the racks. The Swiss must ... read more

We sleep in. Issy decides to pass on breakfast so I go down alone. The lady in the breakfast room asks me if I want a table for only one, with a lot of stress on the word "only". I can feel the eyes of the room boring into me. I'm not sure why; when I look around I see that I'm the only person here. We decide to take a tour on the small bus/train that we've seen carting tourists around the town. It's quite mild today, but the skies look a bit threatening, thunderstorms are forecast and the mountains are heavily shrouded in cloud. The train heads through the old town and then past the old city walls with their nine towers dating back to 1386. There's a large clock in one of the ... read more

There are bottles of champagne on the breakfast bar again this morning, and a group of Americans at the next table is getting stuck into them. It seems that one of the couples is having an anniversary. I hope that they're not planning on abseiling down any mountains today. Today we've booked a "Golden Ticket" round trip up Mount Pilatus. I booked this a long time ago, so we're not exactly sure what it involves. The voucher isn't giving too much away, other than a requirement that we take our passports with us. This is a bit worrying. The mountain only looks to be a few kilometres away, and I’m pretty sure we should only need passports if we’re planning on leaving Europe. I hope we get back to Lucerne in time for dinner. We've got ... read more

I wake up in a cold sweat. It's 7am and I don't know if I'm allowed to stand up to go to the toilet yet. I've read a lot of articles telling me that this is strictly verboten after 10pm, but nothing about when this "curfew" finishes. I decide not to risk it and sit down. We head down to breakfast. There's an open bottle of champagne on the breakfast bar. I wonder if many of their guests guzzle down a few glasses of bubbly for breakfast. There don't seem to be a lot of university students staying here. It's overcast and cool. We wander across the Reuss River on one footbridge and then back again across the Chapel Bridge, which is over 200 metres long and crosses the river at an angle. It was built ... read more
