I am becoming very good at coming up with stuff on the fly, and finding interesting things to do with my time. Like yesterday for example... I was going off the suggestion from a German in Norway about what to do in Sweden! Mirjam stressed that I HAD to check out the southern archipelago off the coast of Gothenburg; so I did. I took a tram to the ferry terminal on the edge of town, and spoke with a very helpful lady at the ticket office who set me up with the perfect pass for me and pointed me in the right direction to the island that I should visit, if not any others; and she was absolutely right! I found myself aboard a ferry making all island stops to the most southern island of the ... read more

I'm up at 3:30 Thursday morning in order to grab a taxi to the train station where I grab a bus to the airport to grab a plane back to Sweden.... Boy that sounds like a long day and when I arrive, because of the time difference and the length of the flight, it's actually before I left! In fact I'm almost ever back to the Central Station in Stockholm before I left! I was lucky enough to realize a few days before, that my eurail pass includes the Arlanda Express train. This is a direct train from the airport to the train station in about 20 minutes, maxing out at 205km/h, at least that's what it reached today. I wrote yesterday's blog in the station waiting for my connecting train to Gothenburg (in Swedish: Göteborg, ... read more

Geo: 57.6954, 11.9218Gothenburg is the second largest city in Sweden (about 500,000) and is a major trading center as well as home to Volvo, Erickson, Stenna, and many other industries. Sweden has a history of trading dating back hundreds of years. It was also in the late 1800's and early 1900's the point of departure for many who emigrated to other countries. At the time there was a famine and a great deal of unemployment. This is the case for my grandparents. At one time it was also a ship-building centre but only one berth remains. We are staying in the Majorna district which was historically a low income district where many who worked in the port lived. It still appears to be lower income although many of the original buildings have been replaced. The Maritime Museum ... read more

Today we leave behind Norway and travel to Gothenburg, Sweden, the 2nd largest city in Sweden and the 5thlargest in the Nordic countries. We arrived in Gothenburg by noon which gave us the rest of the day to explore. Our tour guide, Birgitte, gave us some suggestions of things to do in the city and once our luggage arrived in our rooms, we were off. We only had a few hours as this was another 1 night stay and dinner was going to be at 7:00. There were Botanical Gardens, shopping centers, an amusement park, harbor cruise, a park, and Haga, an old town housing estate. We decided to forego the harbor cruise at least until later and walk through the park to Haga. Haga traces its origins back to the middle of the 17th Century ... read more

Geo: 57.6955, 11.922This morning was a pretty familiar process. Rise and shine early to catch an 8 am ferry only this time it was to Sweden. The boats are large and the North Sea crossing is 3 hours and 15 minutes. There are multiple decks with different kinds of food areas including a buffet. Liquor is served on board (too early in the morning) and there is also a Duty Free shop.As you enter Gothenburg by boat it is apparent that there are many islands and part of the city is actually what seems to be more of a peninsula. There are also canals around the old city which are part of the fortifications. The GPS took us right to the hotel without any problems. We were able to check in early and then walked into town. ... read more

So, today's chapter happens to focus on Western Sweden, and more specifically the city of Gothenburg, Sweden's second largest city, and home to a fair few vital reference points. The city's superlatives which the title refers too happen to be the fact that this is the location of Scandinavia's largest shopping mall (Nordstan), largest amusement park (Liseberg), and Sweden's largest student population. You are probably getting the message already that this is a city with a fair degree of youthful zest, and the wealth of attractions crammed herein warrant a purchase of a 'Gothenburg city card', which is a passport to a plethora of museums and tourist-oriented activities, not to mention a means of getting around endlessly by public transport within the ticket's valid time frame. On the public transport theme, trams here are... read more

Helsingborg-Goteborg, Sweden 3 June 2014 The ferry to Helsingborg in Sweden took only 20 minutes and cost about $80 from Helsinger in Denmark. We bought some duty-free gin and beer the ferry. We then headed north in Sweden on the motorway. We drove a further 400kms that day, driving through Halstad, Varberg and Goteborg. Goteborg is the 2nd biggest city in Sweden with about 1/2 million people. It is situated on Sweden's west coast at the outlet of the Göta river. With over 60,000 students Gothenburg University is the largest in Scandinavia. It was once the center of the Swedish ship-building industry, but with rising competition from foreign ship yards, many of the dry docks closed down during the late 20th century. Much of the inner harbor area has changed from industrial ship building to high ... read more
