The return to the beginning As you all know, when travelling the world it is easy to forget your own homeground and why you live there in the first place. I am not implying Stockholm to be the most beautiful place as such a place only exist in our own preferences. However, I think it would be nice for all my international friends, that I have met and shared great experiences with, to see some of Stockholm. I have made a new gallery for Sweden where I´ll update you with photos of here. I have also added some pictures to the other galleries as I have more time to do such stuff now. For me the secret to happiness has become to live, eat, meet, speak, think, love, and explore as if I am constantly travelling. ... read more

After arriving home late Tuesday night, we got up Wednesday and I headed into Stockholm to do some shopping. I came home and packed for our boat trip and we left early Thursday morning. The boat is a good size for 4 people... quite comfortable. We drove north in the archipelago, stopping at a small island to visit Ylva's cousin Göran Mårs. He is Arne's son (and incidentally Monika's step-brother)... his daughter Olivia (she's 12) is related to me the same way as Linn. They have a country house on the island (there are 20 houses) that you can only get to by boat. We had fika with them and explored around the island a bit. Göran, his wife Monika and Olivia were very nice... Our next stop was Ängsö, an island that is a national ... read more

I am exhausted. This has been quite the weekend. Friday Linn and I came home from work (it was her last day!), made/ate dinner and started getting dressed. We went over to her friend Therese's apartment around 10:00 and Beata (a friend from work) arrived soon after. The last person to join us was Petter, and he came around 10:30... We sat around chatting for awhile and then took a cab downtown to a club called 'Berns' in the theatre district. You were supposed to be 23 to get in, but they didn't even ID me!! This place was pretty big...there was one big dance floor (complete with large chandeliers) that played mainly techno music, an upstairs VIP balcony (that we managed to get into by some miracle... actually I think it was thanks to Petter) ... read more

This past weekend we held a house party to celebrate Linn's birthday. There were 16 people who came for dinner and 7 who stayed overnight. Friday, Linn and I prepared by cleaning, grocery shopping and cooking. She made this fabulous bread... (yes, I am planning to get the recipe). Saturday was again spent preparing... Imagine peeling, cooking, and chopping 5 kg of potatoes?! The guests arrived between 6:00 and 7:00... luckily the rain had stopped and we were able to eat outside. We served potato salad, tossed salad, bread, cheese (Greve... my favourite!!), and a meringue cake for dessert (everyone brought their own meat). It started getting chilly at around 10:00, so we moved inside... and stayed there until 3:00am when the last of us went to bed. All I'm going to say about the evening ... read more

I LOVE this city! 5th July After a dreadfully boring trainride, possibly six of the longest hours of my life, I arrived in Stockholm and immediately set about getting my bearings on how to get to my hostel which is located in an area known as Zinkensdamm. A quick metro check revealed that there is a stop within 1km of the hostel, brilliant. I grab a 10 stop ticket to see me through my stay here and then head down to catch the train. The metro stops in Stockholm are, as the Californians I have bumped into during my travels would say, hella nice! They are all sparklingly clean, and feature many murals and cool tiled patterns or decorations, with almost no signs of grafetti which is not the norm for subway stops in general. No ... read more

Another weekend where I was overcome by a wave of tradition. Tommy picked Linn and I up from work at 3:30 on Friday and we drove up to Leksand to meet Ylva (her and a few friends from the choir had rented a house for the week prior to the concert). We dropped Tommy off and then Linn and I headed to Mårsgården. Everything looked exactly as I remembered it... We ran into the usual problem of not knowing which house to go to (there are 24 buildings)... Finally after a few tries we located Kiki and Bengts house, only to discover that they weren't home. While we were pondering what to do, they arrived (had only been down swimming). We had a lovely dinner with them and they spoke mostly Swedish (and I understood!!). They're ... read more

Sorry about the last entry... I thought I'd posted it last Friday, but it turns out that I didn't.. oops! The Swedish people here at work like to discuss the differences in our languages... In our conversations, I've come across a few words that seem to be lacking in Canadian english (or at least as far as I can tell)... I've decided to incorporate them into my vocabulary: 1) spinky - they thought this was an english word! It means someone who is super thin. 2) tränningsvark - a single word to express the muscle pain you feel the day after exercising (when you're out of shape) - I told them we didn't have a word for this cuz us Canadians are all in excellent shape. (haha) 3) canon - said like canoon... means excellent or ... read more

Ah, the cool breeze that hit us when we got off the plane in Stockholm made us feel at home right away. All the coniferous trees, lakes and familiar wildflowers that we saw a few minutes later just confirmed our feeling that Canada was somewhere right around the corner. Not that any of us was really homesick, it was just that it felt so energizing to unexpectedly feel at home so quickly. Landed in Stockholm on June 22 via Frankfurt, Germany. The flight from Hong Kong was fine and the hop from Frankfurt was spartan but speedy. We were whisked away by our friends Roy and Suzanne Widjedal to their summer home on the Baltic Sea. After a great Swedish meal (the first of many) we toured the town of Trosa and the Waldorf school en ... read more

I guess everyone is out celebrating today... In honour of Canada Day, I made a strawberry cheesecake and brought it into work. So, know that a small group of Swedish people are also celebrating Canada Day! I just wanted to quickly sum up what I did this week (and basically post some pictures). Monday - after work, Linn and I went into the old town of Stockholm. Beautiful medieval architecture and narrow stone roads... Tuesday - Anders (Ylva's Dad) and his wife Eva came over for dinner. Really cool man... he told me some interesting stories about the family (apparently Uncle Eric has always been into fast cars!). Also watched this show on TV called 'Allsång på Skansen'... which is basically a big sing-a-long... Thousands of people go to a park and sing-a-long to old songs ... read more
