So, I'm perusing wikipedia.com, the free online encyclopedia trying to increase my vast amount of comletely trivial and useless knowledge. Since I'm in Stockholm, I figure I'll look up the various sights, like Gamla Stan (Old Town) and the Warship Vasa, trying to learn everything I can about the history of the place where I'll be spending the next four months. This brings me to the article on the Stockholm Metro System, or Stockholms Tunnelbana in Swedish. The system, affectionately known as "The T", is widespread and efficient, with three color coded lines and a hundred different stations, bringing you anywhere you'd possibly need to be in the Greater Stockholm area. I get to the bottom of the page, after reading about the different models of trains that the system has had since its completion in ... read more

As I head into my last weekend before the actual semester and its "classes" begin, things are slowing down. First off, the busy busy schedule that the Swedish Program has been keeping us to is complete; there'll be no more running around the city with 30 other Americans trying to find a particular restaurant or park bench where we're supposed to meet. I like this, as now if I want to go back to my apartment and say, "take a nap", or "write a new blog entry" or "not pay an exorbitant amount of Swedish taxes for one lousy beer", then I can do so. Of course this doesn't mean that I'll be spending the rest of the semester out here in Sundbyberg (pronounce Sundby-bare for those of you following at home); it just means that ... read more

Righto. After recommendation after recommendation, I've joined the overcrowded and largely irrelevant world of internet blogging. Of course, as I'm in the Kingdom of Sweden for the semester, I'll probably have a considerable amount of material to talk about, which differs somewhat from my usual routine. So sorry if I don't get around to posting my ideas about why "Airplane!" is an American cinema classic, but I've got bigger Swedish Fish to fry (or, at least, enjoy with an Ice Junkie at the Movies). The Story So Far: I'm currently enrolled at Stockholm University in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden. I'm particiating in "The Swedish Program" out of Hamilton College. This allows me to study at the University in English, while also taking a course in beginning Swedish at the same time. I've wanted to take ... read more

Jag studerar film och svenska i Stockholms Universitet. Jag kommer frön USA. Yeah yeah yeah, I’m learning Swedish. The lesson’s started Monday and the rest of the classes start in a week or something like that. I’m not sure. I’m definitely starting to feel at home here. The people on the group are fun and Stockholm is just amazing. I have finally figured out how to use public busses properly, and I love them. I have always enjoyed public transportation, but now I don’t know if I can go back to LA traffic and a car haha. Yeah, I know it’s been a week, I’ll change my mind soon enough. I also am starting to enjoy the cold weather and I have either been “climatized,” or it is getting warmer. I have been told it will ... read more

Stockholm is country number 78 on my list of countries visited. I arrived, got charged 20 euros for a 1/2 km taxi ride, bought a scarf, and left. It was -7 deg in Stockholm and I walked a long way after my taxi ride from the ferry cost me more than any taxi ride in my life. I was disappointed to be ripped off in Sweden. Christ, even in Tangiers you get some value for money, even when you're being ripped off. Anyway, I had arrived by ferry from Helsinki and I expect they can spot a bunch of tourists a mile away. So my recommendation for arrival in Stockholm by ferry - just wait for the bus. It's cheap and quick ...and the driver doesn't show off his driving skills on the snow and ice. ... read more

yes, i am a total loser who started this blog and then did nothing with it. However, its not my fault, i couldn't access the internet from my computer at kati's house and for some reason my usb drive didnt want to register between the computers (probably a problem between macs and pcs--who knows). Anyway, I am in Stockholm now. I managed to navigate myself to the hotel so that's good. I move in tomorrow at 8:30. My hotel is about a two minute drive from my flat, but I couldn't really see an easy (and walkable) way. Meaning I didn't really see a good side walk, so I'm probably getting a cab there (i am a horrible person). Oh well. I'm definately anxious and nervous as well as really excited. I have mixed feelings right ... read more

Just got back from having a coffee with a friend. He recommended my to open up a journal on the Web for my trip. I was not convinced. I don't exactly consider myself as a member of the "IT generation".. But look at me. Here I am just about to post my very first blog ever. Let's see if I can keep it up during my time in Chile and Southamerica.... read more

What life looks like from above? Better, faster, bigger, newer, nicer, more chic, more fashionable are just a few examples of words we like to attach to our material needs. And think about what the next generation will value if we continue this way! Christmas and all the commersial hype around it. Wouldn´t it be nice to skip it and just spend time with the family? Just being satisfied! Think about it. SATISFACTION. Satisfaction unrelated to material things. This is why I called this entry for "A bird´s perspective". Up there, you see clearly what is important in life. You see how small and insignificant most things - that are valued highly on the ground - really are. The only things that matters are the bonds you have to the people you know, care for and ... read more

Where: Silja Ship from Stockholm to Helsinki Temperature: -1C (to be honest this is a bit disappointing… BRING ON THE COLD) Wind: calm 7m/s out of the NNW Dew point: nice try… haven’t a clue I had a great time in Stockholm which is undoubtedly one of the more beautiful world capitals. I would almost venture to say that it is prettier than Vancouver… I know you’re all rolling your eyes at home but it’s true. The one advantage Vancouver has is the mountains but Stockholm has architecture (as you’ll see in the photos) which is stunning… so let’s call it a tie! Stockholm is also one of the most expensive places I have ever been. Their sales tax, are you ready for this?!, is a whopping 25%. Naturally the country is very socialist and manages ... read more

To spend some more time with Mum (including her birthday) Justin and I thought that it would be a good idea to follow Mum to Sweden, where she had an exhibition. We soon found out that Sweden was famous for a number of things including Volvos, ABBA, beautiful people (that was our own deduction) and the Nobel Prize. Saturday 12th November Justin and i flew to Stockholm in the early hours of Saturday morning (love those cheap ryan air flights). After staying the night in our budget hostel (with no toilet paper) we met Mum at the luxurious Radisson Hotel. We arrived bearing flowers and chocolate for her bithday. After stealing the tissues from her room (to replace our lack of toilet paper) we had the beautiful buffet breakfast in the Hotel. After telling the lovely ... read more
