Wow, has it been a while since I've written. In my defense, I wa sin Germany for a week and change to begin the month, and I've been keeping my thoughts recorded in my more conventional journal for the past few weeks. Still, from the expectant spark in your eye, I can see that you missed hanging on my every word. I'll try and update more regularly from now on. Anyway, yeah. Germany. I took German for two years at college, mainly because the bastards wouldn't let me take Swedish, so I sought out the language that was the closest. And in actually going to Germany, I was plesantly surprised that my German still functioned, more or less. I wasn't able to disguise the fact that I was an American, but I found that Germans were ... read more

Yeah? Well my wallet was stolen. As I am sure most of those reading this know. Still no sign of it, but oh well, i have my wallet and food subsidy. However, today the front page headline was thieves/pick pockets at T-Centralen and Slussen. Yeah T-centralen is where it was stolen and slussen is the train station i HAVE to take. Needless to say I check my back much more often (about every ten minutes) now. Going to estonia, am only taking my little camera after this event I'm a bit to paranoid to take it on the boat (although I should be fine), but I will update with pictures of it on sunday. Here's a little treat for everyone now! A swedish folk song! I'll translate it in the next post to see if anyone ... read more

I debated titling this entry after the movie I just spent my night watching (apart from the Russia-Slovakia hockey game), but I decided that such a move would be dangerously close to taking my blog in a direction I didn't want it to go, so I figured that I should keep it simple instead. And for those of you scoring at home, that sentence was easily two lines too long. Anyway, after a good Wednesday, I'm feeling much much better about my classes, my birthday, and the outlook of the semester in general. The upswing out of the first valley of the W came yesterday evening, when I went along with the rest of my program to a welcome dinner for international students held by the city of Stockholm. The reception was held at the City ... read more

I thought that when I got here, I might be able to fight off an anxiety and culture shock/homesickness attack if I stayed positive and had a little luck. As it turns out, they tell you that your euphoria upon arriving in a new country won't last because it *won't* last. I'm sitting here, with a lot on my plate and many things to look forward to, but instead I feel miserable. It wasn't even that I spent my 21st birthday in a country where it didn't mean anything, or that I had my digital camera stolen while out celebration said birthday. No one thing has really caused me to feel like this, as always, it's the combinations of the little things. Last Wednesday, I accidentally locked my clothes in the laundry room and thought I ... read more

so it's been a little while, but i've been having mycet kul. Let's see, like i said i went to the reggae festival it was fun. went exploring around the edge of central stockholm and gamla stan. Went to the dance museum. Been going to class. Been cross country skiing twice. For my mother to prove I do know swedish Jag åkt skidor med min contakt familj igår. (i went skiing with my contact family yesterday). It's so much fun, but I did jack of my shoulder pretty bad and now it's in contanst pain. Apparently i have been whailing in my sleep too--which is odd. I've been known to sometimes mumble or snore, but whailing? What is up with that? Saturday, I went to the dance museum as I said. I watched a tango lesson, ... read more

The weekend was a busy one, and after a week of classes I think i might actually have enough new material to comment on for an entire entry. My classes are mostly interesting, though as my college experience has been one on a residential campus up until now, it's a strange feeling to me that my travel time to the University every day almost always outweighs my actual class time once I'm there. Swedish class continues to be fun for the most part, and we're getting into more detailed stuff so that I feel that I'm learning phrases and whatnot that will acutally help me out there in the world. We learned Direct Object Pronouns today, and while that may not seem like an exciting time to you, I'm quite relieved that I'm able to string ... read more

My iPod arrived today, so let's start with that. For the last week or so, I've been wondering exactly which kind of iPod would be meeting me in the mail, as I got a Fourth Generation iPod last February, *right* before they introduced an all color iPod that played videos. I didn't know whether they still made my version, so maybe, just maybe, I would get an iPod that was much, much better than the one that crapped out on me the afternoon before I left North America. As it turns out, they sent me the same model that I had. Makes sense, and I'm not disappointed or anything; it's shiny and new and it works. I have my music back in portable form for the first time in a while, and for the first time ... read more

I had my first real sizeable attack of frustration today; partly at myself, and partly at the world around me. The day began rather well, as I receieved a text message from the Swedish Program director informing me that my first class of the day had been cancelled. After sleeping in for an extra hour and a half, I woke up and ate the prepared lunch that I had been saving for the several hours of dead time I had in between my two classes. I left my apartment at 3:00 for a 4:30 class at the University, which, as you know, is about 45 minutes earlier than I needed to leave. The fact that my roommmates were both out may have contributed to my boredom, but also I was late for my first class of ... read more

So, I was writing along with this entry, and I accidentally erased everything I'd been writing for about 20 minutes. Damn. I'll try my best to replicate the amazingly entertaining prose which I had put down, but I'm not promising anything. The weekend is over, and I'm diving into my first week of full classes here at the University of Stockholm. Though I can here you cry "But Matt! You've only had Swedish lessons so far this week! How can you write about anything new?" Touche, but I can still write about what I did this weekend, can I not? Anyway, I didn't end up going to the bar made entirely out of ice. My lack of attendance was equal parts apathy, laziness, and me being too cool for school, but apparently it was a good ... read more

that's from my roommate here. Ok, so cooking=not too shabby. Managed to whip up a tortellini and red wine sauteed vegetable dish tonight. but that's not the point, but it is where the quote comes from. Tonight was the swedish Regae festival. It ends monday night, and man was it fun. I left a tad early, but I'm off to visit my contact family tomorrow and need to be mildly rested (yeah...im doing a great job at that). Anyway, pictures will come. Classes start Monday. I need to clean my room.... read more
