The Andalucian Experiment is coming to a close and I am pretty sure I was right all along. It wasn´t part of the plan to spend any time here, just zoom through on the way to North Africa. But wouldn´t that be a waste of an opportunity to travel around somewhere as rich as southern Spain. The first two months in East Africa, likewise the next three months in West Africa, have been pretty well researched. I have guidebooks that I virtually know by heart, read other books on the histories and politics, have looked at lots of websites and talked to people who have been themselves. I have done none of this for Spain because, as I said, it wasn´t part of the plan. I have met people that swear by travelling this way. I ... read more

Tired but stoked We got into Madrid at about 8pm on Wednesday 7th of March, caught the metro from the Airport which was pretty easy and found our hostel was a 2 minute walk from a metro station. So that was a good start! Got into Ole hostel and there was a guy at reception, Eriky, who showed us around the hostel and we managed to settle in pretty quickly. We were in need of some food so we asked where the supermarket was and he told Murphie, and at this point I had no idea how bad Murphie was at map reading or directions in general, but we started off thinking it was a 5 minute walk...an hour and a half later we had given up, cold and windy in Madrid so we started to ... read more

Europe » Spain » Canary Islands » Fuerteventura March 7th 2007

Denise had a 3 week break between leaving her old job and starting her new one, so we took the opportunity to head for the sun for a week. We found a cheap holiday in a self catering apartment in Fuerteventura, one of the Canary Islands, just off the coast of Morocco in Africa. The Canary Islands are actually Spanish, and made from volcanoes. The volcanoes came first and then, in the 1400's, the Spanish. As is the custom, the natives, called 'Guanches' were wiped out. Very little evidence is left of their existence. It is thought they came from North Africa and were polygamous with a difference, in that each woman had on average three husbands! Our apartment was in a British council estate with the addition of a swimming pool to give it that ... read more

Well, I certainly can't complain, as I lay here on a cushioned beach chair by the hotel pool. Barcelona is beautiful! We landed this morning, and I watched the landscape creep up, straining my already sore neck to look out the tiny plane window. I was surprised to see the difference in the terrain to the US - the clusters of houses and buildings that dotted the hills and mountains set a stark contrast to the congestion I just left. I watched the huge waves pound the coastline as we came into the airport, which was surrounded by farmland. Barcelona itself is surrounded by mountains, which restrict the access to the city. We disembarked and entered an almost silent international terminal. The excitement started early as two of our fellow passengers were arrested and handcuffed at ... read more

well I have just arrived in barcelona after a 6 hour train ride, which was more or less uneventful, not like the last one. But more on that later. this train ride was broken up into pieces of reading my cheezy John Grissam novel, which has made more than a couple of people mistake me for an American, listing to music and staring blankly and the spanish countryside as it rolled on by. My last couple of days in Madrid were fun. Met some cool people, and saw some more intresting sights, which included the armory of the royal palace, housing one of the largest and best preserved collections of ancient armour. And the massive park in the middle of madrid, which I wandered around for about 3 hours, doing my best to avoid the vangrents ... read more

Hola everyone! Sorry it´s been awhile. So... What has been happening for the last few days?... *wracks her brain* Ok so as I said before we are eating very well! We have 3 men that are very good cooks (one of them is my Derek of course!!). Vincent and I made an awesome cake a couple days ago. He is vegan so we couldn´t use eggs, but because he is a Spanish native he knew a really neat trick. In place of eggs your can use Aloe Vera (there are tons of 'em growing around here). Yes! You heard me right!! So he showed me how to take one leaf (if you will) from the plant without hurting or killing the rest. You then fillet it like a fish, so you only have the jelly inside. ... read more

This was the first trip I took to Europe as an adult, and my first trip for what would become my job by that November, so it's interesting to take a look back at my excitement, and the impressions I had. Enjoy! Here I am, ready to be off on my trip! I'm packed, checked in, and waiting in the airport lounge for my trip. We should land in Barcelona in just over ten hours - I'm tired just thinking about it! But I'm excited too. I love that the airport lounge has these huge glass windows where I can watch the planes land and take-off. They look so small in the sky, but they're so huge right out the window. It's amazing that they even make it off the ground at all! It's interesting too, ... read more
