This weekend five of my friends and I hopped on a bus to Cadiz, a city near the coast of southern Spain. The occasion was known as "Carnaval", a well-known city-wide party in which everyone wears disfraces (costumes). I knew that it would be crazy, but I had no idea exactly HOW crazy until we showed up to see about 12 buses (all from Granada) full of people in every single costume imaginable. I made a mental list of all of the most common costumes that I saw: 1.) Pirates 2.) Hippies 3.) Something religious (Eg. Nuns, popes, cardinals) 4.) Cross-dressers I dressed up as a cowgirl (vaquera), while Rachel went as Zorro, Tina as the Cowardly Lion, Sarah as super neon woman, and Matt and Mike did sort of a "build my costume as the ... read more

I love Spain and when I think of Spanish people, many fabulous qualities come to mind: they are warm, friendly, eager to help strangers, devoted to their families, jovial, easy-going...the list goes on and on. But one word would never appear on this list: ATHLETIC. So during a mid-day coffee break last week while my co-workers chatted amongst themselves about going hiking on the weekend, I listened and tried to imagine this crowd of coffee-drinking, churro-eating, middle-aged teachers on a mountain. Ha. Not going to happen, I thought to myself. But then one of them turned to me and asked if I would like to join them for some hiking in Malaga on Sunday. Now, you must know that on this particular day I was trying to be more social than normal, and also, that I ... read more

18-19 February I took a few days off between Vipassana courses to go up the coast to Cadaques and Figueres, both long time haunts of Salvador Dalí. Cadaques is a beautiful little white-washed town right on the water. It was the middle of the week and very quiet - a perfect place to relax for a few days before starting to cook for 60 people again. It was wonderful to just walk through the narrow streets, along the water, and to the neighboring little town that had a small Dalí museum. On the way back I stopped in Figueres, which has the Teatro-Museo Dalí - a huge civic museum that burned down and was restored by Dalí in a surreal manner that only he was capable of. He has so many paintings, sculptures, furniture, and ... read more

Oh, 19th....duh. It says so in my little date thing at the bottom of my computer!! lol Anyway, some of you who are exceptionally good at math and reasoning skills might look at the time of this message than refer back to my school schedule. You than may notice the descrepancy in the fact that while I am posting this I should be in my Spanish Civilization and Culture class. Mom, I´m not skipping class! No, instead there is a teacher´s strike. Yes, the teachers here are on strike. Not all day long though, no, that would be depriving only the students apparantly and that was deemed bad. So, for two hours, convienently during my 10:00 and 5:00 classes the teachers are on strike. Apparantly when you teach in the Centro de Lenguas Modernas here you ... read more

4:30 - taxi - bus - plane - taxi - 11:30 Rome, sweet Rome. Another long day of traveling. But at least now were home. Well… relatively. It’s weird ending a trip, and not ending up at home. But this is our home now. It’s weird, but it felt right ending here. I got that - thank God I’m home feeling. As much as I loved Barcelona, don’t get me wrong, it was amazing - It feels good to get back to something I know. As soon as we got back, Tara and I had to go get our Permesso stuff taken care of. I’m officially legal to be in the country until May 12th. Then I have to leave - I think. Well, I am so it doesn’t matter… I’m quite tired, so I’m going ... read more

Again, considering we stayed out way too late Saturday night (or Sunday morning, as some may consider it) We slept until about 11:30 Sunday morning, But we got up and moving and went out to lunch as a different café nearby the hotel. Then we headed up to the Olympic Park. There’s a few different things up there - it’s all on the top of a hill, so there was a pretty good view as well. We had to ride the Funicular to get to the top - not quite as exciting as in Alaska, because it was underground, it was part of the metro system, but it was still fun. We got to the top, and started heading toward the Olympic park and there seemed to be tons of people around. When we got to ... read more

Friday morning we had our third group excursion, and this time we took a short bus ride to the pueblo of Gernika, the historical capital of Pais Vasco. Gernika is renowned in Spain because it was bombed by Hitler in the 1930s, who was working in cahoots with Franco at the time during the Spanish Civil War. There is a famous painting by Picasso called "Guernica" that now sits in the Reina Sofia museum in Madrid that many Basque people would like to see brought to a Guernika or Bilbao art museum, but because of its size and weight, many don't think it should be moved - it's a big controversy in Spain!. While in Gernika, we visited the Casa de Juntas, or the government house, and saw the famous Arbol de Gernika, the oak tree ... read more

The flight from Cairo departed a few hours late on Friday morning, however we managed to pick up some time on the way to spain. Touched down in Barcelona, where I farewelled Jan & Doug as they disembarked to contine the remainder of their honeymoon. After collecting more passengers & refuelling, we took off Madrid bound & arrived before daylight to a mere three degrees celcius weather outside. Unexpectedly, the airport was massive, there was an underground train to ferry passengers to another terminal where the luggage carousels were. I managed to change some travellers cheques & obtain a map of the underground system before collecting my backpack. The train station was at yet another terminal, so I boarded a bus & witnessed my first sunrise in Spain en route. Like London, Madrids underground system is ... read more
