The next day certainly began early - I was exhausted and not feeling at the top of my game, but I was up, wearing my suit and downstairs by eight. We prepared for the speakers and delegates to arrive, making some last minute adjustments and arrangments. The meetings that morning went well, albeit a little slowly. I think some of the speakers enjoyed listening to themselves talk! Afterwards, the delegates headed upstairs for lunch and I rounded up the companions who had taken a tour of the city that morning. We cleaned up the conference room, and I went to get a bite to eat, only to learn that half of the group was already talking about skipping the afternoon trip to the cava vineyards - including my dad. I agreed to go as our representatitve, ... read more

If there's one thing that I love most about Spain, it's the need the Spaniards feel to take a break from their already relaxing lives. If there's a holiday on Thursday, they take Friday off, too. The calendar is sprinkled with one holiday after another, so many that I feel like I've been off work more than I've been at work. Last week we celebrated White Week, a holiday I'm still struggling to understand. You see, all the towns in Andalucía have a local festival once a year to celebrate life according to local tradition. It's called a feria and always includes dancing, drinking, staying out all night and eating lots of local foods. And to ensure that one can take advantage of all the ferias in the region, the celebrations are spread through out the ... read more

Barcelona! Hahaha! I have finally made it to Europe. What a feeling it is, and what an awesome city to start the experience in. Barcelona, I must say, lives up to the hype and expectation plus some. I have now been in the city for 3 days now and have seen and experienced some pretty awesome sights and sounds. Friday 9th March I arrived at about 9am (via Frankfurt) with a fly by of the city and the coast courtesy of the pilot, something that everyone should see in the lives! It was an picture perfect view of Europe and Spain for the first time ever and something I won´t forget anytime soon. I was informed of the complexity of the rail and subway system here and they weren´t wrong. I met some nice english girls ... read more

After a whirlwind morning filled with more introductions, work, and breakfast, I situated myself by the pool. The heat of the sun beat down on me today, with no cool relief from the Mediterranean breeze. I hoped I wasn't getting further burnt under the cover of my 30SPF sunblock and worked on reading my book. Reading really transports me to whatever locale the novel is set in, but I would periodically be drawn back into the luxury of my own exotic Barcelona. I cooled off a few times by swimming laps in the pool, much to the schoolboy delight of the three English businessmen sitting at the far end of the pool, one of whom I believe nonchalantly snapped my picture with his digital camera. I grew tired of their giggles and climbed back out, only ... read more

Dinner was absolutely wonderful! We had quite an international contingent - we were American, English, German & Spanish, with some who had switched countries! Everyone was great - one of our dinner companions is a small man, dressed casually with a dedicated love of football (the European kind, mind you), while his wife was impeccably dressed (matching handbag and shoes), and an admitted shopping fanatic (though I don't know too many women who aren't!). She seemed to sense my nervousness and stood right next to me in a protective manner, which she kept up throughout the night, whenever she would inquire about what I had ordered, how I was enjoying it, or how I was generally doing. It was clear over the course of the evening that she and her husband were very well traveled, but ... read more

Hola all, So. Derek and I are trying to figure out where to go next. I know we´ve only been here a week but this isn´t really our farm. The other WWOOFers are grand. Except of course Alex, one of the German WWOOFers, I think he drives everyone a little bonkers. He says the same thing over and over around 5 different times, just in different ways. He likes to look over everything that someone does and tell them how to do it better or how we are doing it completely wrong. Or worse! He´ll go and do over what you just did. He also snores very loudly. He´s probably one of the only people in my life that I´ve actually seriously thought about telling off. ... Eeek. Then there´s Pere. He´s never around, despite the ... read more

Out by the pool: No, I'm not still out by the pool, nor have I been here all day. I began my morning with breakfast at just after eight in the hotel. We had juice, coffee, Belgian waffles, fruit and bacon. It was great. Afterwards, it was time to attend to some business. We trekked down to the business center, found at the bottom of an elegant staircase, carpeted in a plush brown shag. We discovered that they didn't have the capability to access documents on a USB device as we had hoped, so instead, my dad showed me where the conferences would be held - in a dark old ballroom-looking room, with oversized glass chandeliers, off a glassed-in hallway overlooking the pool fountains. After we took a look at the rooms, we headed back to ... read more

After chocolate in Brussles, Dionne and I headed south to meet up with fellow ISU Spanish major Kyle in Paris. We didn´t have the best of weather in Paris (it was quite windy the whole time and on and off rainy) but apparently the wind wasn´t nearly as bad as in central Europe: trees downed across rail lines, semis blown off highways, really crazy stuff. Had we planned on leaving Prague a bit later, we might not have been able to. We thought we´d take a quick look at the Louvre museum. This is impossible! We spent maybe 4 or 5 hours there and only made it through Italian Renaissance painting, Greek and Roman cermaics, a bit of classical sculpture and Mesopotamia. We went through most of Egypt on accident to get to Mesopatamia (we were ... read more
