We saw something cool today (as if that doesn't happen every day): there was dancing in the square in front of the main cathedral in Barcelona. There was a band there and they looked quasi-professional. They had cor anglais (I think; they were double-reeded) and some sort of mini-euphoniums. The dancers were older people, but they looked like they just came out for the fun of it. After it was all over (about half an hour), there was a procession involving two statues of Mary carried on platforms. One was on a cart pulled by two oxen (Sorry Dad, not Simmentals) and surrounded by pillars that were copies of the towers from the church that we saw on Friday. There was also a band that rode on horseback. I couldn't imagine keeping a horse under control ... read more

Barcelona Arriving in this city, which hosted the Olympics in 1992, John and I knew right away we would be back. Great care had been taken to make the port a welcoming sight, with its wide promenade, wisteria covered trellises, benches, bike paths, and unusual but interesting art pieces like the octopus coming out of a trellis and the famous . We found our way to the old city section and went into the Barcelona cathedral, which at the time we thought was Gaudi Cathedral. Upon returning home and looking in our guidebooks, we are definitely going to have to return to see it and Parc Guell. We did however walk the Paseo Gracia to see some of Gaudi architecture and strolled Las Ramblas, a plane tree lined street bustling with vendors, and street performers. The ... read more

We are tired so some point form notes: walked alot saw some pretty cathedrals one had a really cool court yard. Went to the beach, ate paella and sangria, saw sagredad familia church (the one by gaudi) that will never be done. Went to a pretty park with a waterfall, but there was no water in the waterfall. Having a hard time doing laundry, the nearest laundry mat is open from 11-2. Hopefully we will also get to Montjuic tommorow, a mountain in Barcelona. Also had fresh pears, oranges and tomatoes, yum. Not sunburnt, thank goodness but taned despite 60 sunscreen since walking is cheap so we do it alot about 5 hours a day, at least. Man we will be buff. Ciao Sarah and Alex... read more

Hi All, After an 6hr flight and 9 hour train ride, we are here. It was quite an adventure and really beautiful. It was like a moving painting. Unfortunatley our hostel will not allow us to do laundry in the bathroom. Well we are off to wander down to the medieval and gothic areas. Take care. Well I am officially back at Uni in England. Had a month off to do a little exploring and resting. I needed it and I am finally over the sickness that plagued me for so long! HAHA I beat you stomach acid thing! Anyway.. sorry it has been so long since I have written in here, but did not have a lot of access to a comp! Spain seems like a long long while ago... I will try to remember all the funnyness of the trip. It didnt start out too great because Amber and I woke up (on time or so we thought!) and started to get ready. We headed to the bus stop and once we got there we talked to some of her friends and realized the clocks had moved foward an hour!!!! ... read more

The weather was very warm today and the sky was very blue. We got up early and went to the train station and just barely made it onto the train to Figueres. We got there and walked around lost for awhile looking for the Dali Museum. We finally found it and it was a lot of fun. I am so happy I got to go -- I've been looking forward to it for months. There was a lot of his ink doodles/sketches that were impressive and his paintings looked fabulous in person. So rich and much better than prints :) It was cool that Dali designed this place while he was still alive (he's burried there now). I had a good time. We got back to Barcelona and to our hostal late, and took nice showers. ... read more

Back into France via the Camargue and Aigues Mortes. A chance to explore the area before continuing to Antribes and the French Riviera. Travel day today. For some reason Melissa and I decided to get up at 5.30 so we'd have time to have showers and repack before breakfast. Ended up being ready way too early, so we went for a walk to the beach to try catch the sunrise. I jumped the fence, which I later realised I wasn't supposed to do. The sand was freezing so the water was warm by comparison. Had Spanish omlette for breakfast and packed the coach, then headed off at about 8am. First service stop was at the same autogrill we stopped at on the way in. Drove past the Pyraneese, and had our lunch stop at a ... read more

Our tour of the city sights takes in Gaudi's Art Nouveau Cathedral, and the 1992 Olympic Games complex. Stroll along the Ramblas, shop for Lladro porcelin and Majorica pearls, eat tapas and check out a Flamenco evening. Nutella pancakes for breakfast! Had a driving tour of Barcelona, which is the capital of Catalonia, which is an area of Spain. Drove up Montjuic and saw the 1992 Olympic stadium. Saw the giant torch that they guys missed with the bow and arrow at the opening ceremony. Went to see Sagrada Familia, Gaudi's church he started building in 1882 which is still being built today. Went to a leather/porcelin/majorica pearl shop called Mestrepiel. Walked through the gothic quarter and saw the cathedral and Catalan Government building, and the steps where Columbus brought back food from the new ... read more

Today was really nice. The weather was gorgeous (and warm) and I just had a good time. We checked out of our lame hotel and took the Metro into the main area - Placa Catalunya/La Rambla. La Rambla is a BIG street, so we figured we could find something. We are staying off the main street in the Hostal Rembrant. It only costs 35 euro a night, and it's better than the last place -- we even have a small balcony! After dumping our stuff off we went and had lunch at Les Quinze Nites - a nice restaurant where we split Paella. It was really good. The Sangria we had was alright, but it hit me very quickly ;) Then we took the Metro up a bit and walked to Parc Guell. It was pretty ... read more

So we're finally here!! Our train got in at around 9:50 p.m. and we walked to the first hotel we saw (a one-star ghetto place that costs too much). I'm looking forward to laying down and letting my feet unswell. Tomorrow we're going to go into the main part of Barcelona and look for a better place to stay, as well as look around. The temperature is much warmer here - it's a nice change. ... read more
