Took the early train (8:30am) from San Sebastian to Avila. The train wasn´t as nice as the one from Barcelona... no tray table or reclining seats, but it still had movies and a cafeteria. Arrived in Avila about 1:30pm and decided to walk to the hostal in the old city, about a mile or so. Didn´t have much trouble finding the hostal, Hostal Bellas. The hostal is very nice, although again, no internet available. Just been remodeled and our room was pretty and spacious, with our own bathroom/shower, and twin beds ( :( ). Took a nice stroll in the afternoon along the top of the wall, with some beautiful views. The Avila was is the oldest complete wall in Spain and I think even Europe. We have to see it from outside at night when ... read more

Today we got to Segovia. I'm not sure how long it took because I slept the whole bus ride. Bebi mucho vino anoche y por lo tanto me duele la cabeza. I love my Senora. She is only 34 (so she says...hah) and has a daughter, Marid, who is 17 and a daughter Salome, who is 20 I thinkand studies in Madrid, so we haven't seen her yet. She won't let us speak English in the house, probably because shecan't speak it at all. Hah Segovia is beautiful. It reminds me of Sienna kind of, but smaller. Since I only have one class from 9-10:30, I'll have a lot of free time. I think tomorrow I might go to the pool. I wish I felt better because it's really hard to run when I feel so ... read more

May 26, 2006 - After a mad rush to the train station, I caught the overnight train from Porto to Madrid. The train ride was quite swank as the only space they had available was a private sleeper car in first class. Best 100 Euro sleep I've ever had (Please note: only 100 Euro sleep I've ever had lol). My arrival in Madrid was followed by a somewhat confusing half Spanish/half Portuguese conversation with a taxi driver in a mad rush to make it to the bus on time....where I waited, and waited...but that's another story. Upon arrival at the bus stop I was greeted by the lovely Esther and met some of the very cool Anglos I would be spending the week with. I rode on the bus with Sarian, who would later show me ... read more

Roman ruins and fairytale castles Where is my prince? We took a daytrip to Segovia today to see the Roman aqueduct (still functional, but not in use) and Alcazar castle (whichWalt Disney used as an inspiration for his castle for DisneyLand). We started at the aqueduct and Jaime (our guide) explained the history of the area and the modern lifestyle they enjoyed 2500 years ago. The aqueduct allowed them indoor plumbing and sewage systems. Jaime is a Ph.D. student studying international relations and had wonderful English. Mary and I were lucky enough to have lunch with him and soak up knowledge from him. Except for his amblyomyopia (lazy eye), he was quite attractive - in a Spanish way. Anyway, the highlight of the trip was the castle! It was so beautiful. It was so fun to ... read more
