After breakfast this morning, I made my way to my last Spanish classed at Mester. I have had so much fun in my classes, that I am really sad about ending them. Although I did find out that I passed my exam today with a 90. After class, we went home to eat lunch with our host families for the last time. I took some time to pack up all of my things, pick up some last minute things, and look over how to get to the next city. We had a farewell dinner tonight with the headmaster at a nice place called Vida & Comida. It is a nice restaurant located outside of the plaza major. They fed us 6 courses, starting with ensalada primavera. It was full of fruits like strawberries, apples, and pineapple, ... read more

After our classes today we had our exam. It was very easy, except for the part where I had to write a birthday invitation in Spanish. Apparently, at my birthday party we will be having Paella and water to drink. No birthday cake or soda. After our exam we went home for lunch. I got to eat with the French boys. I asked them what their names were in Spanish and they just answered no. Apparently, they don’t have names. My siesta time was cut short today because we ended up going to a museum. It was a very beautiful exam that I unfortunately could not understand anything about it. Our tour guide spoke Spanish, so we all just nodded and acted like we knew what she was talking about. I did pick up that a ... read more

I was woken up last night because I heard a lot of people talking and being noisy and realized I needed to go to the bathroom. So I got up and walked to the bathroom door, which was closed. I started to push the door open when I felt it being pulled from the inside. Suddenly, the door cracked open and I see the host husband sitting on the toilet. He immediately shut the door and I used another bathroom. I was half asleep and so embarrassed! I didn’t say anything this morning when I woke up. The day before the group planned to eat breakfast together, so I just left the house this morning in a hurry. A new bakery opened up in town, so we tried it out. I ordered a yummy croissant that ... read more

The night spent at our ‘emergency’ stopover turned in to two, the weather was pretty miserable but we took advantage of the site’s free Wi-Fi to plan our next few stops and devise a daft game: Campsite Croc/Clog Snooker (to do with scoring points if you spot someone wearing a pair of crocs of a certain colour… we had too much time on our hands, yes). With a route planned we headed off on the long, long road to Salamanca, driving past some majestic snow covered mountains on our left as we neared Burgos. Hours later, we made a final stop at an obscenely large ‘E. Leclerc’ supermarket, which was totally empty of customers, to stock up before arriving at our campsite. Over the next few days it’s safe to say that the weather was vile! ... read more

Classes went well this morning, and I finally got a notebook to organize my notes in. I really like my professors because they are actually teaching me what I need to know. We have an exam on Thursday, which I am really nervous about. Hopefully, I will do well! I found the frog at the University of Salamanca (remember that story) which means I should pass. After lunch we went down and explored the old University of Salamanca. It is extremely large, and still holds lectures. Before Columbus sailed to the new world, he studied at the old building of the University of Salamanca. Ferdinand and Isabelle also were visitors of the University, and have a huge portrait of themselves hanging in the main room. The building is full of Latin titles and is completed with ... read more

Today we started classes again at Mester. Each week new students come in, so classes are always changing. Mandy and I were put into an actual beginner class with a lot of students from Holland and a mother and daughter from Germany. The students from Holland do not know hardly any Spanish, so we spent most of the class reviewing. Our teacher, still Mar, kept calling on us in class to answer everything. It felt really good to be the one who knows more Spanish than others instead of being the one who is completely lost. It is a good sign that I am learning! Tomorrow they will move the people from Holland into a lower level, so it will just be me, Mandy, and the two girls from Germany. After class I went home for ... read more

Today we made our way to our first excursion to the Sierras de Francia. They are beautiful mountains in the north west of Spain. We left Salamanca at 10 and arrived about two hours later in the small villages of the mountains. The mountains got their name from the French influence that took over the villages. The small towns are left in the medieval states with gorgeous photos of scenery waiting to take place. When we first arrived, we went on a little hike down the mountain to a small waterfall. The weather was extremely cold, and most of the ground was muddy. We didn’t go too far because Carlos, our cute guide for the day, saw that one of the girls, Macy, only had flats on. So we went to a secret meat factory in ... read more

Classes this morning went really well, and lunch was great. Since I have changed rooms, I can constantly hear everything. The boys from France left this morning, although they weren’t here for very long. I got to talk to my mom and brother today as well as see my puppies, which was great. In the afternoon we went back to the Art Museum and ate churros with chocolate. They were amazing. After our stop, we went back to the school to get instructions for a scavenger hunt. We were broken up in to groups of two and given a piece of paper with questions. Of course the questions were in Spanish and we had to ask random people for the answers. I was partnered up with a girl and we hurried on our way to find ... read more

Instead of being tutored today, we replaced one of our classes with a private class. Our teacher is so sweet, and she was very helpful. She explained the words we didn’t know (still in Spanish) and made sure we understood everything before we moved on. It has taken a couple of days, but I am getting the hang of this thing called Spanish. I am learning new words every day, as well as remembering them! After class, I went home for a delicious lunch. I got to relax a little until we met up after to go to the Museum of Art. It is a beautiful museum, with a great history. It was once a mansion owned by a husband and wife. When they died it was turned in to a museum. They do not allow ... read more

If you are planning to ever go to Salamanca, make sure you bring warm clothes and an umbrella. I however, have none of the above, so I had to buy a new jacket. Luckily, Belinda, the girl from Hong Kong let me borrow her umbrella, but tomorrow I will make sure to buy an umbrella. It was very cold and rained this morning. My classes were challenging as usual, but I just try to relax and understand. (Doesn’t work all the time) After classes we went to a bakery call Hornazo to try Hornazo. Hornazo is baked good that consists of so much chorizo and ham with a top and bottom made of dough. They load on the chorizo and ham, and boy it is absolutely bueno. After we tried some, we went to our host ... read more
