Our first couple of weeks in Spain started with us cycling into Pamplona (minus the bull run). It was hot and sunny and full of Pampolese enjoying their Sunday stroll along by the river. Our dog is attached to the bike which by the stares we received told us this was not something normally witnessed in those parts. Next stop was on the north coast near Llanes in a quirky campsite more akin to Hobbiton with pitches cut into the earth in part of a steep hillside. Sadly the weather was overcast but sipping a decent Rioja looking out to the Bay of Biscay wasn’t so bad. Foz was the next pitstop and then on to our destination at Santiago de Compostela. The number of pilgrims we saw from St. Jean Pied de Port onwards was ... read more

Although this is notionally entry number 2 in the Spain blog , it is actually about my three nights in Salamanca from Friday 7 September through to Sunday night 9 September. Because of the often problems with booking weekend accommodation, especially Friday and Saturdays, I decided to book the three days as a block. Apart from the fact that Salamanca seemed a relatively pleasant place to spend such an amount of time. Although already the travel arrangements are starting to become hazy, I got the bus over there (about 90 minutes) from Avila - we may or may not ever catch up with that place. The hotel was a reasonable place called the Monterrey - an old 50s style but a reasonable price , although the room was somewhat small. It was on the fifth floor ... read more

While the girls headed to Paris I, Greg, went to meet some like-minded military history buffs in Spain. We were there for the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Salamanca. This victory over the French by the British Peninsular Army led by the Duke of Wellington resulted in the liberation of Madrid, and over the next year the liberation of Spain from France. 200 people from Britain, France, Portugal and Spain reinacted the battle in full uniform. Also involved, because it was the 200th anniversary, were modern day British and Spanish army units who coped with the heat less well than the reinacters in their authentic woolen uniforms! I coped with the rapid temperature increase to mid 30's by drinking litres of water, something my family still hasn't worked out!... read more

We had three days to cover the 650 miles from Malaga to Bilbao, allowing a more touristique route to be taken. Having ridden 250 miles the day previous to Caceres we elected to just scoot up to Salamanca a mere 125 miles north of Caceres today. This left about 270 miles to cover on Saturday to make the evening ferry from Bilbao. Salamanca has the reputation of being the Spanish’s favourite city and it is quickly apparent why. A magnificent square is perhaps the centrepiece but it is thronged all around by superb architecture. The University’s inner courtyards rivalled those of the Cambridge colleges and the Cathedral and other buildings of the old city, churches and municipal, mesmerising. Added to this the town had a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere and the ambience of a feel-good student town ... read more

So this is what happened this weekend: On Friday we went to class a little early and went back to have lunch. Directly after lunch we went on our next excursion. The excursion this weekend was to Salamanca and Ávila. These are two cities that cannot be any more different. But I will get to that later. After the hour and a half bus ride we arrived inn Salamanca and enjoyed the best hotel that I have ever seen. It was a four star hotel that our professor booked and it was a success. The only problem was the weird showers, which had a pressure washer in them and a waterfall for a showerhead. Other than that it was a lot of fun. We pretty much put our stuff down and met up to walk out ... read more

Thoughts to Jot: Where to even begin! My time in Morocco was like a dream. Warning to everyone now-this entry will likely be far more sentimental than all the others so stop reading if need be...The second we (another American female student from my program and I) stepped off the plane in Marrakech I was thrilled. It was so different, so incredibly different, than any other place I had ever been. And the heat that enveloped us was unbelievable-I loved it. Shortly after arriving, we began wondering the souks-the amazing street markets. First, we got an unofficial tour by a Moroccan boy of how some of the beautiful fabrics and dyes are made. Then we were wooed into one of the small vendor’s “stores” by a 20 something-year old Moroccan, Kareem, and offered Moroccan tea. And ... read more

Thoughts to Jot: Well, I have now accomplished two amazing translation feats! The first being constructively arguing and navigating conflict resolution in Spanish (with Judith) and now, making a pass on my professor in Spanish! I managed to get Enrique (the hot Cultura class professor) alone for a “tutorial” (like office hours) to discuss tips on my trips around Spain. All seemed to be going well and the energy seemed right, so, I did as Judith instructed. Apparently, in order to make my interest in him clear, I needed to ask him “Quires tomar un cafe?” Translation: Want to grab a coffee with me? And, if he says yes, and joins me, good sign... Bless his heart, he agreed but let’s just say that at the end of the coffee date, it was very clear there ... read more

Thoughts to Jot: I've already said this to a couple of you, but one of my favorite parts of traveling is that you have no idea what each day will bring you! I seriously feel so much more open to spontaneity and what the Universe has to offer when I travel. Last weekend I had no evening plans and Judith invited me out with her friends. We were out until 4:30 AM-hanging out with 2 different groups of friends of hers. She showed me all the cool bars where the Spaniards hang out (VERY awesome places-unlike the bars I've seen in the States) and I found myself dancing to solely Spanish music all night and watching spontaneous bouts of Flamenco dancing break out. Very fun! The next day (I slept three hours that morning then was ... read more

So - BLOG ONE.......here goes: Tuesday 17 & Wednesday 18 April – A coffee stop at Claire’s with a great send-off from her and the boys began our 2012 adventure to Spain. Boarded the ferry at Portsmouth and set sail in cold and windy weather at 5pm. The evening passed pleasantly with a passable steak meal and an excellent cabaret – a magician and Frank Sinatra! The weather was pretty rough but we spent an OK night in our tiny yet adequate cabin....waking now and again, either to try and get more comfortable in our bunk beds or to the sound of everything on the dressing table crashing to the floor then rolling around or overturned chairs! ................’til about 10.30am when we surfaced, breakfasted, read, lunched, read etc. The restaurant suffered a good amount of broken ... read more

Thoughts to Jot: Life is now (knock on wood!) very peaceful and easy at Casa de Judith. Thanks again for all the positive thoughts sent my way! Loving the old men here-they love to flirt with the ladies and will gladly practice speaking Spanish with you. Also loving the 20 something year olds who ask around for me when they don't see me out at the bars every Thurs-Sat night-appreciate the recognition :) but seriously cannot keep up with that!!! Last time I went out with them we were out until 4:30 AM and that's still early... My age is truly showing!! Included some pictures of me and the 20 something year olds out at "los baros." Not loving my Spanish grammar class-flashbacks to high school math classes where I didn't understand a darn thing! I ... read more
