I woke up around 10 and waited for the Ozzie that I met yesterday to meet me in the hostel lobby. I read some, napped, and then read some more. Reading really has made homesickness less noticeable. I met him downstairs at 1 and we actually ran into another Ozzie that I met the night before and the three of us went to Alhambra together. What was really cool was that we got to the Alhambra at around 2:00 pm and that is when the afternoon session started. There are 500 tickets in every session but we were there at the very beginning when most of the tickets were still available. Our time to enter the Nasrid Palace Grounds was perfect too. It was spaced so that we did not have to do much waiting anywhere. ... read more

I do not think that this feeling will go away. I do not think that it will be as strong as it was on the first day here but I definitely think that I miss the familiar. But anyway I will tell you what I have been up to. For starters I got lost in a good book. It was really refreshing to just sit and relax for a few hours and read. I have not done that in a really long time and though I am not at home it took a little piece to me. I read into the afternoon and met a couple guys that had just checked into the hostel. They aid they were going to go see the city, so I said why not? There were four of us: an American, ... read more

It was sad saying good-bye. I knew it was coming but I regretted it anyway. As I said this was an amazing group and I had fun here. As I have been reminded, there are some things that you just have to let go. I understand doing that to a point, but I will not do it completely. It is harder to keep holding on to it, but I can deal. We all traveled to the airport and some of us traveling after to various places stayed behind and went to the city together. As we went on our way in the metro, two of the guys and one girl had to go their ways and I was left with a couple friends for the day. We went to the train station and got our tickets, ... read more

I think that Sunday was a day we had been dreading, but fortunately procrastinating. A quick outline of what we did: four of us met up and played soccer in the park. Then we met later in the day for the soccer game versus Italy, and then dinner at 9:30 pm. I feel that this program has been too short. I feel that I just began making new friends and getting settled into Segovia and then I have to leave. There is a saying: Spain is Different. It is the damn truth. I have never been more in love with a place and had so much fun with a group of people. I’ve been spoiled. I am writing this from my hostel in Granada and I feel all alone because the best group that I have ... read more

Today we went around the city again. Our first stop was the Cathedral, which is absolutely breathtaking. There was a room dedicated to the clothing of the bishops of Toledo. There were robes in-laid with gold, sapphires, and pearls. I mean countless man-hours spent on every piece. There was a gigantic atrium with ornate marble and carved stone. The stained-glass windows were decorated perfectly depicting various biblical scenes. It is the fist gothic-style cathedral that we saw and I have to say it was another place that I cannot forget. After walking out the Cathedral a guy approached us on the street and offered to take us to an art workshop. We said sure, knowing that we would not buy anything. He took us to a Damascene art co-op, a place where artists come make their ... read more

On Friday we took our final excursion: to Toledo. Toledo is the most beautiful city that I have seen in all of Spain. It is nestled up on a hill surrounded by a river. We left Segovia after our final class and went to the city in the afternoon. In the afternoon we had free time to do whatever we wanted to do after we were shown around the city. I decided to go with a couple friends and the professors to a cathedral and Synagogue. The coolest part about this was the Cathedral had been converted into a bar and a club. However all of the decorations and lighting was free standing so that if need be the entire building could be converted back to its original state. The synagogue was one of the best-preserved ... read more

After Madrid I had a fantastic final week. On Wednesday we decided o go for a hike. There are many mountains in the area if you couldn’t guess from the pictures. The bus ride was about 20 minutes out of the city (it was 2.50 both ways too) and we found the trail up to the mountain by walking toward the mountain and getting help from a random stranger. I’m glad they knew enough Spanish because I could not understand what was going. All in all we went up the mountain for two and a half hours and ended up finding a place to relax and enjoy Nutella-Peanut Butter Sandwiches. The view was incredible because we could see all the way out into the city and to various places we have visited in the area, like ... read more

Today we took an excursion to Madrid. For this they didn’t let us take photos anywhere so I think that the internet will suffice as far as images for you. We took the bus out of Segovia at 9 this morning and arrived at the Palacio Real at 10:30. The Palace is absolutely huge. King Louis XV (son of Louis XIV who is famous for being one of the most brutal leaders in the history of Europe) built the Palace. Just as a side note: Does anyone else notice how interbred the great monarchy’s of Europe are? Like the King of Spain is the son of the King of France. There are more connections but those are not important. The palace was gigantic. It consisted of more rooms than I can count. We had a really ... read more

On Sunday, our day consisted of getting up a little later and heading over to the Olympic park. It is a shame that the park in shambles and that that is what happens to most Olympic parks. It was not that bad to look at but it defiantly was not the place it was 12 years ago. All of the fields and events places were closed but I am not sure whether because of the fact that it was a Sunday or because there is on money for upkeep. Anyway, it was really cool to see and it was in decent enough condition for us. After leaving the park we went to a big shopping street and walked down it toward the pier. We met our professor at the first part of the street, said hi ... read more

So Saturday was also a blast. We started off with a trip to ye olde Sagrada Familia. You know, the premier cathedral in the world that is in the works for completion in the next 50 years. The cathedral that Gaudi designed for 40 years straight and then only saw 1 face completed. It was freaking incredible and I hope you will look at all of the photos that I post. Each piece is intricately made with symbolism and attention to detain. It was Gaudi’s piece that is designed to represent the works of the ages. He knew that the building would never be done in his lifetime so he wanted it to be a building that allows each generation to contribute. There is a large amount of controversy surrounding the selection of the pieces that ... read more
