1/18 Took care of some laundry business today. Allegedly, we can wash our own clothes using the washing machines in the residency on the weekends, but of course, I didn’t find this out until Monday afternoon, meaning I have to wait a whole week more for clean clothes. As I was already running low on underpants, though not quite to the point of turning them inside out, I went in search of a laundromat. I found one where, for 7.50 euros, you can drop off a load and they will wash it, dry it, and have it ready for you the next day. Feeling independent on the walk home, I stopped into a Papeleria and picked up a much needed folder for class, some postcards to send home, and, wait for it....a Spanish copy of the ... read more

I’ve been in Salamanca for an official week today! I feel like I’ve already been here forever, and yet the days seem to have flown by. It's still hard to believe I'm going to be here for months at a time! I can't wrap my head around it. I walk to class and pass by grand old cathedrals and huge, ornate plazas cuddled up amongst crowded cobblestone streets. I almost expect to see swordsmen and horses galloping about, but then an auto-bus will come whizzing around the corner to snap me out of my reveries. We flew from London to Madrid, then took a 2 1/2 hour bus ride from Madrid to Salamanca under gray skies and rain. Out of the 28 AIFS students, 8 of us are staying in the student residency. The rooms are ... read more

Road Trip Update After the shaky first night we settled into a great trip! DAY TWO - we drove about 340km's to a tiny mountain village called Alquezar. After a 2 hour walk around the city and up to the lookout we returned to our campsite (a beautiful camp ground and we were the only one's there for €16). We relaxed and cooked up pasta for dinner then I crashed early at only 9.30pm!! haha. DAY THREE - we made a slow start to the day and only got on the road at 10.30am. We set off not really knowing where to go... we ended up choosing a scenic windy road and a town called Vitoria. We drove about 350km's. In Vitoria we found the tourist info centre and discovered while there were no camp ... read more

Before I ever came to Spain, I knew that I wanted to go to Salamanca. It started again with my high school Spanish teacher, Mr. Armstrong, who told us tons about it in class. Since then, I have had lots of friends and met many other people that have spent time there, and insisted that I visit. So, rather last minute, I saw a perfect window to go for one night and a full day. I was just going to go by myself and meet up with my Santa Clara acquaintance Kim who I met in Lisbon, but the day before I found a traveling partner to go with me, Junting from China. We caught (barley after a mad dash from the metro to the bus) a bus on Friday afternoon that took us to Salamanca ... read more

Hey everyone, So i haven't written in a few days, pretty much just been getting settled in my flat, getting shopping in and figuring out how to use the washing machine and such things. So we didn't go out on saturday night, which sounds like it might have been the main night for fiesta, but our housemates did. Leaving at around 11 at night and gettting back around 7am. Sounds like a good night! Sunday in the evening we went to the Plaza Mayor to listen to some music and a quick to our Irish bar. The music was 3 girls dressed in 60s dress singing in English, which is quite odd because a) sometimes they pronounced things funny and b) I wonder how many people in the audience actually spoke english. Probably more than i ... read more

Hola amigos! So today we (kind of) moved in to our new apartment con Ricardo y Sergio. Its very nice and we have nice big rooms and our own bathroom. However as our rooms still need to be painted we are still living out of our suitcase for the day. We mosied around town today, staying away from the apartment as the paint was supposed to come (but never did). We are right next to the river and on the way into town have a gorgeous view of the river, cathedral and petshop with some v. adorable turtles and hamsters in the window (muy importante). It's the start of the fiestas so lots of people were around town and there was a procession in the Plaza Mayor, culminating in a speech by someone famous. We believe ... read more

Hola! Today was a lazy day. Slept in, did some tourist things involving taking about a million photos of the catedral nueva. The Catedral nueva was gorgeous inside with a really high ceiling and lots of religios artwork, that you would expect in a cathedral. Only a handful of people were exploring at the same times as us including a french tour group, but that could be as it coming toward the end of tourist season, end of summer. I fully recommend seeing La Catedral Nueva, and it's free to get in so you can't really waste your money. The only thing i have against it is that a certain depiction of Christ claims to have been created in the 16th Century but looks like plastic. I don't understand why he is standing on a bed ... read more
