I started school in Seville. I have four classes each day from 9:55 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. I have History of Spain, Grammar, Short Stories, and Art History. I am thinking twice as hard in my classes because EVERYTHING is in Spanish. It is really good though. I live with a single older woman, Ana Franco Conde, in a tiny apartment. It is a 15 minute walk across the bridge from the school. I live in a neighborhood called “Los Remedios.” I eat my three meals at Ana’s apartment. Breakfast is always a piece of toast with tea. Lunch is the biggest meal, at 2:30 p.m., so there is the main dish with a salad and a piece of fruit for dessert. Dinner is served at 9:30 p.m. and is another light meal. The meal is ... read more

Well, I've had a couple comments about food, so I guess I'll just fill you in on some of the differences. Cole . . . I ate squid for you! Well, not really for you, but because I wanted to try it. It has a really gross texture, really rubbery, but actually a good taste. I've also been eating other types of sea food, which, for those of you who know me, is something of a stretch. Also beans. We've had one type of soup a couple times that has beans in it, but I just eat it and drink a lot of water. It works. One of my favorite new foods is Spanish tortilla. It's almost like an omlet, but it's potatoes and onion and egg and then you kinda fry it together. My (awesome) ... read more

hey! I´ve really been lazy at keeping this up... but these first weeks have understandably been really busy. I really have a lot to say (as usual), but I know super-long posts are a bit overwhelming, so I will make this relatively painless and just try to update more often in the future... Well, it´s Sunday night, and we´ve officially been here for two weeks. Lauren (my roommate) and I get along really well; i´m really glad. However, we´re having a few minor problems with our homestay--our señora is always on the phone or chatting on the internet with her boyfriend, and she doesn´t really attempt to engage us in conversation (as much as we´d like). We´d really like her to be more involved in our experience here than she is. We are going to talk ... read more

Today, i sat in a plaza. to one side of me was an ancient wall built to defend a city, to the other the 3rd largest cathedral in the world. within the cathedral is a minaret from a mosque. in front of me was a monument to the virgen mary. all around me were people speaking a beautiful language. i sat there, watching people live their lives. it was wonderful. to my left a couple, the man playing a beautiful spanish melody on his guitar, and the woman singing along. to my right, a couple with a wonderful spanish baby asleep on their laps. and a group of young spanish adults all greeting eachother with warm kisses on the cheek. It is wonderful to be surrounded by such strong and vibrant rythms. everywhere i am there ... read more

HECK YES! I made it to Spain. Sevilla is sooo pretty, and my Sra. is amazing. There are a lot of Americans here, but hopefully after classes start (in two weeks), we'll be able to interact with more Spaniards. Our classes will be just the "foreign kid" classes, but they will be completely in Spanish. I'm only a little nervous! I've been walking a ton, and I have the blisters to prove it. I try not to wear my tennis shoes too much, but I've been pampering myself lately, becaue of the blisters. As soon as I can, I plan to post some pictures, so just hang in there. Until then . . . I'm out.... read more

My favorite place (and the first place) was the Al Hambra in Granada (Beautiful Ancient Muslim Palace that was kept in good condition when a Catholic King decided to build his palace around it). The next afternoon we went to Nerja - a small town on the coast (in the region of Malaga). It rained most of the time, so we couldn't take too much advantage of the beach (it was also colder than I expected). We had 'orientation classes' which included Flamenco classes, specifically 'La Sevillana' - inspired me to take the semester long class too. And basically, we went out and partied every night . We also stopped by Frigiliana (a small traditional town where all the buildings are painted white, cobble stoned streets and little old ladies dressed in black hobble around. I ... read more

Here I am in Sevilla, in the afternoon on my first full day here in the flat. Alvaro is at uni, and i´m home alone, so soon i´ll leave here to explore the city until meeting up with him at around 8pm. The trip from Melbourne to Sevilla seemed to last for ages. I stopped in Singapore where I was to stay for 24 hours more or less. I stayed the night at the airport, and it was a very long night indeed. There was basically nothing to do in the public are where i was, so from 11pm until 7am i did laps of the area, slept lightly for about an hour in total, went to a cafe, and listened to music in the viewing area. The airport, like every other building in Singapore for ... read more

hola a todos! Lo siento for the short first message - I was a bit rushed and was paying for the time on the internet. Just a little summary - I am studying through an independent study abroad program called International Studies Abroad (ISA). (www.studiesabroad.com) I´ll be here until May 20. When I return, I have about a month at home before I leave for my summer training for Teach for America. Then, as I said before, I am moving to Los Angeles in August! I´m not sure I thought I´d ever write that sentence... We arrived in granada yesterday around 6pm to meet our ¨senoras,¨ the women who we´re staying with for the semester. My roommate´s name is lauren, and she´s from ohio. As I write this I keep staring at the computer trying to ... read more

Well, I´m here! I am very tired right now and need to get to bed, but I thought I´d take some time to say hello to all of you. Madrid is so great... but we leave tomorrow for Toledo and then finally to Granada by Friday. More details later, but all is good. Oh, I suppose I could also say that I just found out that I´ll be spending the next two years of my life in Los Angeles, California (with Teach for America). It definitely wasn´t my first choice (I was hoping for the east coast), but I am ready to work wherever I am needed. Oh man, I need sleep. I will write more and post some photos as soon as I can, although it will probably be a few days (when we actually ... read more

Here is stuff I couldn't get up on the blog before (wireless difficulties to be elaborated in subsequent blog). A bit outdated but covers final thoughts on Spain and some travel in Morocco. Wow, that all seems so long ago! Part 5 November 22: Seville We sit in our apartment at 5:00, just having finished lunch (a not that atypical timing for Spaniards), and all is quiet as Koby and Elaine read and Manya zips through another few ounces of her math book (with the heavy pages of this book, which we throw away as they are completed, we measure homework in weight rather than time or pages). Our friends have an apartment downstairs, a perfect arrangement that took a bit of searching at the tourist office where they offered a raft of hotel rooms ... read more
