Yesterday was hard to be away from home because Meredith, my sister, got engaged! The news is so exciting, yet I really wish I could be in the US so I could feel more included in the upcoming months. At least I have e-mail. Today was a really great day though, so that made up for a sad day yesterday. I visited a new church called Iglesia Cristiana Evangélica Betania. This is another Plymouth Brethren church so I felt at home, sort of. The congregation was very friendly. The man behind me even whispered the hymn number when I didn’t catch the number. I even recognized two of the hymns, “Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty” and “Blessed Redeemer” but of course they were in Spanish. I really felt like an America though when I had ... read more

My body is shutting down. It doesn’t like all this walking and exercising. It’s hard core son! Let me first note that the hotel had the best continental breakfast ever! I will wake up early for that any day! Okay, we saw a lot of sights on our “study” tour. We went to the Museo Arquelologico and I thought it was never going to end. It was cool, but after you’ve seen ten rooms full of pots and statues, you don’t really want to see ten more. Then we went to el Parque Maria Luisa and the Catedral. The Catedral was beautiful and from what I understand, Christopher Columbus, his son, and perhaps his sister are all buried there. When our guide said we could go to the top we all rushed up. No one could ... read more

On Tuesday I had my first day of community service. I added a class to my schedule where I spend 2.5 or more hours a week serving the community. I work at Misión Urbana Evangelica. The site helps the community by giving out food and clothing. I work in “el ropero” by distributing clothes. A person stands at the door and asks for whatever item they need. I hopefully understand them and go search for something that will please them. Usually the person asks for clothes for their different family members so I have to guess on a size when someone says “grande.” I’m almost like a personal shopper! The donated clothes are far from what I would recommend though. When the doors open to the public everyone gathers in the main room to hear a ... read more

Today our group ventured to Cordoba. I think it was like a five hour drive. On the sides of the highway it’s all green. It looks so nice and clean. But there is never anywhere to stop. Okay, well I’m gonna stop lying cuz we all know I was sleep the whole time! I did see the huge random bull thing though. I guess that’s what they have instead of billboards! Who knows. Spain is way too cool. But their rest stops are totally different than ours. They have a little bar with bocadillas, a store with random snacks, vending machines, and then bathrooms. But everything is inside. I can’t describe it that well, but it’s really different. The thing that kills me about Spain is there are no bathrooms! You can’t just walk in somewhere ... read more

I have this whooping cough I can't shake. My host mom actually spoon fed me jarabe (cough syrup) the other morning. It was like being 8 year old again. I've had more cough drops than I can count. It must be bird flu or something. :) I went running today around Ronda because with all these carbs, full fat milk, and red meat, I'm bound to be the fattest fat that ever fatted. I ran to the edge of the city and then climbed the path down. Oh yes, it´s a blast going down but GOOD GOD going up was horrible. It's full vertical! If I do that everyday, I'm going to have buns of steel! I'm super excited because Jamie (a girl I go to school with at KSU who is now studying in Sevilla) ... read more

I thought I had posted an entry earlier but I´m not seeing it. I must have dreamed it or something. Anyway...today marks one week since I came to Ronda. It´s all very exciting. Life here is very nice and tranquilo. It has taken awhile to get used to because everything, from food to the way they spend their time, is different. My typical day involves me waking up around 7:45, getting ready, and then eating breakfast with my madre. Breakfast always consists of pan (bread). I have options for toppings but I tend to go for olive oil. mmm mmm School starts at 9 am so I leave my house around 8:30 to get there. It's a long walk to say the least but the walk is beautiful and the school is an old palace. Once ... read more

So, although I haven´t had the opportunity to interact with many Spaniards my age, I have managed to make friends with the other Americans in my program. I thought I´d reflect on them briefly. Leshia. Not just a friend from my program, but my "amiga mejor" none the less. We are, again, roommates, and fortunately, we´re still tight. We have two language classes together, so studying should be fun. Matt. From near DC area, attends University of Maryland. This kid was fortunate enough to attend a bilingual elementary school where half of the day was in Spanish and half in English. Although he claims to have lost some of the Spanish skills, I don´t believe him. Matt and I talk about music and read our respective Spanish books together. Parks are more fun when there are ... read more

First of all, giving a shout out to my dad and Teela who both have their birthdays this week... HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! Wish I could be there! Love you! So this past weekend, I went on the one free NYU sponsered trip. It was to Cordoba and Granada. We left on Friday, early in the morning for a 5 hour bus ride to Cordoba. We arrived around 1:30 and had lunch. Then we toured the Mezquita(there are pictures). Then we took a quick tour of the Jewish district and a small syanagague(one of the only 3 surviving in Spain). By 5:30 we were back on the bus on the way to Granada. After the 2 hour ride with gorgeous views we arrived at the Hotel Alhamar and got our room keys. Yelena and I shared a room. ... read more

Weekend was great. We left early Friday morning for our 6ish hours to Cordoba. There we saw the Mosque. It is absolutely breathtaking. The huger building is supported by double arches inside. What I also love about mosques is that they do not include any ridiculously expensive pieces nor put statues or symbols of people in their place of worship. I feel as if mosques, especially this one, showed to what levels architecture could be executed without spending an absurd amount of money or stealing gold from the Americas. It was simply a place of worship. You came in, sat on your mat and prayed. Later during the reconquista, the Christians took back over Spain. Granada was the last stronghold of the Muslims. So once this is taken back, they change the mosque into a church, ... read more

Hola. Que passa? Time for another update. We last left you in Malaga. Since then we’ve left the ass of Spain well behind us. First stop was Seville. Famous for Flamenco dancers, its massive cathedral…and its barbers. We saw the first 2 but despite Iain desperately needing a haircut, could not find the Barber of Seville. We started with the Cathedral - the third biggest Cathedral in the world, and the largest gothic one. The story has it that the people of Seville decided to build a Cathedral so big, that others would say they were mad. Hence we have coined the phrase - to be as mad as a Sevillian. The Cathedral was fantastic and I’ve never heard such an exuberant tolling of bells to signify quarter to the hour. One of our best travel ... read more
