I had an exciting, typical college-aged weekend. I played beer pong for the first time. For a first timer, I did pretty well but my team was defeated by the Irish team. We had a barbecue at the Irish students' apartment on Saturday. It was good to eat a hamburger. Jeff and Pedro left for Sevilla but left me with the keys to their place...bad idea...well kind of. My German friend, Andrea, and I cleaned their place until it sparkled because it's soooo dirty and we spend a lot of time over there. Our services come with a price though...their living room is now filled with half naked men pictures...haha. Sunday, Pedro and Jeff finally got home. We "celebrated" by cooking and watching Disney movies in Spanish..you know, like you do. So here I am...no ... read more

La Three faces of Semana Santa. (or, "it's easter in catholicburg") Lo Bueno----------------------------------------------------------- apparently, somewhere between la calle paz and the plaza de gracia, one brave hippy took his first step towards rehablitation. I don´t know if it was the approaching weeklong parade celebrating the resurrection of jesus your lord, or simply that he was too stoned on Moroccan ‘chocolate’ to continue to carry them, but this little miracle kept one hippy, and his colorfully wrapped psychadelic sticks, off the streets of this hard working town for at least a minor span of this festival thrown in honor of white baby jesus. Lo Malo-------------------------------------------------------------- well, I guess that;s a debatable term, but I get a little uneasy when I see six year olds in Klan hoods holding lit candles and blankly following a six foot... read more

pics of the bull fight to follow. disclaimer: there is no question this is a cruel outdated activity. but it happens so lets get past that and appreciate the spectacle that it is. this was the first bull fight of the season, there was a hum of anticipation and impatience. the bars were full around the stadium and we were tucked inside one of these eating tapas, drinking beer and talking about australian history and politics to our american friend Jay. no doubt he was facsinated... the time soon arrived when the crowd began to move. mickey and i didnt have tickets, after a morning of failed negotiations with various shifty fellows who were waiting to prey on gringos like us outside the stadium. so again, we walked to the stadium for one last attempt. we ... read more

It was dark by the time we arrived in Granada from Málaga. At a luz rojo, a man on a motorscooter knocked on our window. He introduced himself as an official tourist-helper-man. We pulled over, and he called around to see if he could find us lodging for the night. Again, almost every bed in town was full of tourists who had made reservations in advance. We were puzzled as to how he knew we were tourists in need of help, until we remebered the ¨Pepe cars¨sticker on the side of our vehicle, identifying us as tourists to one and all. Mauriano was his name, and helping lost chicas was his game. At last he found a hotel nearby that had an extra room in the back that they could rent us for the night. ¨You ... read more

Another early flight out of Gatwick and we were on our way to Malaga airport for our transfers to Torremolinos, one of the most popular tourist destinations of the Costa del Sol. I was looking forward to the possibility of getting some skin on my newly transparent skin. I tell ya, I can’t wait to get back home to Aus to get a bit of color on my bod!! We stayed at a hotel not far from the beach, and after dropping off our gear, we all ventured out to get a drink and check out the Spanish coastline. The sand was nice, considering many European beaches are pebbly and dark, and the water of the Mediterranean was beautifully clean and blue. Walking along the 'golden mile' of beach it is easy to understand why so ... read more

After the two hour drive from Córdoba, we were excited to see the blue waters of the Mediterranean in Málaga. We walked hotel to hotel, finding the city to be completely full of Semana Santa vacationers. Finally, we found a home at Hostal Capri. At least we wouldn´t be sleeping on the beach tonight! We walked the two blocks to the seaside and as it started to rain, we found a charming tapas bar with a great view of the sea. Here, a tinto de verano only costs €1.40, and you get a tapa gratis with every drink. With my first drink I ordered a portion of my favorite, tortilla española... and they brought me...a piece of sausage wrapped in bacon. It was delicious, but it wasn´t tortilla. With my second drink I ordered tortilla...and they ... read more

Semana Santa is the big holy week of vacations here. No Easter bunnies, no eggs, no Peeps. Just good old fashioned religious processions, prayers, and trips to EuroDisney. So while Blanca and Pedrito went to visit Mickey Mouse (¿Miguel Ratón?), I was free to have an adventure of my own . As a very wise friend recently pointed out to me, only a certain kind of person is crazy enough to enroll in Spanish classes in Madrid for four hours a day. So when some chicas from my school invited me to join them on a Semana Santa road trip, I was thrilled at the chance to spend time with some locas of my own kind. We really didn´t know each other, but ¡vamonos! We rented a car with a big orange ¨Pepe cars¨ sticker on ... read more

Despite the wind, we decided since we were with in walking distance to the beach we had to go at least set foot upon it. We even managed to lay out about 45 minutes before we could no longer endure the cool wind. I don’t think I even changed color at all. After that we decided to go back to Alberts for lunch. Lunch did not disappoint us either, it really good as well. I had a super salad with tuna (yummy)! Then we even got dessert. I don’t remember what it was called but it had toffee, and chocolate and cream. Then we decided to drive into Malaga city to check it out. We saw the cathedral from the outside and inside. It was very impressive. We walked around a little more (I got a ... read more
