El Chorro: Steep gorges of Orange Rock, blue-skies and warm Spanish mid-winter sun, and a group of cave-dwelling climbers intent on celebrating life! I came to El Chorro to hopefully meet up with some climbers and get on the rock for a bit before my plunge back to cold-europe for christmas. What I have found is a scene that inspires and captivates, and one that I am not so eager to leave. Living in a cave in winter may sound like pretty tough going, but it really is quite comfortable. Our cave - one of about 9 - has doors, windows, a cooker, even a kitchen sink outside! It stays really quite warm day and night, and with the added amenities of couch, mattress and fireplace (with chimney) is a good one! Among the cave-dwellers here, ... read more

Well, if for some reason I wasn't coming across as random enough for you up until now, then get a load of this! Some American girls I met at the hostel, in passing comment mentioned that they'd met a 'friendly hippie' at the markets who invited them to come and stay at a commune up in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. They didn't really know much else about it apart from the mud map this guy had drawn them, and they didn't really seem too serious about the idea. However, as if by some cosmic destiny, I had, at that particular point in time drunk too much coffee and on hearing this, decided to pour all of my caffeine-induced mania into convincing them to actually do it! So then next thing I knew, the five ... read more

After about a week in spain, it's almost inevitable that you will develop semi-reverse sleeping patterns. If you sleep in a bit too long, you will finally venture outside at maybe 1:30 or 2pm to find that everything is closed! On discovering that nothing reopens until 5pm, you decide to may as well go and recline on the terrace with a beer until it does. And that's the point of no return. For the rest of the evening you are in a cheerful 'up for anything' mood and as soon as someone suggests going to see some Flamenco or popping out for a bit of Tapas at 11pm, you accept graciously and don't check your watch again til' 3! This has been happening to me every night for the past week, and (not that I'm complaining!) ... read more

When I come back to Granada I know where I'm going to live. Today I went for a walk up the hill to the "Cuevas de Sacromonte". If there is anything in this world that comes close to a real-life Lord-of-the-Rings style Hobbit Village, this is it! It is incredible! Centuries ago, people actually just dug caves into the side of the hill and setup their lives in them! Some families are still there- with incredibly fancy and extended caves- but a whole load have just been abandoned or are being used by gypsies and... that's right, Travellers! On my walk, I found a cave on the top of the hill that was completely empty, bar a fireplace and two couches. I sat a while on one of the couches and looked out over what must ... read more

...or rather 'foot', as I'm still hobbling around on one and a half legs. I'm chilling here in Granada til the 15th, when I fly out (no longer from Barcelona, as I couldn't afford the bus ticket back! A FLIGHT to the UK was cheaper!! Thanks Dad! :) Thierry and Guillaume, my Français-speaking friends from Edinburgh came to visit me the other day on their way home. It was so good to see familiar faces after trekking to what at first seemed like the edge of the Earth! We hung out for the day and I limped around with them drinking cervecas and eating tapas for most of the arvo. In the end we went up to the viewpoint and sat around while the sun went down over Alhambra castle - agreeing that it was a ... read more

OK, well, it's official. I am a bit crazy. I have a bit of a screw loose. There is something different about my brain that makes me do strange things occasionally. Strange things like HITCHHIKING 1000 ks from BARCELONA TO GRANADA!! :S I know I mentioned it previously, but at the time I thought that, yeah, yeah this was just another one of Charlie's hair-brained ideas that will never come to fruition- but no, on Saturday morning I found myself leaving the hostel in Barcelona and jumping on a random south-bound train to the outskirts of Barcelona where I then asked a perplexed looking local the direction south and began to walk... and walk... and walk... In the insufficient amount of research I did, I found many articles written by experienced travellers telling of how impossible ... read more

Hola a todos! So it´s the first day of December, and I figured I should write a blog since my last entry was a month ago! Here´s a quick update of the past month of my Spain adventure: A day after I got back from London, my family came to visit me in Madrid! The first day they were here, I took them on a walking tour of the city. Looking back, this was probably not the best idea because they still had jet lag. We had tapas that night with my profesor and also went out to dinner. The next day (Saturday) my aunt Lindy and her friend Linda came. It was rainy so we had to find stuff to do that was indoors. The sad thing was that it continued to rain for the ... read more

With about 6 weeks to go until leaving to Spain, I'm trying to get my student visa, and it's not as easy as I expected. But it's the only way for me to stay in Spain for more than 90 days. I was thinking about getting a plane to Gibraltar (which is a UK enclave in the south of Spain), and crossing the border without getting my passport checked and stamped. People on the Lonely Planet Thorn Tree Forum advised strongly against this. A few others said it would be no problem. Well, it's better to be safe than sorry; I'm compiling all my information together for a student visa. In Singapore, where I'll be stopping for a day, I'll probably catch both public transport to the city centre, and dengue fever from the many mosquitos ... read more
