Breaking all my Fitness Rules Anyone who has known me for very long is aware of my lifelong anti-love affair with running. Many people can probably tell you that my number one fitness rule goes as follows: “Run only when chased.” It has served me well, leaving me things such as rollerblading, skiing, and paintball (see above rule) to fill in the fitness gap between lifting weights with my buddy Trent Busenitz (Trent, I miss the exercise balls). So I was reticent when my good friend Emilio invited me to run in Seville’s 17th annual Guadalquivir River Night Run. He said he could sign me up and get me my number, and I could just meet all our friends who were running in it at the bridge where it started. Willing to bend my rules in ... read more

A Little Piece of America & The Last Bullfight Although it’s more of a visual experience, I should mention that I took a little tour of the Plaza de Las Americas today and got a few more pictures of the fantastic Plaza de España while looking for a place to do a painting. The doves are glorious in the little plaza out front, appropriately named “La Gloria de Las Palomas”, while brides and grooms abounded, getting their wedding pictures taken. Both of these amazing locals were built for World’s Fair exhibitions in the early 1900s. Currently a global culture exhibition around the Plaza de Las Americas offers a spectacular sampling of real food from way more countries than I have ever seen represented at such an event: from Pakistan to real Cuban. I have a new ... read more

I’m sitting on my bed writing. It is Sunday afternoon and the apartment is empty and I really just feel like I need to write some before I bury myself in homework for the day. Thank you, Nora (B’s Sister at MSU- yes, the funniest person I know), for sending me my first and only piece of mail. Nora, I especially enjoyed your large handwriting. Mercedes said I can walk around barefoot or wearing only socks. It may not sound like a big deal- but really- it is to me. Little by little I am learning that she isn’t as traditional as I hear everyone else’s “senoras” here. Mercedes doesn’t consider herself religious, however, yesterday was her saint’s day. The custom here seems to be that you have kind of a second birthday on the date ... read more

Things here are all good. I went on a day trip to Cordoba this Friday, which was nice. Not too eventful, but it was really pretty. We went on a tour of a really old mosque and a synagogue (i have no idea how to spell...I know). And we went to a pretty nice lunch at this really cute place. On Saturday a few of us went back to Cadiz, a nearby beach city and just spent the whole day doing nothing there, which was glorious. We just bought some bread, cheese, and tomatoes and made some makeshift sandwiches (of course I hadn't even remembered to bring my swiss army knife!). Aaaalmost got rid of my tan lines :-p Sunday night we went to this Moroccan tearoom/hookah bar, which was really cute. We got there too ... read more

Well folks it’s my last full day in Spain and I must admit I’m a little sad to be leaving so soon. I have loved my tour of Andalucia and the cities of Seville, Granada and Cordoba, each one offering something different and something very unique. The people on the whole are very friendly, particularly to tourists who attempt to speak the language. Anyway before I get all teary-eyed I just thought I’d check-in a write about today’s proceedings. Its very handy having the internet café literally in my doorstep and as this is probably my last chance to write until I get to Italy I thought I’d sit down have a beer and write this entry. OK having just opened my Cruzcampo (one of the local drops) I will describe today’s activities. I woke up ... read more

I left Granada bright and early this morning so that I could get to Cordoba as early as possible as I only have two nights here and then I jump on a plane back to London on Sunday morning (25th). Granada was a great experience, mainly due to the lure of the Alhambra however it is nice to arrive here in Cordoba, a much smaller town that moves at an even slower pace than Seville or Granada. The three hour bus trip snaked its way through the hills of Andalucia and Jaen province which is the richest olive oil producing region in Spain and possibly the world. It seemed that every hill and valley was covered with olive groves and the contrast of the grey-green olive trees, so perfectly sown row by row and the pinkish ... read more

Seville: the capital of Andalusia is a compact and relaxing city with a rich cultural heritage. We (my hubby Sadiq & I) were in Seville in September 2005. It was a long weekend trip to get away for a few days from the work pressures back home in London.. and to get a bit of late sunshine at the start of autumn in England......... which we sure did get cos the weather in Seville is just beautiful - lots of sunshine and heat in a beautiful city and among very relaxed people...!!! The city itself is small and compact and there is not too much pressure of cramming all the sights of the city here so we could take it easy at our own pace and fitted in some of the lovely european shopping too...!!! We ... read more

Thursday 22nd September Day three in Granada has been at a much slower pace than my first hectic two days here. Having been unsuccessful in my attempt to find a laundry to get my clothes washed I made the choice to go and buy a few things to get me through until I leave Spain on Sunday. It was a late start to my morning (woked up at 8.30am) compared to my previous ones in Spain, I think I am getting used to the different pace here and after grabbing a quick shower in the hotel I again wandered through the tiny laneways, away from the tourist area and the expensive breakfast bars back to the Cafe Bar Sanchoz near Plaza Trinidad where I downed two cafe con leches (coffee with milk) accompanied by some tostadas ... read more

Woke up early on Tuesday morning and headed off to have desayuno at Bar Europa (same place as i had dinner last night). Despite being told they opened at 8am the kitchen wasn´t and so I was greeted with "lo siento" when i asked for eggs. The waiter could tell from my expression that I was a little disapppointed and so they decided that they would open it for me, which was a very nice gesture. I rushed back to my hotel to check-out so that i could make the 11am bus to Granada. All things went well, I thanked the staff for a pleasant stay and grabbed a taxi to the bus station which is at El Prado de San Sebastien. Traffic as always in Seville was chaotic but I made it in time and ... read more
