My art class took a field trip to Córdoba on February 3. I had no idea what to expect, so I was pleasantly surprised with the city. It rained all morning while we traveled by bus, but thankfully the rain left when we arrived in Córdaba at 11:30 a.m. Our class visited La Mezquita, which is the famous mosque. In my art class we have been studying the history and the art techniques of this particular mosque. I need to study a little more to remember all the califas that contributed to the building process, but I finally have the art vocabulary down for La Mezquita! I have never been inside a mosque so it was very cool to understand the importance of the different parts. We tried getting into the Alcazar de los Reyes Cristianos ... read more

Well, we had a week-long break between the intensive month and the start of actual classes. This was two weeks ago... you know how it goes. And when I say that I was on vacation during our vacation time, I mean it in the most vacation-ey way possible. Our days in málaga were long but lazy...we laid around a lot, read, talked, ate, drank, slept... We took a bus (cheap), and it was only a couple of hours until we arrived. We stayed at Rincón de la Victoria, which is basically a little fishing town right outside of the actual city of Málaga. And it´s sort of confusing because Málaga is a province as well. Anyway, like i said, we had a pretty chill vacation. Our hotel was on the beach of the mediterranean, so we ... read more

So, another big difference I've noticed in Spain is the way people interact socially. In college in the US, it's very common to invite friends over. With me and my friends, we drink coffee/chai tea, sit around and talk, sometimes have a movie night. Just anything. We'll also randomly visit friends in their dorm rooms, etc. Definitely not here! You almost never have friends over to your house. The home is a very personal place and unless you're having a formal dinner, or something like that, you don't just have friends over. This is taken to the point, where, if a guy invites a girl up to his apartment, and she says yes, it's considered "consent." Wow! Luckily we learned this early on, so we knew to not invite friends over to the apartment, and to ... read more

I bought a cell phone in Spain! It completes me. I have my US phone here and it made me sad to look at it in its useless state. Anyway, my number is 034-692847122. Woo..that´s a lot of numbers. If you call me, it´s free for me or I can call you and it´s free for you! I slept for 12 hours last night. I was exhausted! I went to bed at 7 and then suddenly woke up. I saw light still in my window and heard the family in the living room. My clock said 10 and I had no idea if it meant am or pm (I can´t work the damn thing). Class started at 9am and I was afraid I was late. I ran out of my room and asked my ¨mom¨if it ... read more

Sunday, I visited La Inglesia de Prosperidad. I loved it. The Spanish congregation was so welcoming. I immediately felt at home worshipping with them. Generally, unless you know a Spaniard you don’t smile or make eye contact on the street. Yet, when walking down the street to the church some people smiled at me and I was confused. After seeing the friendly strangers go into the church I realized that Christian Spaniards are welcoming to strangers. What a concept. It was a great experience to break bread with believers in a foreign language. I loved getting to experience how they worship the same true God. It was very refreshing. I’m excited to go back next week! ... read more

VACATION! we´re on it. no school for the whole week. i feel very relaxed; it really seems to have occurred at the perfect time... I have such a hard time trying to decide what to write about! This is such an intense experience, and I have a lot of thoughts about it all. I´m trying to write the most informative yet interesting yet not overwhelming updates that I can. With my limited internet time. Work with me here. :) That said... Last week I went to a Catholic mass in a huge cathedral near the Albaicin. Lauren and I went with some girls from California and their señora. The church was freezing - everyone kept their coats on, and you could see your breath. It was super interesting to experience it, especially listening to the service ... read more

I´ve been up for over 24 hours now, and my god I need some sleep. It has certainly been a wild ride. I spent a 7 hour flight to London with three kids kicking the back of my seat, screaming, and pulling my hair. Good part- I forgot I had requested a "healthy" inflight meal and it was awesome! I also got watch The Brothers Grimm and that Heaven movie with Reese Witherspoon. My flight to London was late in and I seriously thought I was going to miss my flight. My flight was even labeled wrong on the board so I had to ask (as calmly as possible) WTF mate?! Made the flight...and the flight to Spain was so fun. The pilot was a goofball and I got a vegan breakfast of potatoes and scary ... read more

Seville is said to be one of the sexiest cities in the world. My friends and I laughed at that comment while aboard El Ave, Spain's bullet train. The journey was fast, can't believe it goes that quick! We stayed at an awesome hostel that I would definitely reccomend to anyone who's travelling in Seville. It was called the Hostal Nueva Suiza. Its right in the middle of the city. So I'm sure you thinking what's so different about Seville. Seville is in Andalusia, the most southern mainland region of Spain, also the last stronghold of the Moors, or the Muslims. The architecture is completely different there. Madrid ,minus the old city, is more of a modern place. Seville has a plethora of cobblestone streets, moorish plazas, beautiful mosks and churches, etc. Also the Alcazar was ... read more

So this weekend, I did my first overnight trip without NYU. I took the 6 hour bus(round trip=29 Euros) instead of the 2 hour speed train(round trip=120 Euros). It wasn't so bad. On the way there, they showed "Dr Jekyll and Mrs Hyde". It was an old american movie dubbed in Spanish, but i watched it through without headphones, which was better than hearing the Spanish. It was pretty funny. We had a lot of fun and took a lot of pictures, so you can hear about my adventures through them. The shopping there was great, but I only bought 2 pairs of shoes, a pair of sneakers for running and black heels for going out. Both were only 6 euro each. Yelena also bought 2 pairs of shoes but for 70 euro together. The ride ... read more
