Bid farewell to Zagreb and off to Slovenia. Only a short time to the border. Get to passport control and we have to get off the bus, walk in the office, get our passports stamped then out the next door (on the Slovenian side) and back on the bus. Hmmm..... Anyway, all done quite quickly in comparison to one of the Bosnian borders. A few minutes later we stop at a roadside diner. No Burger King this time. We are given half an hour. Way too much time again, and you had to pay €0.50 to have a wee. Finally into the centre of Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. Meet our guide who likes to crack jokes and ask us lots of questions - thought he was meant to be the expert. Bloody hot so everyone ... read more

I was too tired to collect my bus tickets on the previous evening and had to get up at four in the morning in order to get in time to the bus station (tickets should be collected 30 minutes before departure), the departure was at 5.30 and I had about half an hour to wait. Actually, the bus appeared some 40 minutes late. The name of the company was Croatia Bus. The drive to Slovenian border took about 25 minutes and we quickly passed it and in about two hours arrived in Ljubljana. I went on Miklosiceva Street in the direction of the city’s heart, and saw an office of my own Russian Sberbank – actually the only bank I’m using for my payments, cards and other money matters. I managed to withdraw cash from my ... read more

Whew! It was hot in Ljubjana when I got here on Friday and stayed that way until a cooling Sunday evening rain. Naturally, my room isn't air conditioned and the one feeble window manages to open only in the direction that does not allow a breeze to enter. But, not to be done in, I ventured out Saturday for a short trek around town and through Tivoli Park. Sunday, I took myself along the river walk - both sides. Every eatery and bar was manned by excited British soccer fans. Just as you can usually spot an American in Europe, you can't miss a Brit revving up for his favorite team. That evening I finally met with my fellow travelers in Best of the Adriatic in 14 Days. All Americans save one Aussie and all seasoned ... read more

Saturday 16 May: Don’t forget to check at the bottom for additional photos. In yesterday’s post I mentioned the old buses that ply the roads of Ljubljana. Well, it appears they aren’t the only relics of the past to make it to the city. In the next 6 weeks there are concerts by Ice-T, the Pet Shop Boys, Toto, and Bob Dylan! Anyway, the weather today was much better and after breakfast we headed into the city. We got off near the old town where a busy market was in full swing. After a look around we caught the funicular up to Ljubljana Castle. This was very enjoyable. They had entertainment on in the courtyard and we visited the museum and climbed the impressive spiral staircase to the top of the tower to see great views ... read more

Friday 15 May: If you were growing up in Auckland in the 70s and 80s you might have travelled to school on one of those old ARA buses with the wooden seats. If you ever wondered what happened to those buses I can inform you they are happily transporting the citizens of Ljubljana, Slovenia! It has been a bit of an unusual day. Zachary woke up at 5. Mr Rado from the Bled hostel gave us a lift in his Saab to Ljubljana. He had gone to the trouble of getting a proper car seat for Zachary which Zachary was quite chuffed about and we zoomed down the highway (the speed limit is 130 here). As it was raining he insisted on taking us right to our new accommodation. What an extremely nice man he is ... read more

26 April 2015 Sunday My sobe was just a hundred feet from Preseren Square, so was very convenient for touring the town. Before meeting Mike at the statue of the Slovenian poet Preseren in the square named after him, I checked out the nearby tourist information office to see when there might be a guided walking tour of Ljubljana. The tour started at ten am which gave us plenty of time for café au lait and a croissant. We joined about eight others for the two hour tour, starting with city hall, a historic eatery, the cathedral, and a funicular to the castle. The views from the castle, as usual, were panoramic. We descended the funicular and walked back to the center of town, past the Market Hall and Triple Bridges designed by Jose Plecnic, and ... read more

I can't believe it's already been 4 weeks since I left America! They've flown by so fast, and now there's only 7 more weeks to go. I've now made it behind the Iron Curtain, and I'll be staying here for most of the remainder of my trip - until May 12th. This is all a new part of Europe for me to explore (my day trips to Bratislava and Poland don't really count much in the grand scheme of things), and I can say that I was taken over by a little rush of excitement when we crossed into Slovenia yesterday morning and I started seeing signs in a language I hadn't ever encountered. The train to Ljubljana wasn't exactly how I had planned - it was more of a bus. Apparently they've been doing some ... read more

Easter Monday found us up for breakfast at 8 am and then packing up our bags. Our next task was to set off to find the bus stop for bus #15, the one that supposedly would deliver us to our mystery destination out in an industrial park where we were to catch our Florentia bus to Ljubljana. When i first booked our bus tickets I immediately checked out the location on Google Earth and was quite dismayed with where the bus stop was located. We decided to roll the dice and wait until we got to Padua where we would then ask. Suzy, our hostess, had never heard of this place but did some research and told us to take bus #15. After further searching I mapped out the route from the pickup point and decided ... read more

Our train passes westward through southern Croatia. A country that hangs like a gibbet over Bosnia/ Herzegovina which lays just a few klicks to the south. In the Croatian village of Slovanski Brod we see some upper-story windows haloed with deep pockmarks punched out by the automatic weapons fire that Serbs had trained on defensive snipers who were positioned in the attics of homes on the southern edge of town. On July 15th of 1992 Bosnian refugees who had taken shelter in Slovanski Brod's soccer stadium were subjected to artillery barrages by Serbian forces in Bosnia. Dozens of civilians were killed and maimed. Business as usual. Serbia has a bad vibe to it. Men dressed in faded-Adidas track suits and cheap leather jackets wander aimlessly through the train to Belgrade. Many take long pulls from cans ... read more

I depart from Split (via Dubrovnik) and take the night train to Ljubljana. I tried as much as I could to get sleep where I would be fresh to start my next journey. I arrive shortly after nine am the following morning, and I am desperately in need of a shower. I depart the train station and start out on foot to find my hostel. The directions were not that easy to navigate from, and I found myself asking more than one local to direct me. I just could not find the right street, and my backpack felt like it was getting heavier and heavier. Finally, after what seemed like hours, but in reality probably maybe one, I reach my hostel. It took a few minutes to learn how to navigate and get inside, but finally ... read more
