July 17th: Early to rise, no sign of the guy who runs the B&B so I had to leave the cash in the room… I sure as hell hope that he gets it, I’d hate to have to pay for my most expensive room twice just because a cleaner or someone was a little light fingered (NB: I emailed the guy the next day and he said he HAD got the money and apologised for not being around to collect it himself). Well that’s nice of the Venezia Mestre train station… to still have an hourly train to Villach over the boarder in Austria listed on their train timetable (the time table is valid till December 2012 apparently) even though they don’t have a train at all, they have a bus which seems to go maybe ... read more

Day 32: otherwise known as the day we went from the Adriatic to the Alps, or better yet, the day we went from 100 degrees to 80!!! Today I realized I have not watched a TV show since I left the USA (not counting a couple of World Cup soccer games), and I haven’t had a diet coke in 10 days!!! These are good things. Our ferry ride was our last of the trip. I really do like this Croatian ferry line Jardolina, clean, always on time, reasonably priced, decently restaurant, comfortable beds. AC is questionable though… we didn’t have much in our cabin and it was hot and stuffy. We got up at 5:45 am and went to breakfast at 6. We had a full breakfast of ham, cheese, scrambled eggs, bread, cereal and two ... read more

Adieu lampe frontale. Tu m'as rendu de fiers services.

If you have a desire to get out and see the world, the lovely reader, surely now's the time then to fill your boots! Life offers us so many rewarding experiences in this wonderful world we share, as I send fond season’s greetings from lovely Ljubljana. The Balkans is a fascinating part of Europe, and I'm looking forward to exploring this unique region during the next month. So once again it's time to get with the program here in Slovenia, as I embark on a new series of travel adventures. The most competitive long haul airfare out of Australia at Christmas time is with China Southern airlines. So I purchased a ticket cause the price is right, and the flight had it's transit in Guangzhou. It was interesting to compare China Southern with the more established ... read more

What an awesome night Train. I Had the whole room to myself, cant beat that. So AWESOME. ha. Arrived here about 8 am, As I come up to my hostel there is graffiti everywhere on the surrounding walls. I was like where the heel am I. I thought I might be in the ghetto. The Hostel Im staying out use to be an old prison but converted into a Hostel. The Hostel is pretty cool and the surrounding area is actually the safest in the city and its just a bunch of hippies that live in this area. I checked my bags in and started to walk around the city for about 5 hours. I went up to the Castle and took some good scenic shots and all through old town. Some cool history here. Had ... read more

After my few days hiking and rafting in Gorenjska, Northwest of Slovenia, and I eventually made my way to Ljubljana, only 90 mins away by local train or bus, and I arrived this little but famous historical city in Central Europe. The bus ride pretty cheap, 5 Euro getting to the capital and the journey was pretty good and worth doing during the day, where I had more than enough time to explore the gorgeous green country side of the capital upon arriving into the city, and I can promptly tell myself that the city is quite small but pretty looking from outside. As mentioned above, the city is quite small, it's about the same size as Tallinn with around 300,000 residents, or it might be smaller than any cities in England, and once you are ... read more

The drive out of Croatia was long. Croatia, while not that big, is longer than you think – almost 800ks as the crow flies along the coast. We got away from the excellent campsite by ten, farewelling our German friends and the super friendly old couple that owned the place. Heading north we avoided the motorway and associated tolls, and this took us through some fantastic country. Similar to parts of Spain, the low sandstone hills had a very Mediterranean look to them, dry, spotted with small villages. Different to Spain, however, was the occasional bombed out house. Not as much damage here as in Bosnia and Hercegovina, but you could still see where fighting had happened. The road followed the coast for much of the way, then we cut inland, slowly increasing in altitude. We ... read more

Slovenia, the dead centre of Europe, population 2 million, and basically a hole ha ha :-). We were in the capital, Ljubljana. When we started wandering the streets it began to seem like this place could be the quiet achiever. We went first, to a place called the skeleton bar. It’s a cool place, you walk down into the basement and there are bones and skulls and shit everywhere and the largest and cheapest cocktail menu I have ever seen. It’s the kind of place that if you found yourself would be an absolute gem, but when you pack 40 Aussies into it looses a lot of its lustre. I was drinking a ‘sex in a disabled toilet’ which was just cool, and actually a really nice cocktail :-). So Tom played the starter on ... read more
