http://www.heygo.com 12th February - The architecture of Jože Plečnik This renowned pioneer of 20th century modern architecture has had a large-scale effect on Ljubljana, similar to that of Antoni Gaudí in Barcelona. In Vienna, where he studied, Plečnik designed a number of pioneering works of modern architecture. Upon returning to Ljubljana in 1921, Plečnik accepted the post of professor at the newly established University of Ljubljana and focused all his creative energies to designing the city. Bonjour à tous, Je vais reprendre, là où je vous ai lâchement abandonné hier au soir. Mais avant, un mot sur le souper au restaurant, le Gujzina, cuisine traditionnelle slovène, que m'avait conseillé, la réceptionniste, (encore un beau brin de fille). Une fois de plus je ne sais pas trop ce que j'ai mangé, genre soupe à l'oignon, avec ce que je n'ai pu définir, soit de la semoule, soit des micros-pâtes, et probablement de la crème, sauce??, malheureusement sans fromage gratiné, accompagné mais séparément, de lentilles - pommes de terre, un ramequin de champignons en sauce un curieux mélange tout ça. Bof!!!, et pour finir une boule de glace, avec un parfum qui m'était complètement inconnu, et qui va le rester. Day 35 : Thursday 10 October 2019 : Lake Bled to Ljubljana The transfer bus picked us up near our accommodation. We’re off to Ljubljana. It was a full mini bus, but was well worth the price. 40 minutes. We arrive and it was really raining, it’s the first time we’ve seriously been caught in the rain. Luggage and all, plus we can’t find the accommodation!! We ended up taking shelter and Graham went looking for the Airbnb. It feels like our accommodation is in the middle of nowhere. Found the place, we dump our bags with the cleaner, get some dry clothes and head back out until the Airbnb’s ready. We used Saturday morning to plan the final weeks of our trip. We've decided to base ourselves in Split for ten days and take day trips or perhaps an overnight to an island. We will take a bus to Dubrovnik on the 8th and fly to Venice, where we overnight and fly to Boston very early the next morning. When we got tired of looking at airbnb possibilities in Split, we headed out to get bikes again, and ride to the Botanical garden. "Established in 1810, the Ljubljana Botanical Garden is Slovenia's oldest cultural, scientific and educational institution operating uninterruptedly since its foundation. The Garden contains more than 4,500 different species and subspecies. One third of them are endemic to Slovenia, while the rest originate from other parts of Europe and other continents." The blog title comes from a statement on museums from one of the many we visited on Wednesday. I love the idea! On Tuesday, we decided to use the city bike program to get around. We found the nearest location (only a block away) and successfully entered our codes, took our bikes and headed off into the heart of Ljubljana on two wheels! We dodged other cyclists, pedestrians, the occasional dog, and construction work, arriving safely at the triple bridges, where we returned our bikes, and headed to the funicular that would take us up to the castle. The Chinese have discovered Ljubljana, and there was a large tour group waiting for the funicular, so it took awhile. Slovenia and Croatia have been targeting China recently with travel promotions, and it is apparently working really well! ... read more
